Worth buying Oblivion?

I've heard bad things about the game, but mostly it focussed on how enemies levelled up with you. Now, that kind of appeals to me. Are there any other drawbacks to the game that make it not worth the purchase? Should I have gotten it a long time ago? Would I get seriously addicted? (This is a genuine concern - I once spent a week off work desperately attempting to 100% complete BG2, although I got away with it and it was only menial temp work).

In other words, if you feel like it, talk about Oblivion to me. Please? :)

It's bad. Real bad.

Try Morrowind, better game and with graphics mods looks better.

To be more specific, it's horrendously buggy and mods only make that worse (and without mods it's really bad) AI is monumentally bad, voice acting is truly awful and everyone has the same 10 voice actors. Leveling system is broken, enviromets are balnd and empty, the dungeons were created using a random level generator and they look it. Psychic guards, boring quest design unbalanced skill system. The main plot is as trite as they come and you aren't even the main character.

Ha! That's quite a definite response.

Lol. Well, at least my hopes aren't too high for it if I do decide to get it. :D

Stay away from it. In their efforts to create a living world, Bethesda in fact created one that seems so very lifeless and artificial. The voice acting is mostly pretty bad, and the story is nothing to fuss over.

Get Morrowind.

Oblivion is an amazing game. I preferred it to Morrowind because of the character interactions, the available armor types, weapon types, and the general atmosphere and scenery of Oblivion is far superior to Morrowind. Oblivion is definitely worth a buy, I have spent an exuberant amount of time playing Oblivion. Even after you are done with everything the music and the wildlife can give you a couple hours of entertainment.

That being said, Morrowind isn't bad either. Just not as good as its predecessor.

I liked it a lot. And yes, I would say Oblivion is the kind of game that, if you actually like it, you are in danger of getting addicted to (don't take my word for it though, I even have trouble trusting myself).

Considering you can buy the GOTY edition for almost nothing, why wouldn't you get Oblivion? It's decent enough to warrant a playthrough, I find Morrowind and Fallout to be better, but it's still a solid game.

Lols. Quite a consensus then!

...must have game...fill free time. I'll give Morrowind a look, going off some of these recommendations then. Ta.

EDIT: Woah! The fightback begins. Maybe it is worth a look. Nice to have two sides of the story and not a single flame on either side so far.

Oh and broken pointless tedious minigames for some skills.

Just avoid it at all costs.

You're going to find very extreme opinions of Oblivion. You either burn the box and use all four disks as coasters, or begin worship of the Eight and One.

I found it pretty damn good, but the levelling system started to bite my ass. Nothing a mod can't fix though.

Get morrowind instead.
Autoleveling is a major complaint; for the others, I hate to say this, but...
See Yahtzee.
His Oblivion review is probably the ZP I agree with the most.

Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all time. I was able to sink hours into that game doing nothing but wandering through the endless countryside. I know a lot of people would never consider this to be fun, but that's almost the perfect gaming experience to me. I like to explore, so being able to go virtually anywhere in a massive open world was an incredible experience to me. If you like the freedom of exploration in video games, then you should definitely get Oblivion.

Oblivion is a damn good game. It might not be as good as Morrowind out of the box, but with mods its a lot better. The Morrowind modding community did some good stuff in its time, and some stuff they still do. However, the Oblivion community creates better stuff due to the better Construction Set and scripts and is still very active.

I found it quite good time killer, but I agree with everyone its very lifeless, Morrowind is much better. If you do decide to get morrowind, word of advice, pick ONE weapon skill and stick to it.

[Edit]
You could get both considering they are both pretty old. You can get them pretty god damn cheap, I bought Morrowind GOTY a few years back for £9 im not sure about Oblivion, but chances are you can find it cheap.

What about me?

I consider it a big "meh".

Sure, I'd suggest buying it, it's good to kill an afternoon or two, and it's quite cheap now, but don't go in expecting great things.

both morrowind and oblivion are good games however i would suggest trying oblivion first due to the fact its probably easier to get into.

also a plus for both is that when you "complete either game the modding communities on either game will give you countless hours of fun (wow that expression sounded perfectly gay).

atm im playing with francescos unlvled creatures mod that makes it more challenging generally and also a shit load more. on top of that you can practically find a mod for anything e.g.

archane archery
whole new cities (try bartholm for the lols the voice acting is fucking hilarious because of how bad it is)
hell if you are perverted enough you could try estrus (dont say i didnt warn you if you watch this mod)
oh and to quote something awesome said in the modding community

"you have the massive modding capabilities to create anything in oblivion like mountable dragons or awesome weapons and armor or amazing quests but you decided to make the boobs jiggle more"
