Would you play a game for the storyline?

So, you just got a new RPG and you play it for an hour or so, and decide you hate the battle system, but the storyline interests you. Would you keep going?

I like stories, but then that is why You Tube is around isn't it? so i guess I won't play it I would just watch or read it, and then I would hate myself for paying for a game I did not have fun playing!!! So I guess I would not play unless its some fun for me @@

The only example i can think of is FFXII, it was the battle system that eventually bored me to death and lead me to give up playing a FF for the first time since i started collecting them.

That said the story wasn't exactly stunning but i guess my answer is no

I'd give it another hour that day see where the story goes.

Pick it up the next day and see how I find the controls that day and where the story goes (as a general rule I get used to controls after a nice sleep).

It does sound like FF12, but unfortunately the story stayed boring all the way through too.

Yes, the story for me actually comes before the gameplay. I just really enjoy playing RPG's.

Play it for a bit, see if you warm up to it. Otherwise, get as far as you can stand it. Best of luck.

Oh god the AI in NWN2 is horrendous. But for the sake of the question just figure it's bad and it will just annoy you every so often, the whole time you play.

Depends how boring I found it. If it was mildly boring and I would give it a chance to redeem itself, but if it was completely mind numbing then I'd treat it to a reheat cycle in the microwave (or just not play it, whichever is easier)

That depends on how much I hate it and how good the story is. If the battle system is truly atrocious, then I'll probably give up on it no matter how intriguing the story is.
Neverwinter Nights 2 actually wasn't bad, at least I didn't think so. Your AI allies tended to be rather thick, but then in what game aren't they rather thick? The ending did kinda suck though, but you'll get no spoilers from me.
If you're having second thoughts about the original Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign, then you'll defiantly hate the Mask of the Betrayer expansion. I couldn't even finish that.

for me by the way this game is Neverwinter Nights 2. I ended up choosing to play it for the story.
The controls were awful for NWN2 on its original release. Since then updates have been released which fix it, if you're prepared to spend a while updating (there are a lot of patches).

OT: I'm not sure I would. I've heard good things about the stories of both NWN2 and Jade Empire, but I'm not a fan of the controls/combat, and have yet to get very far in either.

My answer varies based on just how much I like the story and just how terrible the controls are. I'd be willing to put up with a fairly abysmal game for the sake of a story on par with The Watchmen, but thus far no game has even come close to that particular benchmark.

To put it in perspective, though many people adore the story in the FF series, I am absolutely unable to tolerate the gameplay for the sake of story. Or, as another example, I so dislike the game mechanics present in any MGS game that I have never actually sat through an entire game. Both games are beloved by their fans for the stories (yes, even MGS), and I'm willing to recognize that quality is present, it just isn't the sort of game I want to play.

As a very general rule, I place gameplay above storytelling, and this is likely due to the fact that even a very good game story is often fairly weak compared to other media.

Controls are the most important aspect of video games. Bad controls and I wron't play it. People say fable is a classic, but I did not play it past two hours because the controls sucked. Every time I moved or pressed a button, the entire interface appeared to change.

This is a weird question. It all depends how awful the system is and just how interesting the story is. Either way my answer is no. I read books for stories. I play games for shooting and fun.
