Wow, that really sucks, but it's to be expected with a closed system dependent on matchmaking and/or manufacturer architecture support. Hopefully gamers who are exclusively on consoles will learn/have learned that paying more for games while getting less is what they signed up for :):(

I was completely unaware that XBL was even still being provided for the original Xbox. After all, if you liked the Xbox, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have bought a 360 by now.
Yeah exactly, I mean is it REALLY that big of a deal? I care about online support for my original Xbox like I care for online support for my PS2
-_-

Counter-Strike Source came out the same year as Halo 2, the most popular Xbox game on Xbox Live, did and it's still being played...by a lot of people apparently.

Counter-Strike's 3rd and it came out before most of you started going through puberty.

In fact, if we ever reach some point where multiplayer support is impossible for the original Counter-Strike, I think we'll have far bigger problems to worry about, such as the impending apocalypse.

Console gamers will often point to Steam and cry foul at how its users are paying for a license and not a game, but looking at even current generation games losing multiplayer support, it's hard to not see the irony in their criticism.

This seems odd, but not really a big deal. Its not like they're going to steal the games from you. They have no profit to make to run these servers for these games. It just makes business sense.

Yeah, they're just stealing a major component of the game from you. No big deal, eh? :p

Yes, actually. It really isn't. They have no profit to make to run these servers for these games. It just makes business sense.

Good, all 1000-ish people playing have to move on now.

Anywho, I don't really see this as an issue.

I thought they should have done this awhile ago, to be honest.

Which is why games shouldn't be built on multiplayer :)

Right, but are you a consumer or a stockholder? What makes sense and what is right aren't always the same thing.

I suppose there are a lot of corporate apologists on here though. I'll never understand that.

And why exactly do they charge their consumers a subscription fee then if they won't even keep their services running? What exactly are people getting ripped off for?

Many people find multiplayer to be the part of a game that provides significant replay value, at least for major blockbuster titles. I happen to be one of them; I very rarely buy games that don't have a strong multiplayer component.

I might log in 20-60 hours in a single player RPG. But I have logged in 500-1000 hours in games like Super Smash Brothers Melee, Goldeneye, Team Fortress Classic, and Battlefield 2.

Well, then I'm glad I have never thought of the service as anything less than a rip-off, just like the Xboxes themselves. You get PSN for free, none of this pay per period stuff, yet people love Live like it's some sort of god-given service when in fact Microsoft is likely to have taken away plenty from the Xbox systems themselves to upgrade Live and give it more "features". It's all DLC content and excuses to pay more money, nothing more.

That's right, because eeeeeeeeeeeveryone can afford to buy a new 360 at the drop of a hat. /sarcasm

These things aren't as cheap as most (wealthy) gamers seem to think. Especially if you're not from America. Everyone else pays extra, except Japan.

Awww... :( I still enjoy playing Halo 2 online. Guess it's time to sink a few impromptu online games in.
