I love sonic adventure 2. The gameplay, the music, and even the story were awesome
Disagree. Hated the treasure hunt levels, hated the shooting levels, hated Knuckles' music (Yeah we in Aquatic Mine mothafucka!) Hero story was endlessly padded. Nothing happens in it, especially when Tails or Knuckles take over, Sonic's second-fiddle to Shadow in his own game.
To be fair, the Evil story was pretty boss and every character
there really shined (yes, even Rouge the Bat--in a group like that, you need a new set of eyes to look at what's going on and unravel the mysteries). The overall quality of the game still turns out pretty good, with some of the best level design of the 3D Sonic games to date for Sonic and Shadow's levels, but all in all, I felt like this was the Sonic title that launched 90% of the bad trends that landed everything up through Sonic 2006 in such hot water.
My favorite is Sonic Adventure 1. I don't even think it's necessarily the best 3D Sonic title to date (that title goes to Colors), but it was innovative as hell and did a great job blending all the things we had come to associate with Sonic up to that point. It had the continuity and sense of fun that made the Genesis games, it had the sense of mischief from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and the comics, and it had some of the darker-ish tone from SatAM. Where past Sonic games were just about being the pinball with legs, this one was dedicated solely to fleshing out the universe of these games, realizing the world in which Sonic belonged in a more believable and strongly defined light. I don't know what it is about Station Square, but to this day it stands to me as the best hub world the Sonic games has ever had.
