World of Warcraft is popular. People believe it to be "acceptable" to hate on popular things. People then state their displeasure with the game, even if they don't really feel that strongly about it just so that they can be "accepted".
That, or they don't like how it can destroy people's social lives.
Or they genuinely do hate it.
Or there is just a vocal minority that you are hearing from.
One, or many, of those.
Basically this. Given that it has roughly 12 million subscribers despite being almost 6-1/2 years old definitely proves that it is popular and fun to a lot of different people; I should know, I'm one of them. However, with any amount of popularity comes an equally spiteful community that just loathes it just due to its popularity compared to similar games they like, much like the Halo fandom/hater relationship.
Then you have those that haven't played it, but hate it on just because it's not their type of game. That's not a big deal, but they should at least take the middle ground on judging it until they've at least tried it a bit.
Finally, there's the "it'll cost you your soul", or any such variation, claims; from what I've seen, this is by far the largest reason I've ever heard hate on the game. Yes, some people have become addicted to the game, but that's mostly because these people have addictive personalities in the first place, and to be fair, if this did affect a majority of its players, we would have definitely heard something about it by now. In fact, one of my friends here at college who used to play said he was playing it too much before he quit, but then ended up playing Halo games more hours a week than he ever did for WoW, and even he admits it. Other than that though, I haven't really noticed anyone else that I know (including myself) that completely lose themselves in the game and play for many hours on end, except occasional weekend nights when nothing else is going on.
