This is something that has been rattling around in my brain since the Alice in Wonderland remake came out and is now made more obvious by the Red Riding Hood and Beastly (while I don't have any real proof, it just screams Beauty and the Beast rip off). Why does Hollywood feel the need to make children's stories edgy? Also if you can think of any other movies I might have missed go ahead and add them in.

You have a set, familiar storyline that people have fallen in love with already. It gives the audience a re-imagining of certain movies/books that we all loved when we were so young. They pay less for writers as they simply need to adapt a script, and it gets them a ton of publicity, good or bad.

Remember transformers? If it sucked so bad why did so many people still go see transformers 2? Even if a very popular movie sucks, you'll see the next one because you figure "It must be better than the first" or "I'll give him another chance."

The Little Red Riding Hood and The Beauty and the Beast are pretty "edgy" to begin with, the Little Red Riding Hood being one the darker children's stories in Western tradition. It's probably below Hanzel and Gretel, but it's still pretty up there. Ditto for Alice and Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, or Harry Potter.

I think the better question is "Why do dark and challenging children's stories get made into films more often?" and I think the answer is that they're more memorable and have the most cross-over appeal. Everyone who reads The Bridge to Terebithia as a kid remembers the unexpected downer ending.

I can't believe they remade Nanny Mcphee. It's the exact same fucking movie only dummed down for modern audiences.
