I feel like this is more of a fad than a fact. Back when I first heard these guys in high school, I didn't get the feeling that they were awful. I didn't really like them but I also didn't think they were all that bad. Suddenly sometime in late 2011 I started hearing all this stuff about how Nickelback is one of the worst bands ever, to the point where it's become a trend. Did they do something that caused everyone to just hate them?

So why does Nickelback suck? And I'd appreciate it if someone could come up with a reason other than 'Because they do'

Completely generic rock with cringeworthy lyrics, and somehow became massively popular from it.

Basically every single song sounds very similar. You got the two base songs of fast and slow/sad and if you play any from that category over the top of one another it sounds pretty similar.

I think their two songs are good, but this shouldnt be possible to do with any bands songs... not to mention the 100% generic "Lets party and have a lot of sex while dabbling in drugs because we are ultra baddassitude" lyrics which serve only to irk me.

Well I think it largely because they are popular and not all that great. I don?t mean everyone who hates them only hates them because it is the cool thing to do (tho some do), it?s just that since they are popular they played all the time and people don?t shut up them so stuff that would otherwise would just be ?not that bad? becomes ?worst ever?.
I like some of their stuff but the majority of their songs I?m...I don?t know, neutral I gues? I don?t particularly like them but I can stand them. Allot of their songs have horrible lyrics and sound to similar too me.

They are talented musicians, and the lead singer can sing well.

their song is very catchy as well, but that is where the problem lies... they only have one sound, and all their songs are really similar, as in they use exactly the same formula. (see the youtube vid biscuittrouser already posted) If you listen to their songs one after the other they blend into this mulchy hum of sameness.

The lead singer makes me think of a current day Axl Rose. He has a short temper and seems like a guy I wouldn't want to spend more than 5 minutes with.

Their actual music? Well, I stopped listening to them after "Animals." Really hated that song. I really don't despise Nickelback, I just don't like them, so I don't listen to them. Easy enough.

The lead singer got given the award of "most ugly guy in rock" a few years back, plus their music is awful, the lyrics seem like a 6 year old wrote them on the back of a maths book for joke, and the beats they use all sound the same. Overall, they are terrible musicians! Personally, if i ever seen them, I`d feel the urge to throw stuff at them, and not light stuff, pretty heavy stuff like bricks, chunks of metal, hell I`ll even throw one member at another!

I always thought they sucked. I really don't know how to put it aside from their tonality just not rubbing me the right way, and their lyrics feeling rather uninspired.

I think the big thing culturally is that they are mediocre but somehow still getting airplay, meanwhile some of the best music never sees a second of air time due to our sellout publisher run system (Clear Channel: We'll tell you what you like). It's not shocking when you shove something displeasing in people's faces they'll ***** about it, but also in a way this MEME seems to be attempting to tell publishers and media guys that this isn't what music fans want, not that they'll be able to hear anyone with their heads so far up their own asses.

I dunno, I kind of like their song, it's not exactly high art, but if I'm determined to pad out a playlist I'll throw it into the mix to add another 2:40.

You, my friend, have just described almost every band and products in general for the last sixty years. minus the words rock, lyrics... and that's it. no offense.

They just seem like something to hate to me. People complain about everything sounding the same and having crappy lyrics but that to me describes about 50% of mainstream music, probably more. I actually quite enjoy their music and I'm not afriad to say so. Also, hate them or not, you can't deny that Chad Kroger does have a good voice.

They aren't terrible, they just sort of, exist. Playing the same boring, generic material over and over.
This is what I think is the best analysis. They have nothing really ..... awful and obviously cringworthy about them. Basically, the only description you can give about them is akin to describing vanilla. As background music, they are okay. As inquisitive art to change paradigms or even follow one, look elsewhere.

I thought their first couple albums had some decent tunes on them. Not great, but decent. The Dimebag tribute song they did was really cool. But the last 2 or 3 albums have been the most generic, effortless modern rock possible. And the fact that they've become mega-stars like that is what pisses a lot of people off. Used to do the same to me. But just about every famous musician or band sounds generic now, I'm getting used to it.

His voice always sounds like he's taking a dump, a really hard to push out dump that is taking a lot of strain. I don't like Creed for the same reason.

Not that I have ever gone out of my way to hate on them, I'm content to not buy their albums or go to their shows.
