After coming into numerous occasions where in a house toothpaste tubes or ketchup bottles are strained to the point of absolute exhaustion, i have always been left with much fury. It seems people insist on refusing to open new items so they "get the most" out of their current product, all because they are too cheap to start on another one even if it means effort and straining to get anything out. This is extremely annoying to me and i don't see why you should have to force something out every time you go to brush your teeth or apply condiments to your food. My mother is especially guilty of this penny-pinching trait. I've been called wasteful for throwing things out when they start to get low, rather than fully depleted.

So my question to you - are you cheap or are you wasteful? Do you try to coax out that last drop of tobasco sauce or shower gel? Do cheap people annoy you? Likewise for wasteful people?

Your thoughts!

Depends on the mood I'm in, or how much effort is required for a "cheap" task...
But if I can help it, yeah, I'm usually cheap. I'm the type of guy who would stick my hand down a drain for 5c.

I'm quite cheap in this perspective. I don't like to waste things because I always try to remember that some people are in dire need of things we call waste. That and it saves money (probably the Dutchy in me talking here :p) in the long run.
I'm not really Scrooge amongst friends or family and try to support them when needed. But everything in the material sence, I'll use to the max.

If you buy something, use it all, our landfills are full enough already without people throwing away half-full tubes of toothpaste.

I certainly wait until the container is mostly empty. I'm not annoyed by wasteful people, I just like to think I'm better than them ;)

i do shake the ketchup bottle till it's empty, i don't care about throwing it away as long as we have another one though.

Well, I try to squeeze a bit more out of my toothpaste tube, but I can certainly agree when it's empty. I won't keep trying to get anything out of it at that point

I use what I can. Ketchup is usually dependent on the container. I buy new shampoo around 1/4 of the way down and put the old shampoo in the new shampoo bottle when necessary.

I mainly try to squeeze out whatever I can and only open a new one when I know I can't get enough out anymore without half an hour of effort

Also it turns into a game of chicken with family members - you try to make it so they finish it and have to open a new one.

Actually, in most places that aren't developing countries.

Moving on...
I try to finish up things as long as it doesn't take too much effort to do so, but I have a tendency to leave things that are nearly finished for others to find, much to the chagrin of my family.

Who pays for these products?, I can stretch out a bottle of hair gel for about six months since having to pay for everything myself now.

Couldnt have put it better myself.
I'd rather not agree with awful generalisations.

Mostly I prefer to use stuff until it's empty, but I am forgetful as all hell and am often forced to throw stuff out 'cause I forget to put it back in the fridge after I use it. ):

Because you are silly! Everyone loves to stereotype, even when the stereotypes don't quite mesh; all Americans are fat, but they love to waste food! This is why they buy super-super-super size, so they can eat more than they need and still have enough to throw away! God bless McDonalds!

OT: I do try and use everything, but my flatmate and I end up throwing out a fair bit of food that's gone off after being left at the back of a cupboard or whatnot. Though this morning, I did notice that he'd squeezed our almost empty tube of toothpaste so it was all near the top. I was too lazy to do it myself the night before, and went with the 'wring it out' method of just contorting the tube until I had enough on the brush.

I completely agree, I'm French and I love seeing French stereotypes like the Heinekken advert with the lobster.
FELIP FELAPING ALL OVVER ER FAICE!.

But just saying "pah Americans" isn't a stereotype, its just saying "pah Americans"

I always end up trying to get as much as I can out of the container before throwing it out. I know I'm fairly cheap, and I'm fine with that.

People who don't pay for the product / bills (i.e. sons and daughters living with parents) really have no right to complain.

Aren't Americans depicted as wasteful jerks anyway?

(Note: I am American and don't support this stereotype.)

Using all the ketchup/shampoo/lube: getting your money's worth

Refilling ketchup with ketchup packets stole from Burger King: cheap.
