So i'm not hating on kesha's music but what executive thought she was a talent worth signing. I was just watching television and one of her videos came on and it made me go WTF. She has no vocal talent and is not exceptionally attractive. Usually you would expect a music artist to have one of those qualities, so it leaves me to wonder why someone thought she was worth signing.
This may be an unnecessary rant but i hear her music all the time(at parties, on television, and at friends houses) and the frustration just built to a point where i felt like vocalizing my thoughts.

So anyone either refute my thoughts or maybe have some insight as to why she's popular?

Also any WTF music moments of your own?

Why are the Jonas Brothers popular? Why is Justin Bieber popular?

These are questions that the world may never know.

Because people have opinions. I wish people would stop with these threads.
At least you gave it another discussion point.

Yeah, when I downloaded BFMV's new song. I thought it would suck, and it turned out to be really driven and pretty awesome. Naturally, this got my hopes up for the new album, but when I actually listened to it, it was the same shit which was on their last album. I really wasn't impressed.

I don't like most popular music, as in those that are in the charts and such. But others do, and their opinions are no more or less valid than my own.

Because we need MORE blonde pop singers who sound the same! She looks like a trashed Pixie Lott...
And it's "Ke$ha" because all cool people replace letters with symbols. Don't worry, she'll be gone in a year.

I don't think Cheryl Cole has an inkling of talent. I think she has a pretty face, but that's not something you base your career on.

I don't think males are really the target audience for a lot of music in the top 40 music. It's why 90% of the escapist will hate on the top 40 because we're males

The other 10% are either women or males who like it (not exact figures). Mainly because teenagers and (in my history) girls are much easier to predict and satisfy with music

Record company executives are people, too, and presumably have families to feed. I won't begrudge them exploiting attention whores with no talent for the purpose of taking money from people with no taste, because given the opportunity, I'd probably do the same.

My personal WTF moment came yesterday, when I found a stack of my old B-52's CDs and still liked them. I honestly thought I'd outgrown them.

She's good looking and they have her singing easy simple songs that have mass appeal.

I agree, Ke$ha's misc has pretty much no redeeming factor in my opinion. I don't get why people like her, but they are free to do so.

They're popular because young girls love pretty boys, regardless of how little talent they actually have. Also the Jonas Brothers put the idea of sex in the heads of younger kids through their purity ring nonsense.

Unless you only listen to yourself, you are still listening to stuff other people like. I think this is a weird statement since at the very least a band wants people to hear what they create.

I understand bands like The Weakerthans reject big labels and crass promotion, but they still have a sizable fan base just from playing shows, making awesome CDs. They are not in charts, but I think popularity can be pretty relative beyond that.

She's attractive enough and has an average enough voice to be marketed. It's incredible what impressionable people will follow if the marketing is good enough. Especially considering if you take a skinny woman with large enough breasts and dress her in skimpy clothing, you're going to get a fan following.

Sure, she's not that attractive, but the media says she is and she wears enough clothing to make half a handkerchief. Set her out to the world and let masculinity take you the rest of the way. Who's going to argue? You'll just be called gay and bullied.

At least that's what happens when I deny the attractiveness of Megan Fox, and claim she has less talent than a brick.

As for the women, she's popular, she has mediocre, dancey music and she fits the stereotype that the people who like her feel they need to follow. So they have to like her to be popular. Or something.

There you go, The Hare just did his first cultural mini rant of the day.
