So the game didn?t live up to the hype(to put it mildly) mainly due to false advertising on Ubisoft?s part. Graphics were significantly downgraded and in essence this is just another GTA-clone. But now the smoke has settled there is no denying this game also did a lot of things right, something it might have gotten more credit for if the game wasn?t so full of overblown expectations. However, I still find myself returning to it again and again.

Chicago might not look entirely like Chicago(never been there so can?t personally decide) but it certainly does look like any other fairly prosperous western city. There is not really any interaction with random NPCs but the simple mechanic of you being able to spy for a tidbit of random(and often naughty) info on their phone gives these faceless drones a personality they wouldn?t otherwise have. Simple mechanic but one that's surprisingly effective.

The action is also really good, and probably my favorite part of the game. I absolutely loved Splinter Cell Blacklist and they basically transplanted the gameplay systems of this game wholesale. It just works really well in an open-world crime game. Watch Dogs simply has the best stealth of any open world game and going in and out of cover taking down enemies is a blast. There is a wide variety of weapons as well. It?s all really detailed which also makes it even better.

Speaking of detail this game is incredibly well made in terms of in-game assets. Almost everything seems custom made with no easy cut&pasting. On a game of this scale that is quite a feat(and a costly/time intensive one). Sure, graphics aren?t up to par with the E3 demo but the fallout of this debacle kind of unfairly discredits the immense detail that went into making this game. I have the impression they downscaled the graphics to increase performance b/c what they aimed for was too ambitious and self-contained(something more pre-release press demos suffer from).

Next is the setting which I think is also incredibly awesome. A ?connected? city controlled by a questionable corporation that heavily infringes on privacy issues with politicians in their pocket doesn?t sound that far-fetched, and the way it?s presented in Watch Dogs makes it play out like some near-future cyperpunk tale. Espescially with the population of Chicago being glued to their phones 24/7 which also isn?t really far-fetched. :p

Now ofcourse the game isn?t in any way perfect(even ignoring all the preceding hype). The character drama feels forced and although I didn?t really care about Aiden being considered a ?bland? character; it just didn?t really add anything to the game other than some contextual filler to tie the missions together. However with a setting this cool and intriguing there was no need for a story like this anyway, and I?d rather they kept it out altogether and focused the plot solely on ctOS and their hacker adversaries Dedsec. Gameplay wise the driving was serviceable but nowhere near as good as in say GTA5 or Sleeping Dogs. The missions were prone to repetition, but this was somewhat mitigated by the non-linearity with which you could approach objectives,

Watch Dogs is probably my favorite Ubisoft title in years. You can see in parts of the game that the developers didn?t really have prior experience developing a game like this with ideas that don?t necessarily all coalesce that well, but at the same time bring a novelty to the experience new iterations of GTA are starting to lack. It?s definitely a little rough around the edges and lacks a clear focus that gives the game a kind of ?jack of all trades, master of none? feel. However it also does a lot of things right that(atleast in my experience) makes the game consistently fun to play.

There is no doubt there will be a Watch Dogs 2 and I hope that with the experience of this game that will be what they promised to us at E3 2012. :p So, any of you still interested in this IP or did the original game destroyed all your hopes and dreams? :p

Depends, to me the first one felt like shit but so did Assassins Creed 1 in a certain way and they redeemed with 2. If they can pull it off again I will be interested.

Ubisoft has fucked up a lot recently trying to shove around 5 big releases in a year (The Crew, Watch Dogs, 2 Assassins Creed games, Far Cry 4, and then there are all the other lesser titles), they really need to slow down and take their time.

If its good then its good, to me the first wasnt and I wont take that much into consideration when forming my opinion about the sequel, a lot of games had a first bad game and a good second one and vice-versa.

Nope.

I knew it was going to be mediocre as soon as Aiden opened his big bland mouth in that first E3 preview.

And lo and behold, I was proven right. As always.

There was a half decent shooter hidden in there somewhere, but the world of gaming isn't exactly hurting for half decent shooters at the moment.

Well, yeah. It's not a bad game to me, not even mediocre. I didn't know about all the hype about this game before I played it, so the only thing I was annoyed about was the performance issues. I didn't finish the game, but I wouldn't mind playing a sequel if they ever make one.

No.

I'm not buying another Ubisoft game until they stop putting in mouse acceleration that can't be disabled. That combined with a save corrupting bug was what pushed me to uninstall Watch Dogs, never to play it again.

That and their endless pre-orders and special editions.

Make one edition, price it fairly, sell it to everyone - End of.

And scrap that garbage Uplay service while you're at it.

I'm not really looking forward to anything coming from Ubisoft anymore unless it's a small budget passion project.

Everything else coming from them seems sooo generic these days. There is no visual flair to it it's all grey photo realism that just makes every game seem to blend together.

Hey, remember how Ubisoft made that mediocre at best Assassins Creed, and then when the criticisms about it came out they gave us Assassins Creed II which is an improvement in every single way?
Isn't Watch Dogs basically the exact same thing as that?
Yes, I would be tentatively excited in getting a Watch Dogs 2.

The only Ubisoft games I'll be buying in the near future are a new Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil 2. Whether either of those are actually in the works I don't know, but apart from that I'm really kinda done with Ubi.

Meh, I'd wait and see. I didn't hate Watch_Dogs, but it didn't really impress me either. If they can deliver a more interesting story with better characters and make the contract missions more exciting I'd be ok with a sequel.

We also need more Spidertank.

I could not care less about it. I was actually happy that I didn't buy into the hype for the first one. I love being right. It's like getting high.

Personally I preferred the original Assassins Creed game to the sequels. A sequel to watch dogs could potentially be good, but I'm not really a fan of open world games so it probably wouldn't appeal to me.

No, but to be honest it's because I'm currently boycotting Ubisoft; mostly due to false advertising, u-play, bad pc ports, stupid statements about piracy, and the creative murder and zombification of assassin's creed. I tried to give them a break a couple of days ago with the Trials Fusion demo on steam, and the damn thing installed u-play without warning me ahead of time (and I did check the system requirements and forum to see if they mentioned it). It took a ridiculously long time to start once installed and I'm still not sure I cleared out all the crap it put in during installation. And that was for a demo.

What I saw of Watch Dogs looked boring, and if they managed to make it better like they did with ACII I might consider giving it a chance; assuming of course I could just use steam and not have u-play get tied to it. Call me petty if you must, but considering my installation of Far Cry 3 broke so hard (through no fault of my own) I had to uninstall uplay I'm not in any rush to go back.

No; Ubisoft as of late has been showing gross incompetence and doing nothing to try and fix things. I don't trust them to learn from their mistakes with Watch Dogs

I would be cautiously optimistic.

I really enjoyed the combat, using hacking to find a useful camera angle, cause the guards to move to a specific location and then execute a trap. It added a nice tactical planning element.

The story and characters could have been better, but I've also seen worse. I'm not obsessed with shiny graphics and I didn't watching any of the pre-release trailers, so I didn't have a problem from that point of view.

The main negative that I can think of is what we've come to know as "Ubisoft: The Game". Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, The Crew ... they're all the same now. I loved Far Cry 3 but when I played Far Cry 4, I was kinda bored. No doubting its a good game, but I just felt like I'd done it a dozen times already.

They need to drop the "climb the tower to add all the stuff to the map" mechanic. They need to stop with the 15 types of repetitive side missions - I'd prefer less side quests that have more variety, take longer to complete, and actually have some impact on the world.

And they need to take a step back from all the pre order exclusives, microtransactions and season pass stuff. Don't make me feel like I'm only getting 70% of the game.

I would not like a Watch Dogs sequel, but I would like a sequel to Bad Blood (its DLC).

Watch Dogs has two serious problems:
-Aiden Pierce is a horrible protagonist. His motivation makes little sense and he comes across as a jerk who willingly endangers his family. Even the revenge plot seems to be forgotten during the game and he ends up just doing things for the heck of it.
-The driving was HORRIBLE.

Both were fixed by Bad Blood. T-Bone's motivation makes sense, they removed the annoying driving, and as a bonus T-Bone actually is a badass and a hacker.

No, I couldn't possibly look forward to a second one when the first one didn't even feel finished. Cars don't get damaged or have any weight to them (except for the ones that crash in intersections when you mess with the lights,) the information about people meant nothing and had nothing to do with the game, there's nothing to do besides hacking, they simplified the hacking abilities to the point where they were simply boring and worst of all, you can't even climb back down ladders! That's just a few little things but they definitely contribute to the game.

I would heck I liked the game. Then again I liked Adian to for some strange reason. I seem to like protagonist people hate. I hate protagonist people love like Danta from DMC.

Look forward to? No not really. Be interested in. Yeah I think so

Watch dogs was a good game when taken on its own merits. It wasnt amazing, great, genre-defining, or anything like that. Just good. However it represented a lot of bad consumer practices so that brings the game down which is unfair IMO. People far to often attack a game instead of attacking the underlying issues surrounding said game.

Taken on its own merits watch dogs had decent driving, decent 3rd person shooting, good weapon selection, pretty good stealth without needing to rely on a see through walls power, and a somewhat disjointed story that had lots of good bits and quite a few odd bits thrown in. Perhaps the part I like most was the invasion system which I felt had a good medium between the two extremes.

However I was disappointed by the setting in the sense that crime hadnt really evolved at all. We got the same old stuff with drug trafficking, blackmail, human traficking, etc. They could have redefined crime with just a little bit of creativity.

The ended set up a sequel pretty well though. IMO they should have Aiden be the head of an international organization of hackers that deal with future criminal syndicates. Let deadsec become cyber terrorists (and actual terrorists) while continuing with organized crime and corrupt politicians playing a major role.

Ubisofts released a lot of good games over the last few years (far cry 3, far cry: Blood dragon, valiant hearts) so they could pull off a good one again as long as they dont get blinded by the usual executive nonsense and PR lead blindness
