Recently...lets say about two weeks ago I got into everquest 2 and I loved it, which surprised me as I absolutely hated WoW (I never had a subscription just the free until level 20 thing)I haven't spent a penny on everquest and haven't found that the game is lacking from not having a silver membership. Anyway I digress, my point is why is WoW considered so much better than other MMO's and why is EQ2 so damned compelling (I downloaded it oddly to prove it wasn't addictive, I was so very very wrong)

In you're opinion which is better, I'll include guild wars and other mmo's as well in this.

I've played roughly 80% of the MMOs released since UO, from big budget AAA titles to obscure nonsense.

Being as objective as possible, WoW was significantly better than EQ2 on numerous levels. I know it's hip to hate on the popular titles in here, and most of the people who do like WoW played it until they were sick of it and are now bitter, but its MONUMENTAL success and utter dominance of its genre were not by accident. It's not my favorite MMO of all time, but it's a damn sight better than EQ2.

EQ2 isn't a bad game though. There are things there to like.

You haven't actually given much reason as to why WoW is better or even why EQ2 is bad XD

Let's say you didn't like cheese sandwiches. Could I then be expected to explain to you why cheese sandwiches were good?

WoW just *played* better than EQ2, from the start. It looked better, moved better, played more intuitively. It was friendlier. EQ2 had more polygons, but somehow managed to make them look worse. They leaned too heavily on instancing for zones. Their crafting was a byzantine nightmare. I could go on and on, but again...if you like that kind of thing, it's going to be like me trying to explain to you why your favorite thing is bad, and you're going to think I'm a liar.

I'll say again, that one didn't end up FTP and the other didn't end up eating 60% of the entire MMO market by accident of fate.

Eq2 is with no doubt the better mmo. Without hyberpole, it is one of the absolute best mmos on the market at the moment. It has an amazing variety in classes and races, a great amount of depth from the aa system, an incredible breadth of content (all of which is still worth doing), an absolutely amazing crafting system (I had four crafters are max level when I quit about 8 months ago), player housing (!!!), and most importantly... a super cool community.

Eq2 is great. Anyone who says WoW is better needs to seriously re-evaluate their tastes in mmos. If you have any questions about eq2, feel free to ask. I've plsyrd the game off and on for about two years. It's a great game... I cannot possible recommend it enough!

And contrary to the above poster's insult, eq2 is not free to play. There is a version that is free to play, but the subbed servers are alive and kicking, as well as being totally seperste from the f2pers. He also assumes popular=good, which I dont, need to explain why that is wrong :)

World of Warcraft, as should be known by now, made it's success by taking liked elements of the current MMO's around when it was first crafted, streamlined them into one nice looking package using pretty low graphical standards to create a cartoony look that still looked good even with bad poly counts. The low graphics made a game that is supposed to be played by ALOT of people actually playable by people almost anywhere aslong as they had an internet connection.

The misstakes that keeps getting made by titels trying to bring down this MMO giant is really simple. Too high graphical standards that already there eliminates a huge group of customers and the "stale" combat that comes with it(if you've played Aion you know what I mean). They also seem to think that an MMORPG have to consist of the following elements: Crafting, Leveling, PvE and/or PvP. Why yes I am looking at you Aion, AoC and Warhammer Online and no I have yet to try EQ2.

No, I don't assume that. I stated that the popularity of one over the other is not an accident, but at no point do I say "popularity = good". If you'll notice I mentioned that my favorite MMO of all time was NOT WoW. It was EQ1.

So really, I could come in here with any retarded MMO, claim it was the best ever, full stop, and be done with it. Vanguard is the best MMO ever! EVE Online is the best MMO ever! Warhammer Online is the best MMO ever! Aion is the best MMO ever! And someone, somewhere, really does believe that. For them, it is 100% true. And hey, if they claim otherwise, just call Appeal to Popularity and make the argument that just because hardly anyone bought or played your MMO doesn't mean it's BAD. It's AWESOME. JUST NO ONE HAS FIGURED IT OUT YET. Except, you know. All those people that did buy it, and then dropped it. Because it was kind of crappy. Like, say, with Everquest 2. Which plunged from 350,000 subscribers to just over 100,000 in just a couple of years. At some point you need to accept that your niche MMO is niche for a reason.

EQ got rolled over by WoW at release. They were the two heavyweights, released head to head, and one absolutely steamrolled the other. EQ2 did not release well, for the reasons I stated and then some. WoW was clearly the better game at launch, and has continued to be the better game throughout their lifespans. One redefined MMOs and pushed them into mainstream culture. The other failed to even capture the player base of its predecessor. You can pretend there are a lot of non-quality related reasons for this if you want. You can pretend that the great unwashed masses somehow have been unable to distinguish a good game from a bad game, and that only you and a select handful of chosen brethren can appreciate the multitude of exceptional qualities that EQ2 possesses. If that makes you feel better. After all, it's not a bad game. Just a deeply mediocre one, and it's mediocrity is reflected in its piss poor subscription numbers. I guess I've played enough MMOs now that mediocre isn't spinning my wheels the way it used to. YMMV.

Oh you'd love it. It has amazing crafting, after all. You can spend 3 hours making a table.

Gotta agree, hated the crafting in EQ2, other than that something about it just made me feel.. bored, and I stopped playing before long, and now I play WoW, which I love, but I can see why others wouldn't like it
