Since almost 10 years I have been a gamer where I almost never buy a games on release.
Certainly more if it a triple A games.
I can wait up to a year or 2 before doing it (depending of the style of game)
Why? Lower price, patched and less buggy games, mods, included dlc, more well done review to look at and known if it worth it or not.
no more I want to be burned on a game that feel half done because the release was way to quick, I think us gamers should try and wait more and more, because now, publisher are cutting more and more corners to usually release it in time.

The only games I buy immediately are multiplayer where getting it sooner rather than later is expected (I just got Battlefield 1, Madden 17, and NHL 17). If you wait for those ones, you usually get left behind.

I also just bought XCOM 2 because FUCK YEAH!!!, XCOM 2 is finally out for my Xbox One.

You know, I'm probably a bad example right now. Contrary to what my sentence above me shows, I do usually wait for games just because they drop in price so quickly that there is no real need to buy them right away. Even when I do buy them immediately like the games above, I get so many deals that I don't think I've paid full price for a game in years (by default, I get 20% off games for buying Best Buy Gamers Unlocked, which was $30 for two years and has already paid for itself repeatedly and many of the more popular games like Battlefield 1 get me an EXTRA $10 off for that membership).

I can wait to buy lots of games, but not all. New Dynasty Warriors? Or more so NEW ELDER SCROLLS!? No fucking way am I waiting.

Plus someone has to buy the game to let you know if you should have waited anyways.

Also some games can die out if it has multiplayer, so sometimes waiting means missing out.

You can buy games Day 1 at discount like tippy2k2 mentioned (Best Buy) and you can sell them after finishing the game thereby you're basically buying it for the price you have to wait perhaps a year or more for. I bought The Order 1886 at launch due to loving the setting of the game and TESLA!!! was a character. I played the game and only had it for maybe 2 weeks and sold it maybe paying a total of $20 when it was all said and done. I like to be able to play games when I want and if I want to play a game Day 1, I can while basically paying what the game will end up costing a year+ later.

Ugh. That wouldnt work. Like at all. Gaming wouldn't be able to sustain itself if that was the case. If everyone, hell if the majority waited 2 years after a game came out to buy them, gaming would die out so fast because devs and publishers wouldn't be able to sustain themselves.

What you forget is, the reason some people can wait a couple of years to get a game cheaper and all patched up, is because others buy the games at full price.

Yeah, I could. I have. But there are games I make exceptions for. Kingdom Hearts 2.8/3? Pre-ordering those. The next Dynasty Warriors game? At the very least a day 1 purchase. I'm thinking about Pokemon. They don't tend to be bad, so I see no harm in pre-ordering those.

After that, everything else can wait. Hell, I finally got Killzone 2 days ago for 5 or 10 bucks. Wasn't worth it.

I've bought basically every Pokemon game sight unseen since Gold/Silver on the Gameboy Colour. I have never been unhappy with this pattern of purchasing.

I wait for a lot of games. Usually the yeah-it-looks-okay-but-nothing-special kind of games. They'll generally appear on Steam on sale after less than a year.

But some games I really don't want to wait. Waiting for XCOM? Fuck no. Waiting for The Last of Us? Fuck no. I want to play them right now and I'm willing to pay a premium price for that.

Also, games with a multiplayer focus. They're at their best at the start when the servers are bustling and everyone is learning and the annoying meta tactics haven't set in yet. You buy that kind of game two years down the line and everyone who's still playing already knows the maps and knows which guns are the best or whatever. Sure, you can still have fun and you'll catch up, I've done it multiple times, but it's an uphill battle. And that's assuming it even still exists and has a healthy player base after two years.

Does buying early have a risk? Sure. I accept that risk. It's called exercising one's judgement.

This is how I feel. If I really want a new game I'll get it on launch with no regrets. Though for most games I'll wait until they have been out for a while for the reasons in the OP.

Counterpoint: You should make purchasing decisions that align with your budget limitations and interest in the product.

Pretending there's one rule which fits everyone and every game is....silly.

Well I know its kinda ironic, because the game need people to buy them at launch so we can see the failure of those games, when I hear games that just came out and had fricking huge bugs and problems, false promess and such, its bad that some people have to be burned so some other consummer don't fall in the hype.
I guess its just me, but now I rarely want to look at promotionnal video or anything so I don't succomb to hype.
Luckily we have refunds now

Even one individual doesn't have one rule. I got Metro Last Light for something like $5 in a Steam sale a couple of years after it came out. I have my reasons for buy Battle Field on pre-order (which got me something extra from Gamestop. Dunno what).

As you write, depends upon the game and one's budget.

Big reason I grabbed BF1. Buddy wants to play on line. He's not going to wait two years.

The only game in the past few years I've bought on release was Overwatch and that's because I'd already played the shit out of the beta and knew exactly what I was getting.

I never buy AAA games on release day, except for Hyrule Warriors (Wii U). Most AAA games are too fucking expensive, I refuse to pay $80 for a game (yes many of them are $80 where I live), the AAA industry can go fuck itself. Esp. since it's been proven that promotional material can't be trusted.

Yeah, 60 dollars is crazy. I'm confident lower prices would attract more buyers, but AAA rarely tries it. And then they're surprised when their overpriced games sell below expectations.
You're lucky you only have to pay $60. Why it's so much more expensive here in Canada even with digital distribution I have no fucking clue. Nevertheless, the extravagent prices are presumably to cover the rising costs of development, but whose to blame for that? I accept no responsibility. I never asked for all the bright shiny HD graphics and what not. Most of my favorite games come from the 4th, 5th, and 6th console generations.

The only time that I will buy a game on release are the ones I KNOW I will like eg Pokemon, Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem.

Ok that sound like I buy franchise games but I did buy Hyper Light Drifter on release day and I loved it!
