Alright, so on another site debating the Fire Emblem controversy right now someone made an aside about one of the characters, Camilla and how the design focused "completely on her breasts and how you'd never see something like that focused on a penis" so blahblah sexism etc.

For reference this is the character they were talking about:

Two things occurred to me; one, yes it does happen -

Hi, super-bulge!

And two...this seems like a weird comparison to make. But its made all the time - on Youtube, on gaming forums, about comics and other forms of media, and even here on the Escapist.

But it seems like a weird stretch. For one - breasts aren't a primary sexual characteristic a penis is - the vagina is its analogue. Second, it seems to ignore several things, like how men in fiction are still being depicted in a sexual ideal for women although often taken a little far for women's taste (as noted here before, men seem much more willing to accept exaggerated things for anatomy than women are) and probably more importantly, how the nether regions of humans are treated in their depictions.

The rule seems to hold the same for both men and women - you can HINT the penis/vagina, have all the ass shots you want, and show udnerwear etc.; but actually depicting them with any definition (IE: Camel toe) is reserved for actual/borderline porn. They're explicitly sexual organs and they're treated as such.

Women's breasts however fall into this gray area where they're not explicitly sexual themselves, but they're very sexual for men (because that is how our brains work). And they're still considered naughty because of that in many areas, so they become that much more tantalizing in media (and life) because of it.

The equivalent would seem to be more shirtless men with nice pecs...but there are already A LOT of those around, and they don't seem to do it for women the same way breasts do it for men.

I almost feel as if the complaint is rooted less in the display and more in the discrepancy of enjoyment than anything else.

Why is everyone here so obsessed with dick? We've been getting some strange threads lately.

Perhaps I'm off the mark seeing as how I'm a heterosexual male, but I have a theory; penises are gross.

Seriously, have you taken the time to examine one? I mean REALLY examine it?[footnote]Don't answer that.[/footnote] They look like some sort of eldritch, eyeless worm bent on devouring souls.

The breast falls under the category of 'secondary sexual characteristics,' so they're more comparable to male physique then anything else, not the penis.

Whether that be an athletic or muscular build, or something else, is up to the viewer, much like breast size/exposure sexiness is up to them as well/

Yup. Whenever people compare boobs to penises it's a false dichotomy. Doesn't matter who does it, feminists complaining about fictional characters or the idiot anti-feminists that obsessively sexualise breasts.

A female character with her cleavage showing should be seen the same way as a dude with a plunging v-neck that shows his chest hair (though personally I'd take cleavage over hairy man chests any day). These discussions about double standards with video game characters always frustrate me because there seems to be stupid reductionist arguments on both sides.

In theory, yes, but in our current society, not so much. A topless male is no big deal, a topless female is indecent. The whole thing is rather absurd, yeah.

Seriously there is no comparison with those two pictures. That unnecessary leather strap between her breasts looks pretty much like an erect penis itself, it even has a head for fucks sake!

Don't get me wrong i have no problem them implying a titty-fuck with that picture but really, the Superman one isn't nearly as blatant.

This might be more what you are looking for *Probably NSFW* http://i.imgur.com/j14rmXH.png

Probably because there's quite a large amount of women showing their tits off, whereas this is the first time I've ever seen that bulge on superman. It's not exactly a popular way to portray him.

Plus a bulge isn't quite as sexualized as an outfit designed to leave very little to the imagination. You can actually walk around in a Superman outfit and not get called indecent. Can't say the same for the Fire Emblem outfit.

Because boobs are closer to eye level than penises mainly. They're easier to frame.

Plus other stuff said, like boobs not being reproductive in nature, being more pleasant to look at, boobs being more symbolic than anything, etc.

There's also the fact that penis size is usually subject of humour, so while sexual things like cleavage can still be taken seriously a guy with a large bulge will ruin any dramatic scene.

But in the end, like I had in my topic about 2 weeks ago (lost track of time), men get sexualised a lot too but nobody ever complains about that.
Cleavage can be taken seriously? Well I imagine some people can but people like me who wish they weren't crammed in so forcefully often complain about how we CAN'T take them seriously. I mean look at that outfit! Any scene where she's going to try and be dramatic I'm going to have to distract myself from her comical boobs and the leather strap in them that looks like a dong. It's going to take some grade A writing.

As for men being sexualized a lot, not really. When we get more guys walking around in outfits that bare their midriffs or show off their man tits a la JoJo's Bizarre Adventure let me know. No seriously let me know, I will be excited as all hell. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is like Bayonetta, sexualization done, SO SO RIGHT!

You realize the strap is in fact the thing holding up her cloak, right? As in its a buckle, right? That attaches at the shoulder?

Superman bought Lois Lane a leotard for her birthday? Say what you mean Superman: 'Lois, I want you to go to the gym more. In the eighties'

OT: The Superman one doesn't really strike me as particularly bulgy. The woman (not sure who that is) does have gigantic tits though.
That particular scene is from All star Superman where Supes gives Lois that outfit which will bestow unto her his powers for 24 hours. Considering that, it probably will put her into some stellar shape.

Is that really the best example of penis emphasis in comics? Because that's kind of weak

I'd try to find a better one but don't feel like typing "comic book penis" into Google image search...

That is an awesome gift to give her! I'm actually touched...very cool idea.

Boobs look like giant googly eyes, and once you look at a woman's naked body like that you can't unsee it until you walk away and giggle for a while. Fact.
