I'm kind of hoping there are some peeps who have played this game that I can kind of vent with. (So apologies if this is a little rant-y.)
This is part of a bigger issue between "organic cutscenes" in games, but having just finished The New Order, I was blown away by how unbelievably stupid Blascovich is in the cutscenes, and how determined the game is to portray him as such.
There's a huge amount of dissonance between the moments when you're dropping thirty guys in a room and then you step through the next door and some guy jumps you from around a corner. Even when you know it's coming, its unavoidable.
So often, Blasco gets jumped, tackled, stabbed, or knocked out into a cutscene, usually involving a needle getting jammed into him, always in situations that could have been avoided. And this is always made the more jarring by the game's insistence that you're supposed to check every nook and cranny for secret files, health/armor powerups, and all kinds of things.
What kind of tipped it for me, finally, was when Engel's boy, Bubi, jumps onto you from the top of a ladder and shoots you up with a drug compound. As I'm walking into the area, I was expecting a trap, and off-handedly, I even threw a grenade up into the vent at the top of the ladder for kicks. And then this guy half Blasco's size is able to suddenly subdue him?
Grr... It was just an annoyance, especially in a game that seems to have thought through much of the gameplay, and which was genuinely entertaining.
Okay, rant over. Thanks for reading.
