For those that don't know, the XCOM series was one of the most well-respected turn-based strategy games for the PC during the 90's. Now a reboot is in the works by 2K that will turn it into a first person shooter with only light strategic elements (along with changing the factions and the era it's set in). Given that it's such a radical change for the series, a fair number of fans basically responded like this:
(Yes I know it's not actually five seconds)
Now I've never played the XCOM series, but I can relate to Spoony's reaction given what Gearbox is doing to the Brothers in Arms series:
What are some of your cherished game series that you feel have been screwed over? What's caused you to feel like shouting "BETRAAAAAAAYL" at the top of your lungs?

When I heard that the new Steel Battalion will be playable without a controller that can crush a child, I was somewhat peeved. When I heard that they were doing without a controller altogether...well.

"BEETRAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYLLL!!! DAMN YOU KINECT!"

I don't think I've ever been in that situation. Guess I should count myself lucky. Y'know, until Valve releases Half Life 3 as a facebook game or something.

PS. I predict more than a few mentions of Bioware in this thread.

A few from recent memory
Hitman Absolution being Convictionified to make it more "accessible" also dropping Bateson and Kyd
Devil May Cry getting a gritty for the sake of looking gritty reboot developed by Ninja Theory

I never played X-Com, but from what I've seen and been told, they have changed the genre of play style, the setting, the art style, and it has no reoccurring enemies from previous games. You know, nothing like X-Com. Bioware has just created hybrid titles. Now if ME3 was a fighting game, set in a medival fantasy setting, and had completely different characters...

Nnnnnnnnggghhhhaaaaaaaawwwwwhhhhhh.

Please excuse me, my eyes and brain just melted right out of my skull and now the apocalypse is spewing forth from the pus-filled gooey pools that remain.

OT: Aaahhmmm, nothing jumps immediately to mind. Fable died a slow death anyway, really, so when the on-rails trailer for Fable: The Journey appeared at E3 it didn't hit me quite as hard as it might were it instead just after a stunning sequel to Fable.

I didn't know about this Brothers in Arms game. I am totally fucking shocked. It's gone from an intense squad based tactical shooter to a cartoony gore porn Inglorious Bastards rip off? If it wasn't called Brothers in Arms I think people would be less disappointed, but the fact it is is basically a gigantic cock slap into the faces of their fans.

OT: Haven't actually played it, but pretty disappointed that Dawn of War 2 went from base building to a squad based RPG. Loved me the base building and the races added by the expansions and mods (can't blame the about the mods though).

Spyro had a voice in all the good Spyro games (1, 2 and 3)...

OT: When the writers of Spongebob changed and the comedy became dull and simplified (after season 4)
Also when they made and released Star Wars Episode 1. That's a fairly obvious one

MW2, though it wasn't immediate... it took time till eventually I thought "You know what? What am I playing this piece of shit?" Something along the lines of BETRAAAAAYL comes across my mind whenever someone mentions it now; serious, its amazing how much fun they sucked out of the game to the point I actually lose fun playing it till I can't keep going and need to get up and leave the room... That's perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but I really wasn't happy how that game turned out.

Crackdown 2, when they cut out all gang factions business and made it less Crackdown and more Brutal-Counterinsurgency-and-killing-zombies; I was furious when they kept the same location, but made it crappier.

Halo 4, then 5, then 6. Dammit microsoft! it was supposed to be a broad ending. But honestly how can you end a popular series with a broad ending anyway?

It's been a while, you understand.
But i remember what my point was now.
It was the change in his voice, and the other characters.
Just awful.
And i loved him so much...

Got to agree with the XCOM thing, really. Past that, nothing much that I can think of.

Oh, wait. The Monster Rancher series, its gradual loss of anything resembling options, while at the same time becoming more and more RPG-y, until nothing sim-like remained in the fifth game and it became an outright RPG.

That was rather irritating.

You know, a medieval fantasy fighting game actually sounds rather fun.

Can we have it set in fantasy steampunk 19th century Scotland instead, though? Bioware and relevance to the topic at hand are strictly optional, of course.

This. When I saw that Cartoon Network was booting Toonami and creating live-action shows I...well....
Thanks, Spoony.

Of course, it sounds fun. But it would be a complete betrayal of the Mass Effect series.

Bomberman: Act Zero. Perfect example of how to ruin something amazing.

Also Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, although they weren't as bad as what Hudson did to Bomberman.

And Final Fantasy as well. At least Sakaguchi tried to redeem the JRPG industry with Mistwalker.
