Would the Portal gun work in MP shooters?

I just beat Portal again and I was thinking about what it would be like if you could use the Portal gun in multiplayer shooter games. It seems to me like it would be a pretty cool extra mechanic, but there might also be some problems. For instance, it might be virtually impossible to catch the last player of the opposing team if he can just teleport everywhere virtually instantly. And camping might become really easy, because once people know where you are, you can easily get the hell out of there.

So what do you think? Would it be nice to have the Portal gun in other shooters (or a deathmatch multiplayer component in Portal with other guns as well)? What rules/mechanics would be needed to make it work? What could make it even more awesome?

Discuss!

It would probably just make it a bit ridiculous. The maps would have to be VERY well designed otherwise there will be an innumerable amount of exploits and the like.

Well, portals can only be made on flat surfaces, right? So, keeping that in mind, I'm sure some sort of balanced map could be made around it.

It'd be super fun, but only if I was the only one with a portal gun. Or if there was only one gun on the field at a time.

Capture the flag would be too easy, and the only way to kill someone would be to make them wear a very flat white tile like object around their neck.

For a game designed for it hell yes. Even a game not designed for it a Mod would be awesome to see what happens with one in a regular game.

Dont feel like looking for it now, but ive seen people play a MOD in shooters with the portal gun. Probably glitchy as hell, but it worked in the video.

I think ive seen it in half life single player, too. Pretty funny, just shoot a portal behind them and unload....

I agree, there should be only one portal gun on the map. Imagine a 16 player deathmatch where EVERYONE had a portal gun... insane.

They could do like Unreal and just make the flag auto-drop on teleport. So while you can just port there, you'll still need to hoof it back.

no you could put it on the side of a very very big clif and put the other portal under the enemy so they fall a really really long way

it could lead to an interesting dynamic... instead of shooting at your enemy across a field, throw up a portal right under their feet, have them fall and teleport behind your lines so your team can melee em to death.

Yes I think with as open and free shooters typically are theres no reason not to try it out for chits and giggles. Besides, Shooters could use all the "innovation" they can get their hands on with how stagnant the gameplay in shooters has so rapidly became

Good luck finding very flat white floors. It'd seem only useful in the practise levels of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, which would be interesting with portals...

They did it already for TF2. Never got to playing, but let me find the video.

EDIT:

EDIT THE SECOND: Just saw it hasn't been released yet. Shame, this looks hella fun, I'm for it.

hell i would check it out....it can probably be something that some mod-maker could come up with who's talented enough.

cap the flag wouldn't work though....and the more people there is will make distinguishing YOUR portals from everyone else is going to be a *****

This one? Edit: yeah, this one, I see you edited your post now. :)

Yeah, it looks like they got it to work, so that's nice. I wonder how well it works in game though (not in terms of glitches, but gameplay).

Some people mentioned that the portals only work on flat surfaces. Of course, that's the case in Portal, but for me, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. I can imagine that in some games (especially games that are largely outside and otherwise realistic), that is not a restraint that you would want.
When I started the topic, I didn't so much want to talk about the portal gun from Portal, but about a gun that shoots portals, like in Portal. There can be modifications if you think they'd be fun. Perhaps I should have been more clear.

Maybe giving everyone an infinite "ammo" portal gun would be too chaotic. But maybe rationing the amount of portals everyone could make, might solve that.
I also think it would be awesome if you could (sometimes) make your portals invisible, so that they would work better as traps for your opponents.

Competitively? Very hard to make such a thing impractical.

Cooperatively? I could see that happening, i.e. Portal 4 Dead.

There actually was a game in development at one point that used a portal-gun type weapon in multiplayer. The name escapes me

If you watched the Portal speedrun, you'd know that some portal-twitchers can get insanely good. For that reason, there would be a massive skill gap between players. I'd be against it.
