Ok, so i woke up this morning and "Deep Impact" is on. Now for those of you that haven't seen this movie, (SPOILER ALERT) 2 meteors are headed toward the earth. One actually strikes it causing a tidal wave that destroys the entire US Eastern Seaboard. A team of astronauts armed with nuclear weapons flies their shuttle directly into the path of the meteor destroying it. Now with that being said, do you think that you could give your life if it meant saving the entire planet? What if you died but the mission didn't succeed?

If I didn't sacrifice my life for the planet, then we would all die. If I did, then I would die, and there was a chance that everyone else would be alive. Better outcome if I sacrificed myself, and I would die either way.

Are you quoting that from somewhere, or did you just decide to be awesome today?
If you really don't know where that quote came from, be ashamed. Here's a clue:

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I'm pretty sure that one was Rorschach. Been a little while since I read the graphic novel and I haven't seen the movie yet so I dunno for sure.

Yes, I would sacrifice myself. If the mission failed I'd come back pissed off as hell. I'd also might kill one or two people right before going. A certain blond bimbo polemicist comes to mind. Gotta have someone to torture in the next life.

Pragmatically speaking, if you let it hit there wouldn't be much to come back to.

However, I would do it anyway even if I would otherwise survive. The ultimate sacrifice is noble. It would be terrifying but the decision is simple, you would do it.

If it didn't work, well, you still did your best to save as many as possible and noone can begrudge you for that.

I'd like to say that the idea is a bit preposterous; you can't just blow up a meteor because you have to take account of where the pieces go. In the film they burn up in the atmosphere and all is fine. NO ALL IS NOT FINE! The increase in temperature would be unbareable killing so many people.

Also, the tsunami created by the first impact is understated. A whole ripple of tsunamis would occur afterwards as the water fell back into the impact hole sploshed up and then back down and that would go on for a long time.

It's not that simple, you would have to be sure that you could vapourise all of the pieces.

I'd die for those I care about, easily. The other few billion people are alright too.

I'm too much of a misanthropist to try saving everybody. I'd rather do it for someone I cared about.

Would that happen to mean: "Who watches the watchmen?"?

As for world saving, can't someone else do it?
Yes, and I was referring to the Watchmen comics.
