That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. They could have just taken the item, or the achievements, or even suspended him for a few days. Total ban was a bad way of handling it, unless is was actually Blizzard trying to set an example for others who witness their mistakes.

I'm on this guy's side. If I get an in-game item straight from the Blizz, I'm using it. I'm not returning it, I'm not second-guessing it, I'm using it.

When the boss gives you the keys to the company car, do you say "Thanks, but I don't think I'm privileged to that?" No. You drive the company car.
I second that!
It's totally Blizzards fault. I'm sure anyone would've done exactly the same thing in his situation, I know I would have!

If someone drops a 100 million on your bank account and you don't know why, is it automatically yours to spend?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: You're expected to use your head and think "Hm... did the tooth fairy really give me 100 million quid to play with? Hmmm... probably not". You're expected to use common sense.

This kid... he knew full and well that this item was one he was not supposed to have. Yet he chose deliberately to abuse it, messing up the game. Of course he deserves a big shovel of shit shoved down his chimney for that! And all of his guild mates that understood that something was up but did not alert Blizz on it... they too deserve their 24 hour lockout.

Kids these day and age... they have completely lost that sense of "Yours and Mine"... no respect for other people's property at all. They think that just because it's immaterial, they have full rights. Well guess what: they do not!

They deserve to get smacked around for idiotic stuff like that.

All these money analogies make no sense. If you spend a million dollars that ended up in your bank account rather than its owner's, then you're spending someone else's money. They have worked hard for that cash, you're denying them the enjoyment of using whatever they would have bought with it. This guy did not negatively affect anything. He got some achievements and likely some nice loot and had a few laughs. He benefits, no-one loses out. Sure, Blizzard should have removed the item if only to stop him from using it in PvP, where it would actually impact on someone else's game experience, but permabanning for something that did no-one any harm is just ridiculous.

I would've kept it secret, gaining the best armor for myself in instances where no one else can see me using it.

banning seems a little, you know unfair why not just take the item and remove the achievements, but this rise and fall of power, it seems like something out of a story

Wow... That's messed up. The company screws up and rather than just admit the screw up and take the item back, they ban his account?
This is what happens when Activision gets involved though. I don't play WoW but all my friends that do have said it took a major turn for the worse when Activison bought Blizzard. I guess they were right.

I think this whole thing stinks of stupid decisions, and thats that.

Chances of that "exploit" or Mistake more like in the random item generator being found out were pretty slim.

Thanks to this dude they now know of it.

He was stupid but rightly unsure after being handed this item of it's legitimacy, and blizzard are perfectly within their capability to undo anything gained from it's use. And item given to you by a 'mod' rightly should be legitimate no matter what... it's from the team themselves!

In the spirit of fairness This guy helped them dig out a major design flaw, and all they did at worst with it was take out Flame Leviathan? Bloody hell thats restraint, people would've been egging me on to take out the entire Ulduar raid! Give the idiot back his account.

The mod who didn't overlook the situation in the first place should be the one slapped on the wrist.

EDIT: and before you say "just erase the achievements", I don't believe Blizzard can without rolling back the server, and you know that won't fly. Unless you are a programmer or a db admin you cannot say "it's not that hard" because you have no idea of the work involved. I happen to be a software dev, so even though I don't work on an MMO, I can tell you that, yeah, it probably is that hard...
Actually yes they can, and no it isn't hard in the least. And yes I know this for a fact. Blizzards design for the acheivments are different than most basic MMO functions. On a regular free MMORPG I know how difficult it is to erase things. i.e. MapleStory < played with that alot.

But however much you want to believe that blizzards game is a simple cash in, it's not their systems are very well organized and very user friendly, and the achievements system is the easiest bloody one to operate.

No, here is the item: Martin Thunder

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=192

And to all the Blizz-haters... grow up. Anyone with IQ slightly over room temperature knows that this is an item you're not supposed to have. But what does this guy do? Does he let Blizzard know? "Uhm... guys, I think there has been some mistake here... this thing you gave me, it's like... way too awesome. Am I really supposed to have this?". No, the little bugger deliberately starts using it to his advantage for several days.

So he gets a TOS smackdown for it.

What?

Oooooh, you though the TOS were just for decoration purposes to mess up the login screen after every major update? Guess what... they ain't! You follow them, or you get shafted for it.

And for those that say the banning this was harsh... it's called "discouragement". If Blizz just restored the account with nothing happening, they are basically saying that exploiting is alright if you get away with it. That's not the way it's supposed to be. Break the rules, you get smacked for it... simple as that.

Not picking a side here, just saying that I'd do the exact same thing and more if I were him.

Actually the raiding guilds lost out as he got 2 world firsts.

I can vouch for this, GMs can and do change achievements, cash levels and gear. The world firsts though might be a little bit harder as it would need to be reset to trigger properly across all servers. When 3.1 first came out the "champion of the frozen wastes" title and achievement did not trigger due to a bug in the recognition of the death of Mal'Ganis in CoS, Game Masters during that time were allowed to check the status of the players other achievements for the Heroic CoS completion and then give the Champion title to the player.

If I played WoW and had logged in to find a Blizzard-only item in my bank or inventory or whatever they use in that game, I would have known something was up...obviously
