Do you think that it will close, and if it does, do you think game prices will shoot down?

If so, GAMING SPREE!

I didn't think Woolworth's was big enough to drive the economy into a slump.

Yeah, but I think he means that they will have big sales. Which if they do close, which would be a shame, but still every cloud has a silver lining.

Shit. Woolies is a big part of my childhood. I even worked in my local Woolies for a while.

Bummer.

First I've heard about it. Although I tend to not use Woolworths anymore so it won't affect me. It would be pretty cool if everything was slashed in order to be quickly sold.

I haven't seen a Woolworth's in over twenty years; they died out here in Canada in the mid-80s... so no, no buying spree for me. I do feel a bit of nostalgia, though, at the thought that they may be dying altogether.

I wouldn't say it was a big part, but I have fond childhood memories of Woolies.

My local Woolworths still has Assassin's Creed priced at £44.99...
WHSmith is exactly the same, as is any form of jack-of-all-trade shops. I don't think that the thought of competitive pricing has ever occurred to them... leading to the closure of Woolworths.

Wow, Woolworths is huge in Australia. I can't imagine them going under. If they die off then all we have to contend with are the Coles-Myer group, and I've never had as satisfactory a shopping experience in their stores whether it be video games or groceries.

There is a lot of talk that Woolies is going bust. Shares have dropped 90% in the past 12 months. They've obviously been keen to stop the rot with the introduction of their own Basic Essentials brand but, as you say, if they aren't going to compete on the one thing that seems to sell in any quantity these days,ie: gaming, they won't survive.

Still, anyone who uses Jackie Chan and Rolf Harris in such a way deserves everything they get.

[disclaimer: This thread I believe is referring to the British Wollworths retail chain. There are several others in the world that this doesnt apply to. Read http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7751064.stm]

I kinda hope Woolworths doesnt dissapear; I like the familiarity of there having been one within walking distance wherever I live. That said; first sign of firesales & im in there grapping as much choclate as I can.

Sorry for my ignorance but...what exactly is Woolworth's? Is it a British store or something? I've never even heard of it before...

Its a very old British highstreet retailer. Sadly it is completely bankrupt & in like £350mill debt with no1 wanting to buy it so its gone into administration & chances are will have the best parts of its carcass snapped up by competitors & the rest discarded & dumped.
