Futuristic racer pioneer Wipeout has been given a fresh coat of 700mph-resistant paint and is out, gaining some favourable reviews. Although merely a collection of upgraded and polished previous games, it appears to have come at a time when the genre is getting a bit more love, perhaps paving the way for other devs to improve upon the formula. Present opinion measurements are;

What say ye of this shiny speedy whizfest of varying angular cheesegraters and doorstops? Would you be seen at 2:30am on 4 cans of strong energy drink sliding majestically through futuristic cityscapes to the pounding hypnotic beats of The Prodigy?

If I had a PS4 and didn't already own WipeOut HD Fury (and thus the majority of this collection), I'd buy it. I do enjoy me some WipeOut. It better let you use custom soundtracks tho. Not that there is anything wrong with the basic package, but I liked being able to expand or outright replace the tracklist in HD Fury.

I suppose it's not surprising that it reviews pretty well. WipeOut gameplay has a pretty timeless quality to it, while being solid to begin with. It worked back in the PS1 era and still did on PS3, with only minimal change. There's no reason it wouldn't still work today.

The best thing about those games was being able to play the music in a CD player. The game itself can take a running jump. Or more accurately, a turbocharged boost into a brick wall on a 90 degree bend.

Oh yeah, and the OD advert. Heh.

Two thoughts occur:

1: How in the ever-loving FUCK did I not know this was coming?!

2: I now know where ~$35 of my next paycheck are going...
