So, Xcom 2 war of the chosen is out. at first people were complaining about the price tag (53 canadian at the moment) but finally, most people realised that the added content in the game was so massive that the price tag made sense.

I've sink a dozen of hours into it so far, and it just feel like a new game. the new mecanics that it bring into the game are fantastic, and it really forece you to change your strategies and how you play the game.

So, anybody else tried it ? what do you think of it so far ?

It doesn't work very well. It lags on me constantly with massive framerate drops and loading failures. And it crashed on me once. Since I forgot to turn on Ironman that one cost me half a level of progress. Base xcom 2 had these problems as well. I'd hoped they'd have been fixed by now.

Looking beyond that, hard as that is, I like it. It changes things up though it isn't much better than base xcom 2 or enemy within or even just base enemy unknown so for newcomers who aren't bored with enemy unknown yet, they might as well just start there.

While I am here, does anybody have any advice on those missions where you are supposed to steal crates with goodies? Ussually advent just takes all the crates while I am busy fighting them, the chosen screwing with me and the hordes of zombies walking around. Is there some specific strategy to those that I am missing entirely because I seem to go through most of the expanded game pretty alright on the third difficulty mode (classic, I think it was called) except for those missions where I just survive with maybe one or two of the 10 crates.

I'll get it once the Long War crew incorporate it into their mod. No reason to touch it until then.

In a funny sort of way I almost regret playing Long War. It's so much better than the base game that going back to the base game is downright unpalatable. Having three ability/perk options per level instead of two is a game-changer all on its own.

well, now you can actually.

in the new system, you get a perk when you level up like before. But you also each soldier get skill points, by doing some things on the terrain, like killing somebody from above, succed in an ambush, things like that. plus you get a collective pool, like by killing a choosen.

now, when you level up it's like before. but now, if you go to training center, you can see each of your soldier, and buy new skill for them. each skill cost between 10 and 15 points. you can buy the other skill in the skill three, so now you can have for exemple a grenadier with both padding and shredder. but there's more. each soldier also have a third skill set that seems to be random from other class that you can buy. i really love my sniper with shredder ! to buy a skill you take the skill point from a soldier, and if he doesnt have enough skill point, you can take points from the common pool.

seriously, i enjoy this one more than long war. the first time i've done a retaliation mission, and that i reralised that all the civilian where in the same building, with npc figthing the aliens and that i was expected to help them figth instead of just looking around to found people to save. plus i saw an alien just plain ignoring me to go kill civilian instead of attacking my squad. and there's already a ton of mission to do without adding more with an addon.

mine doesnt really lag, but yeah, it crashed a lot...

yes the crate missions are really hard. i think you have to rush to the crate, but keep a soldier near it, or else Advent will turn it back to them again. but i've seen advent blowing up the crate i was standing next to before i could claim it. wich attracted a ton of losts, while the chosen was betting the crap out of my squad.

I've had a couple of crashes, but consider the game wholly worth it.

Reapers are broken though.

Personally the real game changer from LW was that you needed to have multiple team up and running at the same time, going away from that will be hard.

But at the same time, LW does have a number of problem that aren't present or less of a concern in the base game which means that I can see myself going back to it. The game system was obviously not made with very large number of units in battle at once in mind since every body get to move in team rather than individually, a 4 v 4 is very different than a 10 v 10. LW 2 also really relied on timer (with reinforcement replacing timer in later patch) to keep things challenging, but this meant when timer disappeared fight would become completely different but due to the insane number of enemy present in those battle you ended up in a system where you had to exploit all the semi game breaking stuff, like user sniper to shoot enemy half way across the map while your team would just bum around.

Pretty much this. The fact you actually COULD and HAD to field an actual army and deal with multiple strikes and the Infiltration mechanic were all such amazing additions that going back will be incredibly hard.

That and I haven't managed to finish a run of long war 2 yet. After one catastrophic failure (Got a full Doom Bar literally right after my first Liberation), and one run that was off to a decent start (Early liberation, some good officers, etc) that I probably lost in the computer reformat I haven't really gotten back to it.

I want to, though. I adore the experience.

I'll definitely get War of the Chosen eventually, doubly so if the Long War lads manage to make use of the new mechanics somehow. But for now, I don't need it in my life yet, despite all the super cool shiny new things.

That also the case with war of the chosen. I used to use maybe 7 or 8 soldiers in a whole game before, but now the more you use soldiers the more they get tired. And while you can send tired soldiers on battle, they are not very effective, and get a lot of panic check. Plus now is a soldier is badly wounded by a Goliath for exemple, it get a fear of Goliath, so each time there is one on the map, the soldier may panic, So you need to send your phobic soldiers to the infirmary to get treatment. Soldiers that have developed friendship need to train together to level that friendship, you get constantly at least two soldiers in off screen missions... so you need a pool of at least 15 soldiers that you actually use to be effective. Plus when you do mission where the lost are present, it a whole new strategy because of the endless waves of enemy coming for you. If you stay where you are you will get overwhelmed at some point. You need to be mobile and fight at the same time.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm sure the new expansion is fine. Everything I saw of it looked like good fun.

It's just that my choice is between getting it now and starting a game that I will abandon the second Long War updates or waiting and getting the expansion improvements and the Long War improvements. Kind of a no-brainer for me.
