Why Don't we have MegaThreads?

So I checked just for curiosity a Forum with the name "Facepunch".
Really goood and nice looking Forum, plus it have a very unique feature like in Neogaf as well: I have MegaThreads.

Why we don't have simlar Threads like this in Escapist. The Only MegaThread I think is qualified as that is the "Old Games you remember playing but can't remember the name of" Thread.

Don't we need Threads for franchises like Doom, Civilization, Halo, Overwatch, etc., etc.?
Or even like the one we have already here. Just something we can talk about in one thread only.

Might have to do with user attention spans not willing to engage in all the reading if they're new to the thread.

In case you hadn't noticed, the traffic on this forum has dropped to abysmally-low levels. I don't think this forum has enough traffic anymore to sustain a megathread.

Besides, this forum has a rather checkered history with megathreads. I don't think I need to remind everyone of a certain megathread that dominated this forum about 2 years ago...

Let's just say that the thread was ultimately closed because it had become, and I quote, "impossible to moderate".


Anyways, in more technical terms, probably the reason why those other sites have megathreads and we don't, is because we have usergroups and they don't.

Want a place on this site where you can talk endlessly about Overwatch without having to worry about derailing a thread or posting low-content? Well, just create an Overwatch usergroup, and bingo, there's your Overwatch megathread.

GamerGate....of course. I didn't expect 1000+ pages I will admit.
Truth about the UserGroups, but their format as far I know isn't so friendly and it is only the chatroom as far a discussion goes.

Like IceForce said, the forums don't have the userbase anymore to sustain megathreads. Near as I can tell, it's just a few dozen regulars and a bunch of people that come and go anymore, or at least it seems that way. In fact, I'd be quite interested to see some numbers on the average traffic of the forums nowadays.

And then there's usergroups.

I think megathreads are messy, just look at why the previously posted "impossible to moderate" thread was locked

This thread has grown so large as to be impossible to moderate or keep on topic

It's just people talking across each other, having about 13 conversations on different topics that make it impossible to follow. For example 3 people are discussing the graphics of a game, 2 sound nerds are going at it and 8 people are talking about the plot ... then a new person clicks onto the thread that has 1000 pages and replies to somebody on the first page, but that has been dealt with 'cos the guy who posted the message has been quoted 100 times.

Maybe it's just me but I like one person starts a thread talking about a certain thing (or be broad) then talk about that. Like there is one guy talking about how gears 4 having micro transactions or there could be a thread just allowing people to talk about their feelings or opinions on gears 4. As opposed to lets have have a thread about gears franchise, that gets necro'd every couple of years when a new game is announced.

To be fair that's been the Escapist for as long as I've been here.

I can only speak for myself, but if I dont absolutely love the topic at hand, or people arent responding to my posts, I stop caring by page 3.

Edit: And Megathreads suck anyways, for reasons people have already stated.
