I have always wondered before why people smoke, but I never even looked down on them. That was 2 years ago; now I'm a regular smoker of at least 4 cigs per day. Cigs have this eloquent taste, and because of this I smoke if I'm doing nothing just to remove my boredom (Nothing like a good ole Marlboro to liven up my day). During these 2 years, I have discovered one thing: There are a lot of self-righteous pricks who think lowly of me and our certain category.

Example statement that I overheard just a few days ago:

"Ugh, I don't smoke like him. I'm not an ex-convict."

I turned and looked for the guy (I'm pretty sure from the pitch of the voice) to confront him but didn't find him because either the guy was a ninja or my eyes were broken.

Question: Pretty much what the title says.

Off T: Noticed my join date in the Escapist jumped to 1970 o_O.. Glitch?

EDIT: No, I never "smoke people in the face", I consider it rude anyway and don't worry I strictly follow "no Smoking" policies. I'm also pretty much aware that we stink. Yeah I'm a dirty bastard blabla. I'm just disappointed at the fact that people here in our area don't use THESE as their reasons but rather rely on a defective moral crapfest.

And yeah I know the dangers of smoking, I bet even a dog would know that. I'm not that too concerned about my life span though; if I die because of this then so be it. It's not like I lived a miserable life.

EDIT2: To everyone who commented that I'm stupid because I smoke, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You all changed my life completely. >xD

Lol seriously, no offense taken. ;)

EDIT3: About the smoke "flavors", there is not one bit of exaggeration in that statement. I really have a knack for tobacco smoke. Try letting me smoke something that smells like vehicle exhaust, then no I wouldn't continue my smoking habit.

Oh yeah I'm REALLY pretentious for just describing what I REALLY smell from cig-sticks. :) *game buzz* Try again folks! :p

EDIT4: Escapist "intellectuals" are funny. xD

Fascist is fascist.

There's nothing wrong with it so long as you know the risks and aren't imposing yourself on other people. Certain people like holding an opinion of smokers that they're these evil, vile people who are everything wrong in the world...at least that's the opinion of those in the states.

There's nothing wrong with smoking.

Quit. You're doing good if your average number is still in the single digits. I started 4 years ago and now 30 is a low number for me now. It's not even worth it, but it's hard to quit the longer you do it.

More OT: I've never had anyone question my smoking or even given me dirty looks. Well, except one old lady who gave me a dirty look so I gave her a dirty look back then she told me I should quit because her husband died from smoking.

I don't think most people care what you do with your own life though. The ones who do are probably nasty to everyone anyway for no reason at all.

The escapist is full of these people. People who know they are right, and you must obey their will.

I like how smoking is now, you can do it if you want, but in public places you can only do it in certain areas. So non smokers concerned about second hand smoke can avoid it.

Meh, doesn't make you evil. It's just a lot of people who do smoke are really inconsiderate of those who don't and it's a bad habit in plain view.

I detest smoking to the highest degree. What it does to peoples health, the smell, people thinking its cool, the obnoxious fumes. I cant stand it at all not even the linger of it. If you lit up next to me and I had no way to move and asked you to not and you still did.....let me just say, we would have a problem. One I would fix fast most definitely.

I think I have hit a bug... the opening post in this thread is blank for me and the time stamp says: 31 December 1969 3:00 pm with the author joining this board decades before the networks hosting it would be invented.... scary.

Also, wasn't smoking considered healthy and 'normal' in the 1960's?

On Topic though: Don't smoke, never could afford the coffin nails or I probably would. Do not think any less of people who do though, personal choice and all that. Besides, everyone in my family bar my brother smoked while my mother and sister just quit for... again, economical reasons more then any other.

Just because a person smokes doesn't mean they're evil. I've met quite a few smokers, and most of them have been decent people. I just don't like being around smokers when they light up, and most of them are pretty considerate in this regard.

Some people just like being overly-judgemental. Just chalk them up as being the hypocritical assholes that they are and move on. People like that aren't worth your time.

People always want a reason to look down on others. Smoking happens to be a "safe" one...You can't call someone racist or bigoted or other not nice words for hating on a smoker.

For what it's worth, I smoke. So my opinion might be biased.

The lungs man, the freaking lungs.

I'm not so worried that you are a criminal as I am that you can SERIOUSLY fuck up your lungs.

As a dude with asthma OR I-cannot-breath-anything-but-regular-oxygen syndrome I find it ridiculous that anyone would be willing to mess up their ability to, well, breath properly!!

But its your life and your circumstances, your choice. But don't be surprised if I make a mad dash away from you when your lighting up or I put on a gas mask if you reek of smoke.

people thinking its cool
The 80's are over (well...except according to The Escapist right now. Then I guess the 80's are yet to come). I can't remember any time in my life (that's 24 years) that I knew people who smoked because they thought it was cool. In fact, it's become kind of the opposite. Smokers are more likely to be subject to stigma from others.

OT: I don't smoke. Well...I used to smoke a pipe and the occasional cigar, but rather infrequently and not for almost two years now. But I've never smoked a cigarette and have never wanted to. But I don't have a problem with you doing it. If I like you, then I might suggest you quit. But if you say no, then I won't press the issue.

Just don't smoke in my car or in my house. If we're walking down the street or are chilling outside or in a bar or anywhere like that, then puff away. I'm not around enough smokers for second-hand smoke to be a real worry, especially since smoking laws in my city make it so I won't be around it much anyway.

People are jerks. Bender B. Rodriguez put it best:
Most of them are self-righteous about something. Vegans, feminists, racists, anti-smokers, smokers, alcoholics, anti-alcoholics, I could keep going forever but you get the point. I know that not everyone in those categories is self-righteous, but you are still a jerk (so am I!) so don't take it personally.

I'm going to let you in a secret.

You ready?

You stink.

And no that's not having a personal go at you, smoking and even being around smokers makes you stink massively on smoke. So if you think people are avoiding you/looking at you funny that's mostly why from my experience of smokers as a non smoker.

Not gonna comment on a single overheard statement from some nameless guy.

o_O this thread seems more glitched than is usual for the escapist.

I quoted the OP and now it is saying that I am the OP and that I got a warning for the post?

What does eloquent taste like? Is it a bit like pretentiousness? My cigarettes just taste like chemicals and defeat.

Every thread seems to be doing that, don't worry.

OT: I dislike smoking because unless smokers take care, they're breathing that smoke onto people who choose not to smoke. Of course, I dislike drugs in general, even medicine. The less I use them, the more effective they will be when I absolutely need them.

If I taste such 'defeat' in my smokes, then I wouldn't have any reason to continue now would I? Is it because you have a superior sense of taste than me that you choose to tell me how it really tastes like?

Screw your absolutes.

You have to accept that your habit, in certain cituations, can affect others. If you smoke in a confined space with me and in particular my significant other who has very very sensative lungs i will hate you with a burning passion. Or in an area where i have to stay for ages, IE queueing area or waiting area or such like, especially festivals in the crowed where im stuck right next to you for hours. If its a big open space where i can move away, or ill only have to pass through it for a second? Thats perfectly ok. If its a huge room thats well ventilated? Perfect. Your own home and land? Awesome.

Basically as long as it isnt forced on me i wont jugde you for your habits at all. What you do is your choice and its the epitomy of arrogance to assume we all know better than you and you are nothing more than a foolish child. You made your choices, you are not an idiot, you just made them under your own views and thats just fine. Just please dont force me to share those choices by smoking somewhere that forces me to smoke too. Once that happens ill get pissed. Stay somewhere appropriate to smoke? And we have no issue, i have many friends who smoke.
