I have been wondering, why is it that they call it the Escapist, where did they get the name and why did they choose it? Anyone know?

I am just wondering if their is some sort of clever reason behind it besdies "To escape reality."

As has been said, it's a site dedicated to forms of escapism.

Edit: Also it's kind of ambiguous, it doesn't shout, "GAIMES!" and it sounds like a newspaper eg. The Herald, The Guardian etc.

Actually, contrary to what most people think, the Escapist magazine was first published in 1867, and was the first magazine specifically for incarcerated criminals. The name was an (obvious enough) joke - and as its popularity grew, it found a secondary audience in ex-criminals who missed its unique sense of gallows humour combined with videos - at the time, a difficult technology to embed into a magazine, due to the material. As videogames turn people into thieves and murderers, eventually the 'gamer' demographic merged with the 'death row' demographic, spawning the encompassing digital monolith we know and love today. And that's the story.

We should get Kuliani or Russ Pitts on this thread somehow. They'd know why. However, my guess is that video games are escapism. This is video game website. For Escapists. Therefore, The Escapist!

Yeah I think I've gotta post more one liners on all threads, get those numbers up. There's someone I saw the other day, joined a month ago or something and he's cracking 5k. WTF?
It's from the Forum Games and usergroups. They skyrocket your post count like you can't believe.

... This year is 2010.

On topic, the escapism thing works and it sounds cool. What more do you need?

well honestly, I assumed it was as most people said, but I assumed their was some clever reasoning for the name then just the simple reason of "to escape reality."

Probably because it 'escapes' the external world. It being this Website. This Website generally being Games.

Like Nirvana in Buddhist Terms! Cookie for who knows what it means.
