Hey everyone, pretty soon here i'm going to have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. Now the procedure isn't the thing thats scaring me, but its the stuff that happens afterwards that worries me, mainly because I have never taken a swallow-able pill in my entire life. This sometimes is a surprising fact, also i'm surprisingly healthy though a bit on the weak side. Now is swallowing pain pills necessary for the pain I may feel after the fact? Any tips on swallowing pills?

Well, when I first tried swallowing pills, I had to do it with a liquid I liked, so I did it with soda. I couldn't do it with water, but had no issue when I did it with soda. Maybe try something similar?

I don't know if its necessary...

But just put it as far back on your tongue as you can without choking, then drink some water and just try and swallow the pill in it.

It gets easier with time.

Yeah, I've never been able to swallow pills either. Protip: You don't have to. You can get liquid medicine to quell the pain. I drank stuff that we were able to make bubblegum flavoured after I got my wisdom teeth out.

I may have to get mine pulled soon as well. I'm more terrified about waking up during the procedure. I've never been knocked out for an operation before but I've heard horror stories of people waking up in the middle of a knee operation. Agh. Scary.

When I had two (normal) teeth pulled, I had to rinse out my mouth with salt water for two weeks.
Nothing can prepare you for that.

If you have trouble swallowing pills, take them with water/cola/tea/blood, it makes them go down much easier.

I personally take all my pills with flat soda (flat so that any belches dont cause them to get stuck in my throat...not fun)

Yes, toss the pills to that back of your mouth/throat and take huge gulps of water. Or if you prefer go with your favourite beverage, like say pop or something.

Put it in your mouth and swallow it with water.

If that doesn't work just stick the pill in a sandwich or something. (It should work for the first one)

I know that when I had my wisdom teeth out, my jaw and cheeks were swollen for about a week, but I didn't take any pain killers for any of it. My dentist didn't brace my jaw while he was extracting the lower ones, even though he had to section them and pry them out, piece by piece. Mind you, he did point out that he would have braced almost anyone else, and the reason he didn't with me is because he noticed that I was actually capable of locking my jaw muscles beyond his ability to move them. I did require more freezing agent every 30 minutes or so, due to the way my body processes drugs, though.

Also, if you smoke, try to avoid doing so while your gums are healing; I didn't slow down much on the smoking, and I ended up with REALLY BAD 'dry socket' on one side.

I never had to get my wisdom teeth out. My jaw was big enough luckily, because I can't swallow a pill either. There are many other things to take besides pills though. Or, you can buy a pill crusher and put it in applesauce or something like that.

They gave me Oxycontin for the extraction. The main thing you'll worry about is eating semi-solid foods, as you don't want anything to get in the holes in your mouth. I suggest drinking broth for the first few days and eating Jello.

When the pain comes, it's not too bad. Funny story, the pain I had was equal to getting softly pinched so I took an Oxy. I laid in bed and the pain wasn't fading, so I popped another before realizing that they're time-release pills.

I watched Monk for six hours laughing like a stoner while making a snow-angel in my bed and blankets. :p

waking up from what in the Netherlands we just get some injections to not feel the pain i was aware during the whole procedure.
and i wouldn't worry to much about the pain afterwards unless your gums are grown all over the wisdom teeth you wont have that much pain.
as for tips for swallowing pills try not to think about the size of the pill too much and imagine it being a small pill, that helped me the first time and I've never had problems with it after that

Use water, it takes getting used to.

I remember in Army training (AIT) for my job. I had a friend that had 4 (at least, maybe more I do not remember) wisdom teeth pulled all at once. He was in so much pain that he could not even eat solid food for a week and had to be brought his food for every meal. Even pancakes had to be soaked to make them softer so he could eat them.

Depends on the procedure, are they already above the gumline or is he going to have to cut them out?

If he has to cut, there will be noticeably more pain, you'll need decent painkillers in that case.

If he's just pulling them you'll be fine with some over the counter soluble or chewable pills.

If you're worried tell your doctor you can't swallow pills he may be able to prescribe an alternative.

I never used to be able to swallow but I started taking little vitamin pills and it turns out with practice you can swallow them. Maybe pick yourself up some vitamin pills and practice. It's more convenient in the long run.

It's mostly all mental anyway, we swallow chunks of food larger than any pill without thinking about it.

It probably won't be as bad as you think. I had a really nasty wisdom tooth extraction done a few years back. It had not come through properly and was decaying in the gum. I won't go into the more grisly details but the dentist was not able to remove it in one piece.

After the anesthetic wore of it only really hurt for a few days. I didn't need to take any pain medicine at all, so with any luck you should be fine.

Swallowing the pill is most defiantly necessary
I had mine taken out, and I was in so much pain when the meds wore off

When I had my wisdom teeth extracted, I had 4 taken out at once, top and bottom. I was prescribed Tylenol 3 for the pain, but for some reason it's never had that much effect, so it was pretty bad. That is until I switched to more traditional "herbal" remedies. That helped me ignore the pain and let me sleep too. It may not be that bad, either, cause with mine I was eating solid foods 3 days after.

You know what you can do if you don't want to take your medicine?

You can take those pills and shove them up your arse!

But seriously, suppositories are a good alternative delivery method, since it bypasses the gastric system and which makes the pills more effective, as they're not dissolved by acid and usually gets into your blood-stream quicker.

Talk to your dentist before the procedure, as they'd be able to give you the best advice and write a prescription for what ever form of pain relief is best for your situation.

I remember when I got mine removed, it was terrible. I didn't take any pills though, it took about a week for my mouth to feel better. The pain was pretty damn bad, the pills are actually pretty good, I stopped taking them though because of the side effects. You can probably tough out the pain but I'd actually recommend the pills.
