Whats the deal with games like MW2,BFBC2, and Black ops having Russians as the antagonists? Have game writers really run out of ideas?

And the fact that most people seem to start complaining when you decide to include anything more recent than that. (Medal of Honour Taliban controversy anyone?)

Two of those games are CoD games - they don't deserve to have credited writers. Neither do most games for that matter, but still.

And it's because a lot of people still see things as Russia = Communist = Evil.

Why not? We lost the Cold War. Americans won. They get to make us look like the bad guys.

I have no issue with it, really. At least it shows that Russia is considered a power to be reckoned with.

Making Russia the bad guy sidesteps any accusation of racism (they're white) or religious intolerance.

Also they have the second best villain accents, after Germany.

I perfer prefer playing as russia on BC2. So much cooler than those pansy americans, that's for sure.

Anyway, yeah, but what other nation would you take instead? That would make sense? I'd rather see a third party fighting russian and/or the US. That'd be cool.

Google translate, huh?

I would try to fix that, but I'm sort of lazy. But, really, that last word is incorrect.

Because it's the cool thing to imagine that the nukes had gone off in The Cold War or that Russia decided to attack later on. It's just the done thing right now. It used to be WW2 games, now it's WW3.

Because Russians were the last enemies that America fought which were on the same technological level as the US, and which were perceived as an actual threat.

I mean, what have we had since the Cold War? A bunch of terrorists, in ass backward countries using 60 year old weapons, and home made explosives. Sure, they can kill people, but there is not threat of them ever being a serious threat to the American government.
Pretty much this but also because they are enemies that America lost/tied to. Just like vietnam where they pulled out and signed a peace treaty. So they make these games where they kick some enemy ass but in real life they lost.

I guess people want a little bit of realism. When i say little i mean tiny, the only other enemy would have to be the Chinese in "realistic" fps world.

I'd like to see an original fps that would take huge liberties with modern cultural borders. It would make for much better sequels because you could tie it in anywhere in the world, just give the countries a new name... I say we make Australia the main antagonist, they are surrounded 360 by water. Throw a huge military force on there and lets call it a sturdy dictatorship, kind of like the helghast.

^ This is true. Do not question.

OT: To be fair, Russia is synonymous with Evil these days.

Because Russia's the big baddy the Western world needs for its ego.

I'd like to see a shooter where you simply play as someone else than the Americans, it would open up so many options for enemies because you wouldn't be playing as the most powerful army in the world, which pretty much limits the enemies you can use to Russia and China because everyone else would be a laughable enemy.

And yet no-one is doing that well in these wars. Honestly, the Soviet Union had a fantastic time in Afghanistan, and it shows by how they are now! Oh wait...

OT: Because essentially they're a super power and one that threatened America once. If China did, then we would be shooting them. If Cuba did, we'd have the Bay of Pigs invasion as the new World War 2. It's just what was popular in history. No biggy and we mean nothing by it, besides mocking Russia and probably pissing them off. Must be how Germany and Japan felt after MANY World War Two games.

Calumon: Why does no-one wanna be friends? : (

Maybe because the Russians are bad asses. I'm not their biggest fan, but those guys don't take shit from nobody and aren't shy about showing it off. And honestly, what's more intimidating and charismatic than a deep Russian accent.

How could you want any other enemy.

... In the case of Black Ops - the game takes place during the cold war.

Who else would be the bad guys?

edit: point of note: in CoD 1&2: Russians were protagonists.
