For those of you who were unaware (which is probably, oh, five of you or so), Devil May Cry is getting a reboot/prequel game of sorts, and in an attempt to make Dante cooler (I presume that's the thinking behind this, anyway) they've dyed his hair black and had him take up smokin' a cig.

Now, all questionable cosmetic changes aside, I find the fact that the DMC team's idea of making someone look cooler is having them take up smoking to be wildly outdated. A character who smoked was cool, oh, fifteen years ago. I think it shows just how desperate and out of touch this reboot may end up being that that's their idea of shorthand for cool.

Thoughts?

Side note: It's possible that the smoking habit was given to show younger Dante as desperate to be cool or reckless and rebellious in the only way a 17-year old idiot would, but I find that somewhat doubtful that this serves legitimate character development.

Smoking is fine, it isn't cool.
It's just a habit you get while doing stuff that some consider 'cool'.
I'm fine with protagonists smoking. Hell, look at Revi - she's awesome and she smokes - does it make her an emo ***** ? Do the cigarettes make the character?
Hell no.

Is there a new DMC trailer out or something? This is the second Dante thread I've seen today.

And, believe it or not, there are still teenagers who think smoking makes them look cool.

Technically, it's the old Dante. Since it's a prequel.

And the real character development here is Dante quit smoking at some point in his lifetime.

Smoking's not cool? Hunh, thats funny, seems like it still is where I live, and I would imagine a good portion of the US,s ince most people smoke in high school and or college.

besides, I'm pretty sure old dante smoked, though I could be mistaken.

and white hair is and has been lame for a while as well.

The fact that he looks like a crack addict bothers me more then the smoking. I didn't even notice it. It is a weird thing to just add but then I don't think the team behind this knows what they're doing anyway.

Maybe they use that as an important gameplay element, you have a nicotine addiction level, and while saving the world you have to keep it down using patches, gum, the smokers helpline and those fake cigarettes, which you will find plastered throughout each level. If you get to the end of the game and the metre is over half full then you die automatically of violent lung cancer.

Smoking is still considered cool by a lot of teens. Sure, you kind of grow past that after 21 or so, but anyone already smoking by then is usually screwed. So even if it's a lame attempt at making him look cooler, I bet they succeeded to the teen crowd...

Actually smoking is cool.

It's totally cool.

What's not cool is White hair, leather boob straps on guys and wearing a trenchcoat.

Smoking does not make Keith Richards look cool, Keith Richards makes smoking look cool. That is the problem with the new Dante smoking, its prop to make him look cool, which it can't do.
