I normally don't do this type of thing, but I saw one of their few top 10's a couple of weeks ago. If you don't know who they are, there the guys you see on Maxilliam_Dood's late night streams or Assist Me Shows. To make sure there is no misunderstanding, the type of games Simmons (Max's best friend) has in his list are single-player third person beat'em ups/hack n slash games. AKA spectacle fighters as Yahtzee coined them. So you won't see TPSs, FPSs, or Dynasty Warriors/style games on the list. Keep in mind this is his list of games that he has played to completion, so you might not see your personal favorite game on the list. After looking at the video or typed in list below what's your personal top 10? Do you agree or disagree with Simmons? Discuss!

10. Legend of Korra
9. Transformers Devastation
8. No More Heroes
7. DmC (2013)
6. DMC 3
5. DMC 4
4. DMC 1
3. Metal Gear Rising
2. Bayonetta
1. Bayonetta 2

I have some disagreements with DmC (2013) being that high on the list unless he's talking about the Definitive Edition, yet it's obvious that he is talking about the vanilla version. Legend of Korra, sadly, would not be on my list; and he's got 4 games from the same franchise, but once again, his list.

My Top Ten

10. Mad World
9. Killer Is Dead
8. Transformers Devastation
7. No More Heroes
6. God Hand
5. Viewtiful Joe
4. Bayonetta
3. Metal Gear Rising
2. DMC 3
1. Bayonetta 2

7. DmC (2013) - Mediocre
6. DMC 3 - Fine
5. DMC 4 - Mediocre
4. DMC 1 - Mediocre
3. Metal Gear Rising - Mediocre
2. Bayonetta - Demo was boring

I used to like the genre. Now I find it mostly monotonous and shallow.
Really? Why? Yes, the genre is lacking not as much as it use to, but we're getting more of these style of games in 2017 or 2018. Unfortunatelly that's waht happens sometimes; if average, mediocre, or even bad games flood the market, you'll see less and less causing it to poison the genre. What probably didn't help was that between 2010 to 2013, we had a lot of games being more like God of War instead of Devil May Cry The dumbing down of games like DmC (2013) or Ninja Gaiden 3 (Vanilla) weren't helping matters either.. But that just makes games like Bayonetta or Rising all the more valuable to me.

Do you ever have top ten or five when you still cared?

I do agree on most of your Capcom/Platinum/Grasshopper picks. DMC, Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, No More Heroes, God Hand.
I'd throw in Vanquish as well. Great game, for some reason overlooked by most.

The genre was always kind of crappy, even back when I liked it. The DMC and Bayonetta variety are about combining stylish combos, one empty room after another. There's nothing to break up the arm-straining monotony. I like adventure and level design in my action. The stories are almost always poorly told and the music is cheesy. And now with Platinum Games leading, it's all about automating the combat (You don't even need to face your opponent.) and adding shitty QTEs.
I'll level with you on some points: Platinum did get a bit QTE focused with Bayonetta 1 & some parts of Rising, but they fixed most of that in Bayonetta 2, and Nier: Automata (from what we've seen so far) looks to be lacking entirely. DMC, aside from the reboot, always had puzzle solving to break up the monotony; even if it was just solve simple puzzle here, or run back to get a key to there. Bayonetta barely has any, and Rising got rid of the puzzles entirely, because Platinum knew people wanted to focus on the combat. The game to have the best balance in breaking up the monotony was Viewtiful Joe. VJ knew when to do puzzles without being overly long or frustrating. VJ2 on the other hand is a different story.

To be fair, DMC1 had Dante automatically locking-on to the nearest enemy near him, if a player wasn't holding down the R1 button, so that's been around since the genre started. I would not call the combat automated for Bayonetta, because it's require input and effort on the player's part. Unless somebody's playing on Easy (Automatic) Mode, but I highly doubt you're doing that. I take it you were more into Western style action games like God of War or Darksiders? Nothing wrong with that, everyone has their own preferences.

When you're quoting someone that has footnote, you just simply delete the footnote before hitting the post button. Sorry for the trouble there.

I actually agree mostly with someone else's list for once. though i've only played bayonetta, mgr, dmc, viewtiful joe.

it sucks not enough people make these kind of games, and platinum kind of disapeared to me, since bayo went wii exclusive, and i do not know what else they've made recently.

Valkyrie Drive Bhikuni was kind of similar, but lacks level variety, and difficulty, since enemies rarely attack. making it inbetween platinum style and dynasty warrior style.

A demo comes out December 22. The game releases on March 7, 2017.

Release date is unknown, but probably in early or mid 2018.

I guess I can nominate...

4) Enter the Matrix
3) Darksiders
2) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (console version)
1) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (console version)

...yeah, that's all I can think of that I've played that might fit the criteria. Well, Devil May Cry also, but I played that for about 5 minutes back in the day on a friend's PS2.

Once again, his list. if you want to put in Dynasty Warriors games, I have no problem with it at all. I think Simmons reasoning behind it is as far as he is concerned, all DW games play the same with few differences here and there. Simmons does have a known dislike for the genre; see any of the Hyrule Warriors vids on their channel.

The reason why they're not on my list is because I was never a big fan of the series. I highly enjoyed Samurai Warriors 4, DW 8XL, and Hyrule Warriors though. If there ever comes list about those games or games of that caliber, I'll make sure to put my personal list on there.

I've seen that video and it is one of Sterling's best. It actually encouraged me to get DW 8 (PS4) and Samurai Warriors 4, albeit used. Hyrule Warriors I paid full price for. Simmons and Max for that matter have seen both of his DW videos and do get why people like the genre or series, it's just not their thing.

Guess my opinion would be, tying into Ezekiel's point, that this style of game really hasn't seemed to advance much since the mid nineties. IMO the original DMC was the exceptional peak in almost ever aspect, and even NGB was over rated the farther it went along. Truly a case of difficulty for difficulty's sake. As a kid I didn't think as much of it of course, but I have to wonder now if things like, well, everything besides the combat even matter in the vast majority of these games...or ever will.

dynasty warrior games are really stale. besides the fact that there are lots of characters. it's basically just button mashing.

I prefer games by tamsoft/marvelous; neptunia hack slash games, onechanbara, senran kagura, valkyrie drive. over dynasty warrior stuff.

I do prefer Senran Kagura and Onechanbara compared to the DW series. The only Musou game I could recommend to you is Hyrule Warriors, and that's if you already own a Wii U.

Wow, action is a really generic, easily exploited term...Well I guess I can try and come up with my 10 favorite.

1 - Just Cause 2
2 - Otogi: Myth of Demons
3 - Batman: Arkham City
4 - Hyrule Warriors
5 - Batman Returns (SNES)
6 - Max Payne 2
7 - Crackdown
8 - Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis/Mega Drive)
9 - The Punisher (PS2/Xbox)
10 - Transformers: War for Cybertron

Just Cause 2 is there because I haven't played the third one yet but DAMN if that series doesn't epitomize the definition of the word "action"! I considered putting Crackdown on here too but...ya know what, I think I will...there we go: Anyway, Just Cause 2 for me is the best action game because it's literally about blowing up a Banana Republic. What could be more action-packed than that?

Otogi: Myth of Demons is similar to Just Cause 2 but you're in feudal Japan and destroying every man-made object you can while you murder yokai and other demons based off of Japanese folklore so as to save trapped souls. It's a game by Fromsoft and I'm surprised they haven't spent their Souls money to remaster this game and its sequel...

Batman is a pretty great action game. The bosses aren't much but the one time you fight Mr. Freeze and the one time you fight Clayface and the one time you fight Raz Al'Ghoul are the reasons I chose this over the other four titles in the series (also I never played Knight or Origins: Blackgate). Anyway, I like the stealth and puzzle elements but the action seems to be the main focal point of the game and it's such a good fighting system that a multitude of other action games have ripped it off!

I restrained myself somehow and only used one Warriors game...the one that most appeals to me! I would have put Gundam or Fist of the North Star but the frame rate for those games are awful and neither allow me to play as Ganondorf or Bug-Princess Agatha.

Batman Returns is the game you wish you had in the 90's if you owned a Super Nintendo and were suckered into buying or renting Batman Forever. Batman Returns plays a whole lot like many other Konami arcade beat-em-ups like X-Men, The Simpsons or TMNT but this one focuses on the plot of Batman Returns. I think this is one of the better looking games Konami made on this engine and the boss fights were a lot harder here than in Turtles in Time so I threw this action-focused game a bone instead of going for the more popular Turtles in Time.

Max Payne was a great action game but I chose Max Payne 2 because I thought it improved on the foundations laid out by the original. It's a highly action-packed game like the original and I liked how some of the returning characters were fleshed out. The shooting felt pretty fantastic and even the slower paced levels were really engaging for me.

Crackdown is a game where you are a super solider who gets stronger by punching people off of buildings. The stronger you get the higher you can climb and the farther you can throw your Government issue car. Eventually you climb the tallest building in the world and throw the leader of the evilest gangs off of said building. Absolutely essentially in any action game.

Streets of Rage 2 is a classic Genesis game. I like how varied the levels are but there's a definite connection between each one of them. The playable characters are nicely varied too. It's an undeniable classic in the action genre and other people who grew up with Sega consoles can explain why better than I ever could (Kim Justice comes to mind).

The Punisher on the previous generation...well, the previous gen before that I guess since it's on PS2 and Xbox feels like a more arcady Max Payne. You are The Punisher and the action that ensues is really solid and broken up with interrogation scenes that needed to be censored for some reason. I kinda wish there were more Marvel cameos but I'm mostly glad this wasn't a straight adaptation of the early-2000's Punisher movie. You know, the one that featured John Travolta and wasn't nearly as good as Warzone (ie: the best superhero movie of all time).

Transformers: War for Cybertron felt like I was playing an extended season finale of the original cartoon. I liked how being humanoid or being a vehicle was equally viable in combat and the shooting didn't feel weak compared to the melee combat. I considered putting Warhammer: Space Marine in this slot but I've never actually finished that game and what's more, in WSM you can't transform into a jet plane. Both are really good action games though.

If there is any regret of me not getting the original XBOX, was the niche titles on there. The series deserve an HD release, but the problem is Sega owns the publishing rights, and where they are financially, would not even bother.

As said before, I was never a huge fan, but thank God for Jim Sterling; that he got me interested in Hyrule Warriors. And I didn't care for much Legend of Zelda (Sega kid) either, but I respected the series. I paid full price dumped hours in to it and most of the DLC. Playing HW hot me motivated to try out Samurai Warriors 4 & DW 8 (PS4 version).

Batman Returns on the SNES is better than most of the brawlers released on the system. A lot of the brawlers felt too slow compared to Streets of Rage, or omitted the multiplayer. At least Returns had the excuse of being meant to be played with 1 player; movie license and all. It was a better Final Fight style game than FFght1 or FFght2 on that system.

What seperates Streets of Rage 2 from most 2D brawlers was the variety of moves for all four characters. Nobody played the same, had different movement speeds, and special abilities. Not mention having multiple throws, grabs, a recovery move from being thrown, and the most badass techno/dance/house heavy soundtrack you have ever listened too. All coming from a 16-bit console that could rival some arcade games from the era. Sega literally made a game that was an arcade game made for the console (which was what they usually excelled at).
