Why is it that everyone thinks that the vocal minority of Xbox live users and CoD players are...

Are preteen males?
I have played on Xbox Live, (although I share a gamertag with my younger brother) and to my experience, most users are adult males who sound like they're in their 20s or 30s.

And the absolute worst experiences I've had on Xbox Live were with males (AND ALWAYS MALES for some reason) who sounded like they're in their 20s or 30s.

That assumption isn't too far off, as those same guys acted like ill-behaved children, but they're now adults and much less bearable than a delinquent child. Screaming, swearing, insulting, always out to prove their "skill" and "toughness" and "sexual competence"...

Yeah, these guys will always be worse than an angry kid with a microphone, but why do people think they're that minority?

Your post is invalid because nothing is worse than an angry kid with a microphone.

The 20 year olds swear, scream, insult, etc? Psh, the little kids do the same thing but with their high pitched little voices. The high pitched little voices always make it worse.

I'm always weirded out by these threads. Why? Because it implies that you don't have everyone muted. Who the hell plays COD with the voice chat on?

It's just generalising dude. Also I reckon they're the vast majority rather than a small and vocal one, but nevertheless Xbox Live isn't completely filled with people like that, or little 12 year old kids.

Some are shitheads obsessed with being douches and going on about L337 sK1llz and whatnot and others just wanna play.
Doesn't matter to me, so long as there's a mute button.

The sort of person that talks shit on the mic. I love playing games with voice chat on because the stuff people talk about amuses me greatly.

Because those little shits are the ones that stick out most vividly in our memories, so we automatically generalize based on the memory of them.

Because we can tell by the sound of their voices?

A preteen male sounds significantly difference to a 20-40 year old.

Because gamers love stereotypes. Heck everyone loves stereotypes. Hey guys, what's your favorite stereotype?

Ok, fine. But does anybody have it on apart from those two reasons? I for one have never played, nor seen someone play a game of COD with the voice chat on.

What this pony here said. Doesn't matter what it is, when somepony speaks, it will always be much, much worse in high-pitch.

Think of it like... Hitler being a 12 year old kid with a high-pitched voice. There imagine that. I just made the holocaust much worse for everypony.

You can't take neither of them seriously, but at least the little kid's insults are far less likely to be as well-aimed, virile, or even intelligible as opposed to a 20-something, most of the time, you can laugh at the poor kid, threaten to call his mommy, or some other taunt about his young age and that he shouldn't be yelling at adults, or that he doesn't even know what more than half of the crap he just spewed out of his mouth even means!

You can't take these kids seriously.

Their actual age doesn't matter. If they have the maturity of a pre-teen male then they are a pre-teen male as far as I'm concerned.

As long as the person knows how to play the game, I don't care what gender/country/age/haircolor is.

Most older people I play with are nicer, calmer and don't hurt my ears. Though some people play really bad music really loudly.
I have to admit though I hate it when I lose a game or something and some 30 year old basement dweller is going on about how much I suck.

Because the older annoying gamers are usually funny or at least have good comebacks. Little annoying kids just scream and yell at lot.

And 12 year olds are just unbearable to listen to.

THIS THIS THIS.

Mute all by default. Hell, if I'm not playing in a party, I have my voice volume turned all the way down at the Dashboard level.

The below bit is just me explaining why I don't automute, however i'm rather sure I went off on a tangent, so spoilered.

It actually depends, I usually automute at the start of a match if its just background noise (OHGODSOMUCHBACKGROUNDNOISE) but if its a person trying to talk shit it's usually hilarious. Especially considering i'm English and no offense to you American folks, but the COD demographic over on your shores are terrible at trash talk.

It usually boils down to "We saved your ass in the war" or "If you English are so cool, why're you speaking American?". Yeah, that last conversation actually happened, I was actually quite stunned for a second too. Anyway, I wouldn't want to miss that, it's half the fun of playing. I've learned so many different insults from different countries by playing.

OP:

Dude, what sticks with you the most? An adult man child's voice or the voice of someone who clearly shouldn't have the game, talks so high pitched it could crack glass and brags about managing a petty 2:1 k/d ratio in a game like it was the most amazing thing ever?

Ugh, I still get nightmares

simple solution, add a mute all button that also mutes people who join after the fact, then of course be able to choose who you want to unmute.
