Im a little confused with the level of vehemence some achieve when posting about their dislike of WoW. For the type of game it is wanting to be, its almost a perfect game, and i mean that as detached and objective as possible. I realize its not everyones cup of tea and thats cool, different strokes for different folks (my favorite ar hemorrhagic), but when people get so...upset it seems like they object to WoW by principle, the same sort of reaction when people debate about philosophy or religion. My question, why? I suppose post what you like or dont like about the game mechanics and story itself, but if you you HATE it, post why. I mean post why and how dislike for something turned into passionate hate.

World of Warcraft is popular. People believe it to be "acceptable" to hate on popular things. People then state their displeasure with the game, even if they don't really feel that strongly about it just so that they can be "accepted".

That, or they don't like how it can destroy people's social lives.

Or they genuinely do hate it.

Or there is just a vocal minority that you are hearing from.

One, or many, of those.

It's not the game in and of itself that I dislike, but the people that just don't stop talking about/playing it. I've known plenty of people who let their lives crash and burn simply because they felt that the game was so important.

Like I've said about a great many other "addictions" for lack of a better term (and indeed, there are some people legitimately addicted) the chances are that they met the prerequisites for an addictive personality, and would have been addicted to something else in its place.

I'm not against alcohol because some people are alcoholics, but I've seen that sometimes it can have negative effects. I think that sums up my feelings towards it nicely.

I hate MMOs not just WoW. If people want to waste their time doing the same thing over and over again... Thats their business. Now multi-player-shooters are fun because there actually is some gameplay (aka fun). I find MMOs really really boring. All it is is repetition. It reminds me of farmville, do this... Now do it again, 7 billion times (sorry, I know it hurts to hear a game being compared to that piece of shit by Zynga). Oh and they fucked the name of the RTS, which I really enjoy.

"Hey, wanna play Warcraft?"
"Sure. I got my character to level sixty yesterday."
... "NO NOT THAT ONE YOU DICKHEAD!"... "I'm gonna go kill myself now."

I neither love nor hate it. I just don't care about it.

I played causally about a year back when my friends managed to make me shell out a hundred dollars or so just to play. Needless to say, I was only around for at least a month or two before I became completely bored with it and gave my account away.

The game is alright, but it really doesn't appeal to me because of the time consumed by playing it and the amount of money needed to sustain the account. To me, fifteen dollars every month could buy me an actually enjoyable game every couple of months. Because of this, I don't wish to be strapped down by some ball and chain of a game.

It's not that the game is terrible, it just has too many responsibilities tagged along with it to the point where it seems like a chore for me.

Basically this. Given that it has roughly 12 million subscribers despite being almost 6-1/2 years old definitely proves that it is popular and fun to a lot of different people; I should know, I'm one of them. However, with any amount of popularity comes an equally spiteful community that just loathes it just due to its popularity compared to similar games they like, much like the Halo fandom/hater relationship.

Then you have those that haven't played it, but hate it on just because it's not their type of game. That's not a big deal, but they should at least take the middle ground on judging it until they've at least tried it a bit.

Finally, there's the "it'll cost you your soul", or any such variation, claims; from what I've seen, this is by far the largest reason I've ever heard hate on the game. Yes, some people have become addicted to the game, but that's mostly because these people have addictive personalities in the first place, and to be fair, if this did affect a majority of its players, we would have definitely heard something about it by now. In fact, one of my friends here at college who used to play said he was playing it too much before he quit, but then ended up playing Halo games more hours a week than he ever did for WoW, and even he admits it. Other than that though, I haven't really noticed anyone else that I know (including myself) that completely lose themselves in the game and play for many hours on end, except occasional weekend nights when nothing else is going on.

The only reason I hate WoW is because of its success. Because of it now alot of MMOs are copying the forumla. Also now the chances of getting another Warcraft RTS are slim to none.

I laughed, extremely hard.

What do you do in multiplayer shooters? Well, you shoot the other team. What else?

Yeah, not much is there. Sure, there are a few different variants of gameplay, but seriously, there is a hell of a lot more gameplay options (aka fun, as you so adequately put) in MMOs than there will ever be in any FPS.

i never liked WOW all that much, the idea of having pay a monthly fee just to play a game never appealed to me.

Yes, but wow just doesn't want to end the madness ....electronic stimulation is fun in a while and small does at a time. Chronic WoW is simply unbearably... believe me , i'm a former WoW player.

Thats funny, because I find that the game has no addictive properties whatsoever. Though, I have always had a good sense of moderation in my life.

All that "Chronic WoW" (as you put it) is, is the outcome of people who have little to no sense of moderation playing it.

That being said now, how come people who play WoW are "losers with no life" but people who play through Fallout 3, New Vegas, Oblivion, and Morrowind thirty times over and have logged over three months of play time into the game aren't? Bit of a bias due to it being "cool to hate" isn't it?

I just hate wow because people just won't shut up. You see, for some odd reason, I am ashamed to be a gamer and I try to say little about gaming in public but the people who play wow just seem to ditch the thought of self control and scream out the crap that some boss they killed droppped. I DONT CARE THAT YOU GOT THE "BLADE OF UBER DEATH" JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!

To be fair though, that's not really a hate to WoW, just a dislike to subscription based MMOs in general. However, that kind of thing is desirable depending on how many games a year they buy; going on subscription fees alone, it adds up to about the cost of buying 3 new games, and a lot of people will buy more than that in a years' time. Plus, having that fee means that the developers can continually pay for people to keep track of the state of the servers (otherwise known as game masters) and patch in anything from minor bug fixes to completely new content.

No, when I said "gameplay" I meant the the difference between killing someone in god of war and dispatching a foe in WoW. God of war: rip them to pieces with blades attached to chains. WoW: Stand there and swing at the enemy. There isn't much going on. At least there is a considerable amount of skill required to play CoD or Halo.

Actually, to be honest, I don't really hate WoW. I just prefer to play a game that's actually fun and not a second-time job.

i suppose your right about that, about it being a general dislike of something. but if i'm gonna pay for something on a monthly basis it may well be for huge variety of games so i don't get board. i didn't buy my Xbox just so i Could play halo all the time, that why i have a big variety of them.
