Why does this game not run properly anymore?

Hello all, Wolfshrimp in need of tech support.

I occupy the awkward middle ground of knowing just enough about computers to SOUND like I know what I'm talking about but not enough to actually KNOW what I'm doing. It's a recurring theme in my life.

This particular problem is concerning the classic Hitman Blood Money. I used to have this game in the autumn/winter of 2007. Played it to exhaustion, loved it. Then, in order to scrounge together some cash, I sold it. Haven't looked back until now, where owing to an ongoing fight with a storage company, I haven't got my precious 360 and its catalogue of games back. So I went to the local second-hand game shop and purchased a lovely version of Hitman Blood Money for a couple of pounds.

There was one thing up with the installation where it said it couldn't read a particular movie .bik due to a possible corrupt disk but it still installed and functioned reasonably well.

The trouble I'm having is that the framerate is ghastly. If I want to let of some steam and pull out something that fires automatic, the game gets more choppy than a butcher with a large consignment of lamb. Even rotating the view around Mr. 47 or running leads to stuttering screen. I'm running the game on minimum settings (which I didn't do before) and the lack of clarity really adds to the ruination of a good game.

I don't understand how my laptop can quite happily run CoD 4 on medium setting and could easily handle Crysis and didn't do too bad a job of handling a low-set FarCry 2 and then crumple on something I know it ran smoothly and decently in the past. I've even upgraded the RAM and installed the only update for my graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon X1400- made for Toshiba by ATI supported by neither after 2008) since I got rid of my first copy of Blood Money. All the settings on my graphics card are optimised for the best performance and still I can't get the game to function correctly. What could be causing this frustration? Can anyone suggest anything to help?

Pre-emptive thanks to all you chaps and chapesses who know how to sort such things.

Might be that your hardware is too new for the game. Some games just don't age well from that point of view.

You could also try to find the missing .bik file from the internet to see if that helps.

Even though it's not as old as some games (I can run HL2E2 at over 200fps, and Star Wars Battlefront [2004] runs just dandy), That particular game's engine may not support the newer, higher spec architecture of today. It's not as much a game engine being forwards compatible as much as it is a newer processor (or more likely, Graphics card) being an entirely newer build as opposed to being a highly updated old one.
If the game does not run and you've exhausted all the support you can find or conjure, than it may well be that the game engine just doesn't like your card and you're bang outta luck apart from doing some kind of complicated dual-card thing with older hardware just for that game. You possibly might be better off playing it on a console.
