Are you kidding!?
You need Pokemon to end the 7th Layer of the Apocolypse and vanquish Valkarzurhe! /Sarcasm

Because it's fun for people, I guess. It does have a cool look to it. But I mainly play it for nostalgia.

The reason is that its an "easy to learn, hard to master" type of game that appears to involve a great deal of variety while still maintaining the same dynamics in each game. Its got aspects of nostalgia for older players going back to Red and Blue editions, while still gaining new audience in younger viewers which later becomes nostalgic for them. Its continually adding new features to the game encouraging people to go get the newer editions. The thing is, Pokemon has a pick-up-and-play element that you can work with for either small half-hour segments or gigantic 10-hour play sessions. Why its addictive? Its simple and colorful and you get to see some funny little anime monsters shooting beams at each other. Mostly though, you could ask the same about why any game where grind is necessary is addictive: Its because people want to get the best Pokemon at the highest level.
A Pokemon MMORPG would do disturbingly well.

I want to be the very best,
like no one ever was.

To catch them is my real test.
To train them is my cause.

I will travel across the land,
searching far and wide.

Each Pokémon to understand
the power that's inside.

Pokémon!

It's you and me!
I know it's my destiny!

Pokémon!

Oh, you're my best friend
in a world we must defend!

Pokémon!

A heart so true,
our courage will pull us through.

You teach me and I'll teach you
Pokémon!

Gotta catch 'em all
Gotta catch 'em all!

Pokémon!
I think that's a pretty good summary.

It's like a childhood dream.... Being 10, the freedom to travel the distric without anyone asking: "Why are you not at home??" Also cute animals without the smell or the biting. Plus for people of my age (17) it's all anyone would talk about when we were like 7, 8 and 9. It doesn't matter how shit stuff is @ that age, it will always be fun to you.

Pokemon Platinum was my first, played it for 10 hours, and didn't play it again.
Even the 10 hours I did play it, I thought "why did I even play it for so long?"
For a while, it was very addicting, though, but I just...got over it.

Because I found a GBC emulator for my phone and it kept me entertained on bus journeys where I didn't have my PSP.

Red/Blue/Yellow were fun as hell.
Gold/Silver/Crystal were also fun.

I found every Pokemon game made after this to be just redundant and stretching the franchise to thin that it would tear at the slightest cough.

Speaking of addiction, has anyone else noticed that you can still hear the music of the above mentioned title long after you've shut off your Game Boy? I can't count how many times I've had to double and triple check it to make sure it was really off.

If you've ever collected anything, and I mean anything, then you understand the appeal of Pokemon. It's the same appeal as trying to get all the stars in a Mario game or trying to kill all the pigeons in GTA IV.

Admittedly it's not for everyone, but clearly it's appealing to a sufficient number of people for Nintendo to keep making them.

Cause it's a whole world where you gotta catch em all!

Seriously though they've set a target which is innitialy quite easy but slowly becomes more and more difficult, but by that time you're dedicated. And the fact that everyone else was playing makes it a competition. It became cult like, crowds of us sitting together playing the game, swapping advice, trading, battling, all of that.

Recently actually my friends and I started playing the game again via the internet. As well as the nostalgia it felt like a really riveting and convincing RPG (I think that's the term, may be wrong) game, it really emerses you in a totally different world.

Also MissingNo and Mew were something talked about like legend in my school back in the day.

Well for replay value I'd have to say, re-playing it with a new team/starter always gives a different experience. I miss my crobat...
