Would a democracy based MMORPG work?

I've recently had (what I think)is an interesting idea for an open world MMO/social experiment into the nature of democracy. My idea is an open world MMORPG with much less quest orientated gameplay. Experience points, levels and loot would still exist in their current iterations. The genre doesn't really matter but medieval fantasy seems to be the most likely for this kind of thing. The interesting part is that once a particularly dedicated player reaches a certain level and money level they achieve a king or god level status and gain a much more comprehensive control over the game. They would gain the power to force taxes upon other players, gift themselves and others with fantastic loot and organise councils and individual rulers to preside over guilds and organisations.

This is not however an eternal gift, nor is it one that requires no work. All players beyond a certain level (and therefore level of investment to prevent trolling) are given the option to vote to oust the current ruler. Once the vote count reaches more than 50% of the eligible voting players the ruler is ousted -BUT- this initiates a hard reset of the game. Everything is lost but achievements and stats (stats such as creatures killed etc. Any character stats to do with leveling and skills are lost). None of the previous loot, none of the money, none of the prestige. The question is this: are people content to work under oppression to gain security or is the idea that next time they could be king too much motivation to allow the current rule to carry on? Would there ever be a long term and benevolent king that wouldn't be ousted? Its just an idea but i thought this was the most sensible place to discuss it.

No it wouldnt work. And it would be a straight hardcore gamers game, with zero appeal to a casual gamer either.

Guilds would for alliances to make sure they were on top. And the "democracy" game would quickly turn into a "corrupted Communist" game as well. Forcing taxes on others would also be the greatest from of griefing ever known.

But then you also use term like King or God in your synopsis, but this is in direct conflict with democracy, something the game is suppose to be about.

Then what happens if everyone wants to play the race in power, thus leaving any other "race or nation" to basically NEVER be able to have a say.

Not to mention your idea of resetting everything would just piss everyone off. And it would most likely be the main form of Mass Griefing ever seen. This is a mechanic that would also totally destroy your casual MMO playerbase. And even the most hardcore MMO player would be sick and tired of it after the 3rd or 4th time.

hmm...... to assume that it would only appeal to hardcore gamers makes the assumption that everyone would want the position of power. Do you not think that perhaps some people would not be happy to play the game as the lower echelons?

I was more thinking of the democracy as the power to choose not to have the ruler. The Hard reset counter measure is put in place to counter the chances of people griefing (hence why only people of certain level can vote, It means that there has to be a thought process in the voting system. Is it worth losing the things you've worked for to overthrow a corrupt dictator.

Also when you say about the ruler being the ultimate griefer - that's why they can be ousted. They would have to benefit people other than themselves to survive.

There would be no "race in power". The person rules as an individual not a group. If they chose only to benefit one people then the others would revolt.

Thanks for the input tho. I really like to have these kinds of conversations. Do you think the idea is a complete write off? or in your mind does it have any merits?

I'm not 100% sure on this but isn't that what Tera Online is trying to do? Having guilds be forms of government in the actual game, with some rising to power and what not. Like I said this is mostly half remembered knowledge on my part but I think Tera is doing something along the lines of what you're thinking.

Seriously citzens?
Paying taxes is your favorite kind of thing that should be incorporated into a MMO?

Note to self:
Maybe my world domination plan isn't that hard to achieve after all.

Perhaps I'm thinking of it on too grand a scale and more of an experiment rather than an enjoyable experience. I just thought it could be interesting to have a player be able to dictate much of the parameters of the world whilst still giving the others an element of control over it. The reset world idea was the only way I could really think of challenging the players to truly think about whether the decision is one being made only for them or for the good of the entire community, otherwise every time there was a vote it would inevitably be for individual power struggles. I also thought this might allow for people to be very politique, helping another rise to power with the potential for betreyal. Anyone got any specific idea improvements?
