After seeing game play from UFO: enemy unknown, I've decided to pick up one of the X-Com games from steam, and I was just wondering which one The Escapist recommends I should get?

On a somewhat related topic, dose anyone else think the new gameplay footage of the X-Com re-boot looks seriously dull and forgettable?

My favorite is Terror From the Deep and I highly recommend it. I never played any of the others, though. Just the first two.

I haven't seen the gameplay for it, but I remember thinking when they first announced it that it would be nothing like X-Com and probably a disappointment.

I'll certainly try that one out then.

As far as being similar to the original, you kill aliens and research stuff. There doesn't seem to be much else.

I dunno which original to get, but yes, the gameplay on the new trailer looked very dull and generic. And thats sad because the first trailer made it look like such a cool game.

Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep are the exact same game, except the latter is underwater. Basically, do you prefer an underwater setting or an overland setting?

The third (Apocalypse) however is quite different to the first two, and although I enjoyed it myself, it's generally agreed that the first two are better. I don't think you should start with Apocalypse, but if you enjoy the first two it might be a good idea to try it.

Edit: The new game is not an X-Com game. It might turn out to be a good first person shooter, but it has nothing to do with the earlier games as far as I can tell.

UFO: Extraterrestrials gold (on Steam). A remake of the original X-Com game.

The new X-Com game looks typical of the modern era, dumbed down all to fuck and based on shooting while hiding behind a chest high wall.

I'll probably still buy it though...

Is it a remake simply with better graphics, or did they change gameplay and story elements as well?

Since I dont remember playing the original I cant say (I did own the original, but memory fades with time...I think its just compatible with modern PC's but I wouldnt swear to that.) :p

I've always loved the UFO/X-Com series. I remember spending my evenings after getting back from school sitting up playing UFO all night. Ahh, good times. :)

For what its worth, here's my favourites in order of preference:

1: UFO: Enemy Unknown
2: X-Com: Apocalypse
3: Terror From The Deep

Apocalypse plays very differently to the other two (real time combat for a start), but i liked it. I was never really able to get past the graphics of TFTD... the colour pallete they used for the underwater sections (aka: most the game) just looked awful if you ask me.

As to the new X-Com reboot game? I am watching it with narrowed eyes and great suspicion. I really want it to be good, I really want a modern X-Com game. But I really doubt this will be the game I want it to be.

Xenonauts (http://www.xenonauts.com/) looks far more promising.

Yeah I'm very interested Xenonauts, but I don't think it has a solid release date yet so thats why i was thinking of getting an X-Com game.
Looks like i'll either get enemy known or UFO: Extraterrestrials gold

Isn't UFO: Extraterrestrials a completely different game, albeit based on X-COM?

Anyway my recommendation would be X-COM Interceptor *runs away*

...

What? I liked it!

Get the first one, UFO Defence / Enemy Unknown.

2 is a LOT harder and might put you off, also it is a lot more complex.

The first game. The second is close enough to practically be a palette-swap in many regards. Just... much harder, and astonishingly buggy. Apoc is fun too, just rushed at the end, and quite different.

While Enforcer is a terrible game and has no real connection to X-Com, it IS fun.

I prefer Terror from the Deep over Enemy Unknown, for one reason:
You can open doors without walking through them.

I swear, some 20% of my characters died from the lack of that feature alone.
