Why is there a stigma attached to fantasy gaming?

Why do some people don't have a high opinion on fantasy gaming? Is this rural guy implying that fantasy gaming is bad?

How would rural and suburban average people react if a good looking athletic person who plays DnD moved in next door?

What would think they about a young good looking athletic person who wants to join the military who likes space marines and Captain America movies?

Why do some people think being attractive and athletic excludes one from liking fantasy?

I think they are insecure!

i think you're mistaking fantasy, as in the genre/setting; with fantasy, as in acting out something e.g playing fps games, considering the tweet was related to a shooting

As a layman, I'd say it's because to the casual eye, it's all the bloody same, just like anime. That's why.

When talking about fantasy, he was referring to D&D. This opinion is the 80's conservative stance of videogames, D&D and TV being evil. Are we going to assume his outdated views represent the average people?

The guy who tweeted that is pretty clearly an idiot.
Person 1: Bunch of kids got shot, maybe we should start have stricter restrictions on guns?
Tweeter: WELL MAYBE WE SHOULD MAKE VIDEOGAMES, LARPING AND TV ILLEGAL, THEY'RE WHAT REALLY MAKES PEOPLE EVIL!
Although, I'm assuming what he meant was we shouldn't be banning hobbies because of evil people?
I mean for fucks sake they guy describes himself as a "professional shower singer" and "avid photographer", let's not assume he's of any particular importance.

Also, was just reading through that guys tweets, and I hadn't realised that Chris Kyle had been murdered.

Okay so I'm confused, is fantasy the classic RPG swords/sorcery fantasy like Skyrim? Or fantasy as in House Party, a sexual romp of pretty dubiously moral sexual perversion?

I got the feeling he meant D&D stuff. Though it's likely anything including magic.

Dungeons and Dragons.

Damn, did I get warped back to 1984 here?

Oh no, LARPing is now the next great evil of the world, yaaaaaaay glad this scourge on society is finally getting addressed... *eyerolls at them*

Because me going "I am a Pooka Faerie who turns into a Seagull, I'm going to steal that Chimera's sword mid-flight with my beak-OH crap swords are heavy! I guess I'm falling into the lake with it!"* is tooooottally dangerous.

*(This is how I spent my saturday night. Was fun, would recommend)

EDIT: I have to say though, the fact that my highly conservative aunt heard about me going to a larp and she was like "oh, that sounds fun!" gives me hope that more and more people are going to stop treating it like some disease symptom.

If we're really serious about answering this question (are we?) there's a pretty big clue in the final sentence: You can't legislate evil. As soon as you believe in evil (and I don't understand how you can if you believe in God as this guy claims to) you begin to split the world in two, siding with the "good" and attacking the "bad". Of course it is just the ego which is seeking at assert itself as superior and righteous with every chance it gets, but this guy doesn't know that. So yes it's insecurity but the root cause is a dire misunderstanding of his own religion.

Then again, his tweet doesn't even make sense - you can't legislate against evil but he wants to legislate against it anyway? Some people can't be reasoned with.

I don't know, but I'm once again reminded of something a great man once said,
"A vehicle, whose primary function is transportation, has to be licensed, registered, insured and you have to have a license to drive it. However if anyone dares suggest having to license or register their guns, whose primary function is killing things, people lose their shit."
Now who was it who said that...? Oh right, it was me.

Now now, what we have told you about listening to, and getting worked up by lonely crazy people on social media before? Well, maybe nothing, I haven't paid much attention to be honest, so have to assume someone else has nobly (haplessly) done so instead.

The thing is that tweet is 6 years old, nobody agreed with it, nobody shared it and nobody even acknowledged it. How you even came across it and thought it worth worrying about is more of a concern here. There's no doubt plenty more tweets that are not only more positive to find, but more recent and indeed relevant for our current end of times. I mean times. That guy's probably wanking off to Sonic fan art now or something more degenerate deviant skirting the fringes of societal acceptance, a lot can happen to people in that time even if social media never forgets, unless you remember to utilise the delete function. *Cough* not topical *umm?*

I was totally hyped for this thread.

I was going to say "Because it's everywhere.

All the MMORPGs, The Witcher, The Lord of the Rings and all of it's spin offs. There are other genres out there. Cyberpunk has one game, but it barely gets anything out of Shadowrun. And don't even get me started on Steampunk. A good Steampunk game would have something for everyone."

But then it was full of real world stupidity.

That is a Sad. I have a Sad now.

Is...is this a new thread? I could have sworn we had this EXACT same thread like 6 months ago. Literally the same copy paste wording.

Why? I'd say a delectable combo of willful ignorance with a side order of good old fashioned blame shifting.

So is it a real controversy/stigma, or another fake one like the GTA is violent shit from the 90s that a PR firm hired by Rockstar orchestrated to get press coverage for their game?
Not really. It's just something that pokes it's head out once in awhile in the soccer mom and Christian conservative crowds.

What upsets me is that the MMORPGs has the cooler fantasy settings that I want a Singleplayer RPG to be made out of.

I want a Singleplayer RPG of Lord of the Rings that is more like LOTRO and less like Shadows of Mordor.

I'd be quite happy with another "The 3rd Age" or a better "War in the North" personally.
Or better yet, give me a game where you play as/for the White Council during the Rise of the Necromancer.

By the way... why the heck are you using a nobody's tweet from 2012 as example!?

That's like asking why shitty COD-clones dominate the game market. We are in 2018 FFS!
