I was hanging out with a friend last evening and i was watching him play Waorld of Warcraft and he and his guild (Coma - Khadgar EU) downed the almighty Lich King. I dont get how 10 people can down this dude when he can destroy and enslave nations. i know its a game BUT COME ON.

Heroes are exceptional people, especially when you get them in groups. Why wouldn't they be able to take on a very powerful enemy and win?

JRPGs
...what does that have to do with a western MMORPG?

The Lich King was just a man though. Yes, he was strong but at the same time it was his army mostly that did most of the work. Plus, those ten characters that killed the Lich King all had main character syndrome.

It's to decrease the number of people. If you look in Stormwind City for example, there's only about 20 NPC's walking the streets. It's all scaled down. Also, one man will die to 10 men, it wasn't the Lich King who destroyed the nations by himself.

I hope that helps explain better.

Well first of all vs a normal npc yea Lich King kicks butt also he personally didn't enslave every single person he had minions.

Also since the players are supposed to be a cut above the rest highly trained and geared it makes sense that they have a chance at beating him, The Argent Tournament for instance was set up for heroes to spar and prepair to face the Lich King Himself.

You also should remember that the Lich King has also been through a few things that weakened him considerably before you enter the citadel.

Just food for thought.

Besides, even the mighty Szass Tam(A lich in D&D) could, conceivably, be downed by s single combatant.

Yeah, going with what everyone else said, he had an army to do that kinda crap for him?

But it's WoW, you don't question the logic of it.

Considering that he says he was toying with us when we get him to 10%

then

Tirion breaks frostmourn with the ashbringer then his daddy fucks him over

not that stupid.

The thing that makes less sense is that your friend's guild will probably be killing him again next week, not to mention every other enemy in that place that has already died to their hands countless times. And the fact that player characters have minuscule health pools compared to, say, faction leaders, but the leaders refuse to tank for them. And the fact that the mightiest enemies in existence will forego the insta-win strategy of killing the healers and attack the tanks just because they were taunted. Seriously, those warriors must have the wit of Oscar Wilde and the malice of... um... a very malicious person indeed. I'm guessing 'Your mother was a whore' probably wouldn't cut it.

There are many non-sensical things about WoW.

Its been well covered that WoW is effectively a means to play a game, not tell a story so much. If you really want to look into it the combined forces of the Knight of the Ebon Blade and the Ardent Crusade are taking care of the riff-raff so that you can go kill the Lich King and his most powerful underlings.

The Lich King wasn't a god, he was just fucking smart and powerful. He was able to set the wheels in motion to ultimately create an army from a kingdom who he manipulated it's prince to destroy. Also see what smallharmlesskitten said he was quite on the ball.

Plus heroes are not pushovers they:
1. Beat back Ragnaros the Firelord
2. Killed Neltharions son Deathwing
3. Killed the broodmother Onyxia(not once but twice!)
4. Defeated two old gods (C'thun and Yogg-Saron)
5. Defeated the blood god Hakkar
6. Defeated the Lich Kings greatest lieutenant Kel'Thuzad(who takes a lot of credit in Lordron's downfall) twice
7. Defeated Prince Malchazar
8. Defeated Zul'Jin
9. Killed Gruul the Dragonkiller
10. Killed Magtheridon
11. Went back in time and bested Archimonde
12. Defeated Illidan and his leitenants (Lady Vash and Kael'Thas(before and after his demotion!))
13. Beat back Kil'Jaeden from the sunwell.
14. Killed the Aspect of magic, Malygos(he wasn't a pushover)
15. Completed the Trail of the Crusader and defeated Anub'arak(twice)

These guys can likely handle it.

No, not at all, I play and enjoy WoW. I don't care about those little quirks. I was just highlighting the futility of trying to analyse it.

If your friend had properly explained it, the story of the Lich King is that 10 people didn't bring him down. It was a concentrated effort by all of the horde and alliance. Everyone in the raid gets a buff that constitutes that.

Plus, most of Arthas's protections are vulnerable if you can get into his Citadel, which is what all of the pre-Arthas boss fights are about.

I checked the Lich King fight, techinically the players DON'T beat him.He was literally toying with them till 10% health then 1 hit K.O all of them, but some other dude came outta no-where and finished him then rezzed the players.

So it was basically a James Bond scenario,"Why didn't the villain kill him straight away?""Because the villian is stupid/the villian wants a challenge"

What doesn't make sense though is that if the guild wipes, technically all of their souls would go into the dudes sword and they wouldn't ever be able to escape till someone else saves them.Of course making the final boss of a game a possible game over if you lose would defeat the point, especially when the game doesn't end when you kill the boss.(It could work in a single player game where you have to reset the game anyway when you win)
