When I first heard about this game on the MMO Report I laughed and wondered who would want to play a game like this....

For those who do not know what World of Tanks is, it's a MMO Game that's based around World War 2 tanks (Currently US / USSR and Germany) and it's very much a capture the flag style game.

Initially I got roped in to the Beta test by a few friends at work, it was something that didn't cost to play, seemed like an interesting way to kill some time and hey you got to blow up other people with cannons.

- My impressions of the beta
It was fun... you had epic items (cost was gold) and we were given 250 gold per day

In my 6 months of beta testing I received enough xp to go from the laughable Leichttraktor all the way up to the fearsome Tiger II.

What I found thou was the balance was off, and not by a little but there were some significant holes in both the match making and the balance of the Tier 8 tanks.

The tiger II was a fearsome machine capable of dominating a battlefield when used correctly, yet against a similar matched Russan Tier 8 / US Tier 8 it was a pale shadow of it's historical strength.

The Tier 9 and 10 German tanks were either hypothetical experiments and I never bothered trying to get these tanks, You could barely damage them in a Tier 8 and they were unbalanced in comparison to the Russian / US equivalents.

Then the company stated they were releasing the game in April

April came, the game was released to the public and there were pre orders. Along with these pre orders came a massive amount of balance changes, mechanic changes, two new maps and a promise that french tanks and us tank destroyers will be the next major implementations.

The Balances so far have worked, I'm only leveling slowly this time. The game is feeling a little more balanced, the lag has oddly reduced and the tank trees are soon to get an overhaul which will make leveling a little easier and hopefully balance out some of the issues.

All in all it's a good fun game, simple in the fact that you can either play it in first person (sniper mode) or third person. The graphics are good, the combat can be compelling when you learn how to drive and keep your tanks out of arty fire.

There is nothing more satisfying than being in a small tank, surviving the battle with you and two other people, killing them both for the game win.

Each country has there own unique strengths and weakness's and it's well worth experimenting in each countries tree.

Overal for a Free game, I would say play it. PVP goodness with Tanks and Canons.

A nice review. I've heard this game mentioned before.

It would be really helpful if you gave some screenshots, or actaually described how the game works. Is it an RTS, a vehicle shooter, a numbers game, what can you actually do?

Sure, the game is a vehicle shooter in either third person or first person perspective.

I can't copy up the images from there site, but http://www.worldoftanks.com/index.html is there home page where further information can be got.

Basically two teams of 15, randomly selected and within a tier level setup, you go around shooting the opposition until you survive and or die.

Double XP for the first win of the day your on per tank

I downloaded and played this game one evening. Uninstalled it the next day. It's extremely anti-new-player-friendly. You start with a PoS tank and the only way to get better is to score by capturing objectives and killing other players... but that is virtually impossible to do as you will be one-shotted within 5 seconds of rolling out from the starting point. Your only chance at not having a rough several weeks in the start is to drop some $$$$ so you can start with something decent and have a fighting chance to learn how to play the game.
