Will Mass Effect continue without Shepard (slight spoilers)

Now amidst the tidbits being released about Mass Effect 3's story. How Shepard will be fighting Cerberus and so on. But I've been wondering, what happens if Shepard died. Do we get some other new ultimate badass, or will Mass Effect 3 only be playable with a save where Shepard survived. How do you think the 3rd could replace Shepard.

I don't have the source on me but I could have sworn I read some were that Sheppard had to survive mass effect 2 for the save to be imported to 3.

You can only carry over a save if he survives. I'm about 95% sure on that.

That's been stated by the developers, so it's probably right. They said Shepard's story ends if he/she dies.

Did you not read any of the other dozens of thread EXACTLY like this? or even read the little notes during loading? If Shepard dies, game over. ME3 will only carry on a save from ME2 is you live. And how did you manage to die anyway?

The way Joker was moving about at the end, maybe some other group could beef him up and we could have a smartass capping Reapers!

It's a shame they would never do that, because I might just end up killing Shepard off in one of my saves just for that. Odds are they would just use a Shepard clone or bring him back from the dead... again. Otherwise they would need another two voice actors for the lead role and that doesn't seem very likely.

The project director has repeatedly said that the Mass Effect Trilogy is Shepard's story, and that if he/she dies at the end of Mass Effect 2, then the story for that particular Shepard just ends a little sooner. No imports of dead Shepards.

If you try to load a save file with a dead Shepherd, the game will tell you to go fuck yourself (no offense on my part). Bioware has already stated that having Shepherd die at the end of a save file means that it can't be used.

Edit: Wow, everyone is pouncing on this. I was expecting that to happen, but that was fast!

Just to add to the fact the developers have said it...

During one of the loading screens in ME2 it states something along the lines of

"Be sure to keep your saved files for Mass Effect 3....if you survive."

Don't know how much clearer it can be
