The other day a thought dawned on me, the wii would actually be a real good platform for real time stratagy games, certainly better than any other consol. The wii-mote would actually make a point and click interface work and you could point at different menus easily meaning that you could use a mini-map and you don't really need that many buttons for a Real Time Stratagy game. So I guess the question is why havn't more poeple developed Real Time Stratagy games for the wii and will we see any in the future?

Because pointing a remote at the screen isn't the same as using a mouse.
Consoles aren't good for traditional RTS controls whatsoever.

It is good for RTS games in theory, and I agree with that theory. Battalion Wars works very well, and is a very enjoyable RTS game with a good system. It's something that just needs time, they will take advantage of the control soon enough.

True, but he didn't say traditional RTS controls. Halo Wars adapted RTS around the limitations and abilities of the 360 controller, so I assume the same would be done for a Wii remote.

EDIT: Whoops sorry for the double post.

But Halo Wars was a mediocre, at best, RTS.
And the controls were terrible.

Developed for the 360 controller? Sure.
But the limitations were blatant and in-your-face, and the superiority of mouse controls for an RTS was even more apparent. It's one thing when you're aiming a gun to shoot a guy. I like both the mouse controls and the game-pad controls for FPS games. But it's an entirely different thing when you're trying to direct units to specific places on the battlefield, trying to select specific guys for a task that has to be done quickly in order to survive.
The mouse can do that, controllers cannot.
Save Endwar, which, to me, had the best RTS controls on a console yet. Say what you want about the gameplay (I liked it), but using voice controls made it simple, and effective. No pinpoint selections needed, thus the major flaw of the controller for RTS games was removed.

A while ago I made a glove pie script for playing Black and White (or B&W2) with the wiimote on the Pc.

It worked really well, almost like the game was made to be played that way. I also experimented with AoE2 and the total war series but Rts' but I couldn't get it to work as well as i'd hoped (though it was awesome in rome TW).

I made a vid of b&w in action and i'll put it somewhere to show you if I can find it.

Consoles relly aren't made for RTS games, the combination of keyboard + mouse is simply too superior for those games and you'd have to show some true innovativeness to come up with a better controller system. Personally I can't even begin to fathom a system better suited for RTS with current technology. However, if we begin to compare between consoles only, then Wii might have a decent chance at being a good console RTS interface.

Or at least better than others.

Maybe once the the controller is 1 to 1 they can make hand gestures be a way to hotkey, but that was the massive flaw with Halo Wars and every other console RTS. The controls work, but when there are eight things going on at once, you need a complex interface that a console doesn't provide just yet.

i think the person who makes a system to make RTS games playable at the same level that in the PC is going to win a lot of money. And RTS AND FPS AT CONSOLES IS WORSE THAN PC NOWADAYS PERIOD.

This one speaks the truth.

The Wiimote is good for RTSs, however the Wii itself is not so much in my opinion.
Many RTSs feature a good amount of units on the screen at which point i'm thankful for every bit of screen resolution i can get - and PAL isn't really that great. Also, while you can go down in terms of graphical effects to a reasonable point, RTSs take a good deal of memory and processing power aswell in order to calculate AI, unit routes and such.
The lack of hotkey-able buttons can be somewhat conquered by a good graphical interface, but all-in-all i think the mouse+keyboard combination is still way ahead of any other control scheme.
I'd like to see my points shattered by a really good Wii-RTS that can compare with the titles you get for PC, but i think all you will get is some watered-down experience.

the Wii's power limits its potential... since you need to be able to generate lots of characters at once for your usual RTS, graphics are rather important for the genre...

which is why I'm looking forward to the potentials that the PS3 motion controller might have for good RTS games, since it has WAAAAY more power than the Wii :)

it's because rts is like the ultimate hardcore gamer genre, and there might be problems with power
