Stop me if my theory has already been recognised but I coudldnt find it anywere.

I have a theory as to why the escapist let Zynga, a browser game developer into the march mayhem tournament thing.

Due to the large number of people within the facebook communities there are bound to be plenty who consider themselves gamers yet have not come across the escapist before, many who after voting decide to have a browse around the escapist and find something to their taste (eg. yahtzee or doralias and associates) and tonnes of whome have nothing better to do but go through the forums because they are bored of doing nothing on facebook and wish for a change of scenary in which to waste their time.

Basically I think this is all a ploy by the escapist to make the community larger (not neccecarily better) for whatever other evil schemes they have planned. Whome better to recruit but those who dont really have anything better to do anyway beause they are on a social networking site probably playing farmville and looking for something else to do whilst their crops grow.

Could've been. Or it could've been that Zynga's (unfortunately in my opinion [But that's just my opinion.])a popular "games" developer.

"browser game's developer" Ive highlighted this in other posts aswell. Farmville, mafia Wars whatever, they are browser games not video games which all the other developers develop. There are plenty of browser game developers well before Zynga why them? why dont we have more of them? Why dont we have board game developers? thats a "game".

You know, it's a damn shame. I mean, it's not like the escapist would want more traffic and thus money to help pay all the people creating all the content that you and I use up for free every day. They should just shut down and leave us out in the dark.

Or, we can realize that this is the real world, the escapist is an awesome place, and that a lot of people like Zynga, no matter what we feel.

Because everybody should be included I guess.

Imagine if Evony was in the MM, I think that would have hilarious consequences.

And in one fell swoop, Pimp brings it all to a close once again.

If you have to make a theory about something, chances are it's wrong, and the answer is in fact money.

LOL, regardless, in the world of the internet, traffic to your site results in more ad-views which results in more revenue... so yes, while they are not charging us for the content, they are indeed making money, and MM is definitely driving up ad revenue.

That being said, there's no doubt in my mind that this was predicted from the get-go. The only thing that I believe the person(s) behind MM are surprised with is the amount of people that actually voted for Squeenix instead. Which in my mind is a huge win.

From a business perspective... the more traffic you have, the more people will want to advertise with you... so even if the net result of 10,000 Zynga customers joining your site just to vote once and go away, if you can even retain 10% of that as regular viewership, that's a huge deal to advertisers in this demographic.

Actually, no. It is not that for me, although it is admittedly a factor.

It is because these users have only come here for the voting in Zynga's polls, making the fight completely one sided in their favor. They put in zero votes in any other match going on, they post zero things, and I would bet my soul on the fact that more than 90% of the people trafficked in for this won't ever return here in their life, or at least because of this.

I also have proof of this.
At the time of typing this, the Square Enix v. Zynga match is 5555 to 6872, obviously in Zynga's favor. This equates to roughly 12,300 "members". At the same time, the Valve v. Bethesda Softworks match is 3290 to 1919, (happily) in Valve's favor. This equates to roughly 5,200 members. It's obvious as the sun shining outside (depending on location) or the skin on your hand (depending on your last exposure to nuclear weaponry) that these Zynga "members" have solely voted in the Zynga threads.
Now, tell me. How many of them have actually posted? How many have actually revealed themselves? How many have done anything more than vote?

Face it.
These people aren't Escapists.
They're just numbers.

Although ill admit not many of them %wise will stay, even a small % (ie 5%) would still be worth it due to the amount of people in the first place.

And I have seen a few of them acctually, not many mind you but there still there.

Except for their being very low-value customers, so to speak. They show up, vote for Zynga like Facebook told them to, then leave. Themis Media is on the hook for the bandwidth those people wasted, and they get no clickthrough revenue on advertising from them.

Quality is more important than quantity---ideally you want everyone in your audience to overlap perfectly with everyone who would be interested in your advertisers.

(then again, what do I know? I use Adblock Plus and hate with every fiber of my being the very notion of being marketed to.)
