Recently i changed my DNS settings on the xbox so i could receive American netflix content (which, btw, shits all over the UK version) and all was well and good. However. It seems to have had an adverse effect on my ability to download games and demos etc. Used to be i could download a full game in 2-3 hours max, now im lucky if i can do it in under a day. I have changed the DNS settings back to automatic but the download rate is still going painfully slow. Its taken me a couple of hours to download 90% of the hitman sniper challenge, and thats only 691mb!!

I should note that online gaming, etc. has suffered none, and my connection has been strong to all multiplayer games. Anyone got any ideas as to whats happening and how to fix it?

It's using American servers because it thinks you are in America?
But i changed the DNS settings back to Automatic, so it should have remedied that problem?

Try manually setting it back to what it was before you set it to American.

Not necessarily if the DNS servers are working it won't need to change them. Not 100% on that one i don't own an xbox but yeah its possible it hasn't set them back properly.

Now i could be wrong here, but all DNS servers do (i believe) is allow you to use a domain name instead of putting the IP address in your browser.

So by using american DNS your are accessing the American version of the website as it's looking in those domain servers to look up the entry of the IP address which on american servers points to the american IP rather than the UK.

With that said, i can't see how changing your DNS settings affects downloads as i believe that's point to point and DNS doesn't come into it. Other than establishing the connection which perhaps is the issue, but by reverting your DNS servers back this should remove it.

Also most (unless you're on virgin) UK home connections are gonna be using a BT connection, BT's DNS servers are below hope this helps.

Primary DNS: 62.6.40.178
Secondary DNS: 62.6.40.162

Oh also!, depending on you're provider they may be busting your balls on download, BT are cunts for it i can't torrent at any respectable speeds until 01:00 or download on steam till around then at a decent pace.

Hi, sorry for the late reply! I am on Virgin, and have searched through countless google results and seen that quite a few people believe that Virgin have capped some things, not sure how accurate their info would be however..

Although, my torrents, etc. have not suffered in the slightest and im sure that means that the Xbox should not suffer either, since it goes by P2P also? (Correct me if im wrong.) I appreciate the advice and will try using BT's DNS settings to see if this fixes anything.

Virgin cap stuff like a ***** :(, i left them as they bottle necked the "news groups" ports being used.

Oddly enough one of the best UK ISPs at the moment is SKY they genuinely don't give a shit what you do and let you hammer lines all day and night ;) unfortuntley i moved into my flat earlier this year so locked into a contract with BT till later next year.

But yeah try changing the DNS settings (don't think it will help:( ) and might be worth ringing virgin asking if they capped you wouldn't surprise me if they did, they are complete bastards.

If possible try testing it out of peak hours like 02:00 in the morning, if everything is fine at around that time chances are they are throttling you or something to that effect :).
