Lets just say I have a "Weird taste" in RPG'S I have enjoyed some RPG'S but got bored or tired of others Example I like Kingdom Hearts, Dragon age, Dark souls and Witcher and others however I dislike Final Fantasy and Torchlight (I can only play them for really short periods and get bored).

My question is to Persona fans is that would I enjoy playing Persona 4? I have never heard of it until a few years ago I don't own a vita (Saving for a Wii U) do you think I would like the game, story etc I just want the fan bases opinion on the game before I pay for something I may or may not like?

P.S. If anyone knows how to get Persona without getting a vita that would be helpful thanks.

Well, Persona 4 is also on the PS2, and I believe recently got released on the PSN for the PS3 (though I'm unsure if that's available in the UK yet; Atlus doesn't like localizing for Europe, for some reason). Same situation with Persona 3, which had a PSP remake available on the PSP and Vita but was originally released on the PS2 and has a PSN release for the PS3. The previous Persona games are of varying availability, as the second game was technically released as two separate games and I believe only one part is currently available on the PSN outside of Japan, but Persona 3 made some pretty big changes to the mechanics of the series.

Whether you would like them or not is... a more difficult question to answer?

I'd say the Shin Megami Tensei franchise as a whole is one of the more unique ones I've ever played, and Persona is no exception. 3 and 4 are basically combinations of visual novels with dungeon crawlers and turn-based combat. And monster-raising. Sort of. It's complicated.

Dialogue proceeds in a very VN-esque manner, with you occasionally choosing how to respond to questions or situations and your responses will impact your social stats. Then, without spoiling too much, the meat of the combat is very much old-school dungeon crawling, and that's going to be hit-or-miss. Some of the areas aren't too visually interesting, so it can get a bit wearying to keep going on and that's when you kind of have to fall back on the story to see if you're willing to continue on or not, and, well, your mileage will vary. Boiled down to its simplest, Persona 4's story is about a bunch of high school students trying to solve a murder mystery. Personally, I found it very compelling and most of the characters were highly enjoyable, and I ended my first play-through with a total playtime of something around 70 hours, which is far more than can be said for many games I play these days. But my best friend didn't really care for the school-time theme of the game, so it didn't keep him going on past the third dungeon or so.

I'd say it's worth checking out, as someone who went into Persona 4 Golden without knowing anything about the franchise or sub-series whatsoever and came out with it tied for the position of my favorite JRPG I've played, but I've also found that I tend to have a much more open mind than many, many, many, many, many other people when it comes to trying new things.

Well the original, non upgraded version of the game was on the PS2. If you can play that system's games, then you're golden (I am not sorry about that pun in any way.)

What about Final Fantasy did you dislike, and what final fantasies did you play?
What aspects of JRPGs do you find the most important for enjoyment, and what do you despise about the RPGs that you hate?
I played 13 first I only got about halfway through it before I got bored I didn't enjoy the story and the change class in the middle of battle I found confusing I don't hate turn based combat I just like it to be simple and not have it overly complicated. I then later tried 7 the "Best" game in the franchise after about 10 hours I got bored and have not touched it since its probably because I got confused by the materia system and the fact the story had no weight since everyone on the internet and their dog spoiled the story for me. Its not that I hate old games I played Chrono Trigger and had a blast playing it.

I have liked games like Ni No kuni for some reason I don't know how to explain it I liked the fact that the combat was simple to learn and was not very complicated and the story did not have to make me talk to everyone and look at every book just to get it.

Really really depends on your reasoning for not liking Final Fantasy. Also, what are reasons that you like Dragon Age, Dark Souls, or Kingdom Hearts? Persona 4 will give you a pretty good story(I prefer 3's story personally, but that's just me), great characters, a relatively good high school sim, and pretty good JRPG style combat. Not the best MegaTen game for combat, but still good. You'll have plenty to do in the game, and it's just a good fun game. I sunk 45 or so hours into it in the first week I got it, and the only reason I did it that quickly was because I was playing on very easy(don't hate me, I just wanted to date people). I'd say if you have any interest in a Vita besides this game, go for the Vita version. If that's not in the cards, the PS2 version is still top notch.

Given the games you listed that you like, and those that you don't... I'd say that it's 50/50 on whether you will like it or not. The story and characters in Persona 4 are a bit of a mixed-bag to me. All of the characters are very well-developed and play off of each other well, and you really do end up caring about each of them by the end. However, there are definitely a few that I, personally, found to be annoying and just unlikable, but your mileage may vary. The story is a pretty standard murder-mystery, and odds are you'll either quickly figure out who the killer is and wonder what's taking the gang so long, or you'll figure it out at the same time they do. It's a solid mystery, regardless, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. The real meat of the story is watching the characters interact with one another and mature as both people and a team, and as I implied earlier, they do a great job with that.

As for the combat, it's all turn-based and, barring mini-bosses and bosses, fights will be over in a matter of three or four turns (and trust me, you want them to if you intend to make serious progress in any dungeon), although with that said you can also die just as quickly as the enemies if you're unprepared. The dungeons are all themed in pretty non-standard ways (no fire, water, etc. dungeons) with a few standouts, but if you intend to do all of the sidequests in the game you will see the same ones a lot. That can make the grind a bit monotonous, but it's largely optional, and if you ever want a break from it then there are a lot of other sidequests you can do throughout the game. You'll always have something to do, which means you're always progressing in some way.

The pacing is...ehhh, it's okay. Every month or so an event will happen and you need to complete it before a certain day. You're free to complete it the day it happens or at the last second, but if you do it early, then the story grinds to a halt until the day after the deadline. What this amounts to is that you'll find yourself doing myriad other tasks to pass the time between story beats, but because you would often end up doing them anyway it's not as bad as it sounds.

Sorry for being a bit long-winded, but I figured being thorough would best, heh. TL;DR, Great character development and interactions, although some characters are hit-or-miss. The story is solid and should keep your attention. Combat is fast and turn-based, strategic, but can become a touch monotonous. The pacing is stop-and-go, but there's always something to do during the lulls in the 60-70 hour story.
