- you have "idea" .
- a brilliant idea .
- or a video game script .
- or any story concept .
- it may be very innovative and fun .
- it may have new gameplay mechanics .

- but nothing else you have .
- no skill .
- no programming .
- just you are a hardcore video gamer .

so then ... you want to make video games , you have better ideas to be farmed, to be invested and to be harvested by video games .

you have written your video game dream , your idea , your story concept down on paper with pen , you are going out , walking in the street , stepping into any video game/interactive entertainment corporation/company building ...

now , what is next ? you will be game-tester ? or kick-assed ?

You wouldn't get hired. I did some research into it, and the video game industry is one of the toughest to get into. Everyone has an idea, but you need to prove that you can actually help make it happen. If you don't have any programming skills, you might get a job as a script writer or maybe an artist. Other than that, not a chance.

you are right , people . maybe it was easy to be accepted or hired before PS2 era . but now , it is very challengable to enter into . every company or corporation demands more skill , more work , more creativeness , more ... from people as if we are overpowered or overgodly RPG characters . well ... i made this thread . i have a little hope . maybe there are some exceptions of getting the job not so hardly . still it is very locked door .

i guess other ways may be better to enter video game industry ,

- like writing the "enhanced" book or the movie script of your idea , your video game story concept . remember The Witcher .

People don't hire people with ideas. They hire people that can logistical make ideas a reality.
do you mean that "ideas are so many but there are less skillful people who are able to turn the ideas into video game reality with fun and innovative gameplaying aspects" ?

No, BallPtPenThief means people with ideas and skills in creating a game. As in: Programming or Art.

oh . i see . thanks ~! now i get it : i have to learn more video game programming .
not just technical, but logistics. example, if you could talk a bunch of online people into contructing videogames assets and then talk a programmer into compiling them into a mod then you would be a videogame producer.

many people get into modeling and map making thinking it is a stepping stone to being designer only to get stuck in an asset mill making things for crappy games.

figure out what you want to do, and do it on an indie or mod level. then use the credit from that to leverage into a bigger position.

You're not going to walk into Valve headquarters, say "Guys, I've got a great idea for a game- radioactive chipmunks!" and get hired on the spot. Read any video-game-centered forum (this one included) and you'll see that everyone and their pet radioactive chipmunk has ideas for video games; dig deeper, and you'll see that about 96% of these ideas are nothing more than "They should make a game like Halo, only set in Westminster Abbey circa 1466!" or other equally derivative things.

Video game developers want people who can bring ideas into reality- whether that be through art, coding, modeling, etc. Working on a successful or highly-creative independent Mod can do wonders for that (see: the Narbacular Drop team), not to mention give you critical experience with working as part of a team towards a common vision. Don't expect to ever be made a project lead without LOTS of that experience.

Heck, you could even take up making Flash games; if they're good enough, you may just get noticed.

Analyze the game production format on sites like gamasutra.com.
Recreate it in a way that supports a done-for-free or low paid format.
Network.
Be realistic.
Start to build.
Get business acumen.
Have HEAPS of free time.
Have a healthy stubbornness and determination - pioneer.

Well, I think I have a fairly good idea, and it's not a shooter or anything like that! Though I might get laughed at for the concept/art-direction but the art direction is only the way it is because I have absolutely no art talent. I'd tell you my idea, but I'm to paranoid.

Though my idea is more fit for Indie development, but one I have no idea how i would create it seeing as how most indie games are 2D anyway and 2 indie development doesn't have the kinds of things I'd want to have to work on it, like Mo-cap.

And I'd atleast help with Mo-cap, I like animation.

Am I just rambling to myself?

My solution to my own set of problems is to plan to branch out into more than one career path. What I want to do is develop Film, TV, and Video Game concepts. I would like to think that I have the next great idea, but I know I don't. However, I know lots of other people do, and I hope to one day establish a new place where young, high-minded, independant new media hopefuls can converge and work together to make bright and intelligent entertainment for the future. I can tell you right now that this will not take up it's roots in California.

While I'm dreaming, I'd like a PS3 made of chocolate and a 1985 Porsche 911

When you watch the credits to almost any video game, did you ever see an "Idea Men" section?
