Just a quick notice to everyone that Windows 7 is finally finished, but you will all still have to wait until October 22nd to purchase it:

Cool. If its on the way to manufacturers is it likely there'l be pre-built PCs with it installed on the the market by Oct22nd?
Or is there usually a lag in the PC manufacturers getting it installed?

Hmmm you can get it for £79:99 if you preorder from play.com, but I'm not sure if its worth it, I've had no trouble with Vista and don't see much point in upgrading to get a slightly better interface and slightly better performance. (Well going from what I've heard from reviews anyway).

The first ones might have a pre-release build of Windows 7 just so they can ship PCs claiming legitimately to have Windows 7. The Beta & Pre-release build have been out for ages., I'm running it now.

Im sure there will be a lag because Microsoft probably set a limit with how many Vista OS's they would install and I doubt if they only planned on vista being around for this short of a time frame.

Its like when cops buy Crown Victoria's, they promise to buy so many until their contract runs out.

It also takes up less space on your hard drive, that was the last nail in the coffin for me with Vista. I'm planning on 7 being better so I can get Vista off of my laptop.

Well, from the looks of the article they have finished the software months ahead of its consumer distribution so that Office Equipment Manufacturers can have it pre-installed around the same time. It would be pretty stupid not to do this given that most people will have to upgrade their hardware for Windows 7 from XP (if they had the good sense to avoid Vista). It would give them the opportunity to run the Aero interface and Direct X 10 - which both need greater graphics acceleration. Of course, Microsoft will assert that "you don't need a new computer to run 7", but everyone will take this opportunity to shop for a replacement, perhaps giving their old PC to a relative.

What country are you in and what OS do you currently have? In the EU there won't be 'upgrade' versions available, just the full copy. The upgrade jumps from Vista - 7 and is usually a lot cheaper The full installs on any blank hard drive.
Coz the EU are a bunch of fucktards there won't be cheap upgrades available for Vista users so Microsoft have announced that the full versions will be reduced until January (approx £79.99 for premium - PC World had pre-orders for £45!) After January however the price will double in the EU

EDIT: forgot to quote, that was @JWAN

It's pretty good, haven't encountered any problems. It's fast and pretty, without too much interference in what you want done.

Will it be the same for just the "upgrade" or will it still suck up memory like Alzheimers Disease

I think I'll upgrade my PC, then get W7. If only my motherboard was able to accept a good graphics card...
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't W7 come with Dx11?
Saw the vids on youtube, it looks amazing

Due to a recent hard disk failure and a license issue with the Windows Vista that came with the laptop when I bought it, my mother-in-law is now running Ubuntu. She was already using Firefox and OpenOffice so switching wasn't all too hard for her. Going through this experience made me realize that there really are valid and free alternatives to Windows. I used to advise people to buy a copy of Windows (back when 98 or XP was the standard) but if even my mother-in-law has no issues with running linux on her desktop, I'm adjusting my opinion.

Oh, by the way... given that this is The Escapist, I am hopeful that the coming of 7 will simplify those lists of System Requirements on the back of PC videogames. Within a matter of months, expect to see new releases require 7 as that will mean Direct X 10, etc. etc. PC Gaming is far too hit and miss in this regard and I can well understand why many gamers are choosing consoles over yet another fiddly hardware upgrade. What, are your thoughts on this? Will you return to the PC platform for your gaming now that 7 is here, or is it still too technical and expensive?

It looks like Windows 7 is turning out to be what Vista tried and failed to be, awsome.

I'm gonna have to agree with george on this one, i have both vista and the 7 RC installed on my laptop, and they're essentially the same thing. I have a massive hard drive, so the whole space things really a non-issue for me

I'm a network admin and through a partnership with Microsoft I've had Win 7 for a little while. I'm hoping microsoft gets a couple of the kinks out before the launch since it's already crashed on two computers during a stress test. Right now it seems okay for personal use but not for business and the latter is what I mainly need it for. A lot of my clients couldn't even upgrade to Vista if they wanted to because the software they ran. It is hoped that with win 7 that companies will begin supporting it - which was a main problem with Vista.
