Windows 7 is overrated

Okay, so I don't understand why people are like such raving retards over Windows 7. It's Vista 2.0. If you idiots hated Vista so much what the hell is so different about Windows 7 that's like it's the complete polar opposite of Vista? I mean, people who swore Vista off like it was H1N1 are now embracing Windows 7 with a fervor I can only describe as "Mac fanboyish". I've used Windows 7, there's nothing in it that impressed me enough to entice me to buy it.

Contrary to the "popular" opinion, I do not use XP. In fact, my computer has been setup to dual boot Windows XP Pro and Vista Home Premium 64-bit for a long time. I used to just keep using XP out of familiarity (Not from disliking Vista). But finally, XP just pissed me off for the last time. It runs so slow, it takes ages to log on, it crashes for stupid stuff like opening a window, it takes forever to start like three tasks on startup, takes ages to log in. I mean I got sick of it, despite cleaning my registry and doing spyware checks and obviously virus checks it still did all this to me. The defrag broke itself and wouldn't let me defrag my hard drive anymore, the system backup broke itself so I couldn't use it anymore, the whole thing just turned to shit for no real reason I can figure out other than being installed on my hard drive for about two years. Someone else told me "Just format and reinstall, XP screws up it's own install after a certain amount of time it seems." Wtf? I'm not formating and losing all my data (297 GB worth) and why the hell would it screw itself up if nothing affected it (No viruses or anything)!?

So I started using Vista all the time (And mind you that's what I have on my laptop which I admittedly use sparsely but it's there nonetheless). The experience is amazing comparatively, everything opens fast, nothing locks up, startup and login is speedy, everything works. My father also switched from XP to Vista after so many BS problems and loves Vista and doesn't want to use XP anymore. On my machine, games still run fast - and now unlike my XP which crashed randomly when playing games after awhile giving a blue screen, Vista has never done it. I also have DX10, for whatever benefit it might provide as well (Seems negligble to me, but it probably makes small differences I can't immediately notice).

Now in light of this, I'm trying to get it right in my head what other people think:

1) OMG, XP IS TEH BEST THING EVAR INVENTED!
2) VISTA R TEH SUX!
3) WINDOWS 7 IS TEH NEW BEST THIN EVAR!

...uhm? Okay, XP sucks (See it from my viewpoint if you don't agree). It was nice when it was around and it was the new thing but meh, since using Vista exclusively I like it better - no more stupid crashing and problems. I am actually on XP right now typing because I never got around to installing MS Office in Vista and already the thing has locked up several times while doing some research for a paper and it took like 15 minutes to boot up and finally log in and stop loading stuff (three startup items mind you). Vista does not suck, despite what morons like to shout because they are like parrots and can repeat what one guy said. I have tons of stuff plugged into my computer and Vista recognizes all of it no problem. But more over, I don't understand how Vista haters love Windows 7 other than it's not called Vista. It's so similar to Vista that one could confuse one for the other (not like Windows 7 looks like XP or something) - it's still Aero, it still has that round start button, there's just a few tweaks on how folders and stuff are organized in My Computer and whatnot. I laughed when a video talking up Windows 7 pointed out the ability to select the window you open from the start bar in the preview pane. That was never a concern even on XP, Vista's preview window helps in all the ways I really need to open a window.

I think a lot of people were on the "Vista Sucks" bandwagon and wouldn't ever use it because a few people loudly stated they didn't like it, so they made Windows 7 and fixed those few issues the loud mouth people complained about so now those people shouted how they like it, and thusly everyone else like sheep followed. Do people even try something before they say it sucks? Because I'll bet most of the people who hate Vista have not ever sat down and tried to use it or done anything more than play with it in a computer store on a floor model computer or for a few minutes on a friends computer. Use it for a few months, it's a great OS. I'm a PC gamer and I honestly have no quells with Vista - I've even been playing the original Fallout without a hitch and that's from '97...

If you have nothing to say, don't say it. This can be considered a low-content post, which it is.

Anyway, I am pretty much always on my laptop, which has Windows Vista, and the desktop computer has Windows 7. The desktop one is quicker with opening programs, and extracting files et cetera, but that's because it was formatted right before putting on W7.

So yeah, I'm here, using Vista, and have been for a long, loong time, and I've not noticed any big problems with it. I don't like that Windows 7 doesn't have separate windows, but all of them are under one (either Firefox, MSN or whatever) icon.

People have had different experiences with Vista - partly depending on how familiar they are with computers, and also on what they're using their computer for. Personally, Vista bugged the heck out of me on a daily basis, and gave only a few sparse upgrades to XP's functionality.

Whether or not 7 is *over**rated, it cannot possibly be *worse* than Vista.

Don't be so melodramatic. Seriously, it won't take you THAT long to replace your 297 gigs of preggo pr0n.

Vista is bad. My computer in school is above minimal requirements and last time it took it 10 minutes to relog. TO RELOG. It would be... probably... faster to just hard reset it.

XP is great. Windows 7 is better, as it's newer (meaning I can finally use DirectX 10), looks nicer and runs only a little bit slower when compared to XP. I never had any of those problems you are describing. Either you trashed your PC with junk or you have a crappy hardware (really, really crappy). I clean-installed both XP and Windows 7 two weeks ago or so, and had zero problems. I don't think I got a single lock-up or BSOD... except for Champions Online, but at that time it was a widely-acknowledged game fault, many people with different systems had the same problems.

Also, counter this: XP's support ends in 2014, Vista's 2012. Which OS will live longer? XP will be over 13 years old at the end of it's life. And Vista will be... how old?

I do think(only used XP) this is because vista stumbled upon a sort of uncanny valley for OS's. XP put itself firmly(mind it was shaky for a bit) on the lower peak, while vista tried to make the jump and failed badly, and now it would seem that 7 is using some climbing hooks to get out of the valley.

Mind you I've only used XP, and I can only say that XP simply hates you(or your PC is made of weak-sauce) because it takes me maybe 30 seconds to load 7+ programs at startup(I like my various programs =-3), that and lots of the default programs suck beyond belief, and can easily be replaced by oodles of free ones(hell there are uber taskmanagers). As for the crashes, well unless I'm using something I know is a little unstable(betas are fun) or am doing something I know might screw stuff up I rarely ever get a crash(and I actually have a fair number of things working against that too).

Fun fact of the day sleepless zombie night is: a CPU can overheat within seconds of having the heatsink taken off, but Intel pentium 3 and 4(at least) had safety measures to protect the CPU. The P3 simply(from what I've seen) cuts power to the CPU to stop it from overheating, while the P4 throttles the CPU's power(slowing it down) to keep it cool, but AMD Athlon 1200 and 1400 simply fry at several hundred degrees(around 300 Celsius).Oh and after your OS starts up you don't need the bios chip, and it can be removed(this was done on an old computer).

I'm using a Vista right now and I agree with you, I never really saw the problem with it but whenever I tried my friends that Vista wasn't bad they constantly brought up terrible excuses not to use it, on of my friends even made up this wierd 'fact' apparently the Vista uses 10x the RAM to store files and games, I've never noticed that myself.

I have 2 pc's here at home and one has been running XP happily for about 2 years and the other has had XP > Vista > Windows 7.
I have to say that from my experiences. Vista IS a lumbering resource hog. Despite it being on a faster machine it takes longer to do similar tasks than the XP every time. Since I have only been playing with Windows 7 for a short time I haven't been able to do so much on it. But it does run faster than Vista ever did, uses less resources and generally is a pain in the ass as it promotes MS products and seems to trip up competitor software with "you need permission" and other such messages.

Dude, it's an operating system, you use it to access programs and hope your computer doesnt crash.
Windows 7 is, to quote penny arcade, less bad than you expected. 7 runs better than vista, this you can't deny.

I had a fresh install of Vista inexplicably die on me after a couple of months, so I went back to XP, and I haven't had a problem since.

At the moment, Windows 7 does have some difficulties running certain games, or so a quick Google search will reveal (whether or not alleged problems are actually a result of upgrading to W7 is a whole other ball game which I won't go into).

Not to mention, the fact that Microsoft makes upgrading from XP straight to W7 impossible doesn't help.

So, I can see why some gamers are keeping conservative about it, and staying with XP/Vista. I myself run Windows 7 as it stands (the computer came with it), and have not had any trouble running games. Perhaps it's because this is a fairly high-spec machine, but not necessarily.

Nah, it's really not...

I loved Vista, and they may be Vista 2.0... But why would that be a bad thing?

I never really liked XP much, apart from media edition, that was very pleasant. But still, not as user friendly and functional as Windows 7.

Never hated vista and I dislike seeing these petty squabbles over two products that worked exactly the same for me (neither had any less problems than the other when I tried em).

Plus it is tearing us PC users apart!
Then again, even with that more people use PCs over Macs...

Really? Can you change it? That sucks pretty major balls for me as I've always hated that.

OT: I'm a vista user, I apparentlymissed the memo when that said everybody has to hate it and have had problems with XP since day one, add on that despite all the negative media early it has consistantly outperformed XP for rather a long time and I found one really easy decision to upgrade. As I need a format figured I had nothing to lose by installing 7 (as my understanding is it's the same OS with a few tweaks), but if it has the gay 'group taskbar items' option forced on then I may not bother, not convinved it adds anything of substance anyway.

The main problems people seemed to have with vista was an inability to install up to date graphics drivers (as it did take a few releases before they worked adequately) and apparently navigating the control panel to turn of UAC was 'impossible' according to many of the haters.

Of course the operating system could be worse than vista, if it does add anything of substance to it's predecessor then it's a pointless operating system, if it implements functions that make the system more difficult to use (which is obviously not the same as making it difficult to use, I'm in no way claiming it does this, I've not used it) then it is a worse release than vista (though I don't think there are as many 'pseudo operating systems' released under 7, the only vista release worth touching was ultimate).

I find Windows 7 to be great. It's highly optimized, and almost all games run under fine and if there are problems, a small big of configuration can fix this. Start up times have improved greatly for me under Windows 7, along with other areas which have been optimized. Plus, there's the DX10 and 11 support, which is great.

Your text wall didn't seem to point out any technological comparisons, just the points you hate about some users. W7 is not overrated, it's the best thing Microsoft has done since XP service pack 2.
