I really don't understand it. Cars you can drive in, houses you can live in, hell, with toys you can play with! But why is jewelry considered valuable? There just shiny? Would you pay like 1,000 bucks just to look shiny? Why would anyone want jewelry?

Because people pay a lot of money for jewelry... Paying so much makes it worth more.

Because they are made of, in comparison to cars, rare materials.

As just a sheer fact of pricing, its worth so much just due to the precious gems stones and metals.

As for why people pay that for it, its just another idea of status. Its a bit dated in my opinion, but I'm also kinda cheap anyways...

My thought process on this is that gems were hard to extract from the earth in old times, however people liked the way they looked and decided that they wanted them. Since the supply was so low the price went up and it became a status symbol since only the very rich could afford them. Even though the extraction is easier today it still is seen as a status symbol. I could be horribly wrong but this makes good sense in my mind.

Seriously I dont find any value in any jewelry besides a wedding band/ring, but thats just sentimental value. Most jems have very few uses other than looking pretty. Diamond is the exception; that stuff is extremely useful for engineers and nanotechnologists.

Realy OP?

This answer, which is painfully obvious, and this topic really reuires no discussion whatsoever.

Because most of the jewelry items created are made using at times rare and expensive materials and when kept in good shape can over time because valuable to others.

Are Diamonds really precious gems is the real question. The Earth produces a lot of pressure and has a lot of carbon on it so I wonder how many diamonds really exist.

Because they are made of (relatively) rare materials. And they are shiny, which is always good.

I believe Warren Buffet said: "Gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head."

Can't really argue with the man himself, you know?

Crystals have always been revered as precious things, for rarity and beliefs. Including perfectly formed crystals that are the precious jewels. diamonds rubies aquamarine and so forth~
jewelry as such took a LOT of skill to make back in the day. (even though the standards actually have DROPPED in the past 2000 years or so xD)
And gold, has been deemed currency for the same reason. Plus the fact it's sooo stable. It wont degrade or have reactions like brass would.

He was talking about gems, not metals. Almost all metal is useful.

To answer this, jewelry itself is worthless, but it's the materials that are expensive, and make the piece expensive!
A shiny piece of iron forged in the shape of whatever you want would be cheap, if it was gold (a PRECIOUS metal), however, it would be expensive. Also if it has precious stones (hence EXPENSIVE)

If the answer is painfully obvious, then how come you haven't said it?

Seriously, if you weren't going to contribute anything to the thread, why did you post in it?

Because gems, gold and silver are valuable resources... and because they're shiny.
