Why Should I Buy the Xbone?

Hello everyone!

I've been following the release of the new consoles like everyone else and, like most people, I have many objections to the Xbox One. As it currently sits, I'm leaning into the PS4 camp. However, whenever I see a topic criticizing the Xbone, a few people inevitably comment that the new Xbox is not as bad as everyone says and so I am curious.

Its easy to justify that something is "not that bad", but I want more than that. I don't want to buy something because its "not as bad as you think it is." I want to buy something because it is good.

So, here's your chance. Why should I buy the Xbone?

By the way, and I know this is like asking poo not to stink, but please let's not make this into a flame war.

Some background:

1. Assume I don't care about any console exclusives.

2. I already have cable and a laptop.

3. I don't really play online with my consoles much, and never with my friends (we have different tastes).

4. I don't care about the Kinect or other gimmick peripherals.

5. I often try to buy used when available and sell my old games when I no longer want them. (though I've been doing less of that lately). However, I do pass down my unwanted games to younger cousins.

6. Also, I already have a PS2 and a 360 (I've also had a PS1 and an Xbox in the past). In short, I have no allegiance to either.

Assuming all of that, why should I buy the Xbone instead of a PS4 or a gaming PC? What does it have to offer me that its competition can not?

If you... want to spend an extra hundred dollars so you can have a digital camera on top of your TV? If you want to buy a console that requires Live membership to buy DLC or watch Netflix, where the PS+ is only needed to play games online but everything else is still functional. I guess if you like Halo or some of the exclusives it's a reason? Honestly you can buy nearly 3 full games for roughly the same price it takes to buy a single game with the Xbone.

You shouldn't... But hey, it's your money. Spend it how you wish.

Captcha: "huggle muggle". It just got weird in here.

You shouldn't.

The only reason why anyone would ever consider it is for the exclusives, and you said you don't care about exclusives, so just don't get one.

Let's see, in order.

1) In that case, get a PS4 as it's cheaper, or a gaming PC, as it's more flexible

2) Ok, then get either a real PC, or a PS4

3) This one is easy, you don't really have the option of not being online with Xbox One at least some of the time

4) Then don't spend $100 extra for a Kinect you don't want, and somewhat inferior hardware in the console itself

5) Only one option here, PS4. Although even new games are often very heavily discounted on PC, especially via Steam

6) Ok, pretty sure I've dealt with this one already.

Apart from a few Exclusive games you've already said you don't care about, there's literally nothing you can't do cheaper and better with a PS4, and nothing you can't do flat-out better with a good gaming PC, (with the exception of used games which PCs don't have)

To piss off all the anti-xbone gamers, that's the only reason I can think of for you to buy it.

One question, do you live in America?

If so you get to make fantasy football league tables (whatever the hell those are) and pay Microsft money to access a service you've already bought (Netflix).

Yeah, between your dislike of Kinect and love of the used games market a PS4 is right up your alley.

If you don't live in America the TV features will not be avalible for you.

Assuming you have Internet access enough to check in every 24 hours :

- Your younger cousins will be able to play games from your games library without the need for you to pass over the disc; you don't need to transfer anything, and they can even play your games while you are.
- You won't need to insert discs to play your games.

Well a PS4 or a PC is a better option. The PS4 is $100 cheaper with no DRM, the PC will have cheaper games, better graphics and mods.

2. I already have cable and a laptop.
Well buy a PS4 or a gaming PC then.

3. I don't really play online with my consoles much, and never with my friends (we have different tastes).
Well with the PS4 Sony aren't gating things like Netflix behind another paywall, so if you don't care about online multiplayer you don't have to worry about that.

4. I don't care about the Kinect or other gimmick peripherals.
Well again, buy a PS4 then. Don't spend an extra $100 on a piece of hardware you don't even want.

5. I often try to buy used when available and sell my old games when I no longer want them. (though I've been doing less of that lately). However, I do pass down my unwanted games to younger cousins.
Well you're out of luck with the Xbox One or a PC then.

6. Also, I already have a PS2 and a 360 (I've also had a PS1 and an Xbox in the past). In short, I have no allegiance to either.
Good, buy a console on its merits, not who's manufacturing it.

Assuming all of that, why should I buy the Xbone instead of a PS4 or a gaming PC? What does it have to offer me that its competition can not?
I think you've already answered that haven't you? Seems obvious the PS4 is what you should go with.

Is that really such a burden? I'd take swapping a disc every now and then over DRM any day. And what do you do when you run out of hard drive space? The Xbone's hard drive isn't swappable.

It'd be stored in the Cloud, I presume. Although that may cause latency issues with your console down the line.

If I have to say only good things...you might want to look at the sharing function, from what I know your cousins would be able to play your games on their accounts for free, providing they're on your friends list.

Everything else is dubious.

You should buy one else CliffyB will throw a hissy fit and start crying.

Have you ever seen a guy with a tribal tattoo cry? It's not pretty.

For me, yes it is. Space in that room is a premium, and I like to swap between games often. With the XOne, I'll be able to just stick all my games into a cupboard in another room (Or removing some from their boxes and using a disc folder thing).
For HD space, you can add external drives, plus once you've registered a game, you can download it as many times as you like, so I really won't have to care.
Meanwhile, I personally couldn't care less about the DRM. It's not particularly harsh as DRM goes. I think I feel this way because of Steam - I've got used to that, and by comparison the XOne is even better.

Of course, this is just my opinion, based on my situation. The OP was just asking for reasons that one might prefer it.

In order:
- This needs to be confirmed, I would wait on exactly how that works since theres no way their going to let people play for free forever, I got the impression from what MS was saying (though this is hard to tell since they kept changing the story) that yes you can share your games but only for a limited time, after that a disc &/or licence purchase is needed.
- Neither do you need a disc for PS4, it's called the PSN (playstation network), use it to buy games, access to the PSN store is free and doesn't need PS+ and thus the XBone has nothing to offer that PS4 doesn't. Actually the PS3 has been offering this for years, for example Journey which won multiple awards is a downloadable game only, on the PS3.

Honestly, you have formulated the question in such a matter that you have answered it yourself. You should not.

- It was confirmed at E3, as well as the fact that your "Family" doesn't need to be actual family members.
- a) This won't allow used games to be bought / sold; something the OP was interested in. b) At the current generation, buying console games on disc has been much cheaper than digital; Digital sales have been priced based on RRP, but many stores sell for less. As this is mandated by game stores, I don't see that changing. With XOne, having the disc means you unlock the digital version too.

Yeah, I'll just join the choir on this one.

You shouldn't.

As a minor detail, you got your lineup a bit wrong.

PSX = lonely contender, there was no competition

XBOX and PS2 are pretty comparable

360's contender would be the PS3, which you seem to have skipped.

With the upcoming two major releases from both Sony and Microsoft, the hardware specs are pretty... similar. How both firms intend to handle the actually letting you enjoy your stuff and play your games, however, does not - as of now - look comparable much.

Yeah, I'm team PS4, no doubt about it. There will be some annoyances for me and my specific strain of consumerism. But the Xbone... nah, my life is demanding and funky enough, no need to make it more sad and spice it up with Microsoft's black box of doom.

So you're willing to get shafted, have your privacy invaded, your game become unplayable when the servers eventually die, all to save a little space?
