Hello Escapist. I was just thinking about how far back I could remember and I thought it would make a fine thread (according to the search bar this topic has been dead for a full year).

What is the earliest memory you can remember? Why do you think it sticks out?

My earliest memory is in a small waiting room for something. My mom looks, well, more than a dozen years younger. I remember her smile, the room had striped wallpaper like a zebra and there was one of these toys. [http://www.custom-product.com/upload/1887/1912uij1/wooden-toy---bead-frame-yf9302-395.jpg]

I was taken into a doctors office with blue wallpaper. I was given a needle, I remember being really upset about it but I was given a round, cherry lollipop. I remember that the light was kind of dim. That's it.

Why does this memory stick out? I have no idea whatsoever. Maybe the colours were interesting? I remember looking at my Mom... A staring contest? She said we used to have those... The needle's easy, probably the start of my phobia (I'm over that now). I have no idea why I remember what was so memorable about that toy.

But that's my earliest memory. I wonder if I'll still be able to recall it in another ten years.

Your turn! Think back... Back before you cared about video game graphics :p

I was two, or three at the most, we still lived in California, and we were in Seal Beach, having a family day, and there was this gorgeous red Lamborghini Countach that passed down the street by us. I still remember the street where it turned and everything.

I have no way of knowing what my earliest memory is.

I have memories that certainly go very far back, but my memory of those events is so fuzzy and so colored by my more recent experiences that I have no idea if those memories are at all accurate. Even if they are, those memories are so old that I can no longer tell which is the oldest.

BTW, I've always cared about video game graphics. In fact, the degree to which I care about video game graphics has decreased as I've gotten older. So there.

My earliest memory is me in a cot, I was standing at the side holding onto the bars while my mom was reading me a story.

I assume that's the earliest memory as I was in a cot.

Mine. Well...

It was The Void... a pitch black place... neither hot nor cold. Nothing really visible.

I was there... for a long time... possibly until that fucker came.

I had to then leave to settle a few things. It's been a while since I went back.

Oh wait, THIS lifetime?

Umm... still a dark place. In my house that is now about 6 blocks away.
Waking up. It seemed like summer. I could tell I was no more than a few days old...
Yet I felt as if I was dying.
Memories... it's still blurry...

[sub][sub][sub]I am 100% serious in this post. This is what I remember.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

My earlist memory is when i was proberly 3. I got my face painted like spider man then when i got home and looked at myself in the mirror and almost shit myself. I ran away from the mirror because i was scared of myself and then my parents tried to convince me it was me in the mirror but i wouldn't believe them. lol. I was afraid of the mirror for at least a few weeks. Good memory.

Have you ever noticed when you think back on a memory you don't see it first person but instead 3rd. Like when i look back on my memorys i'm always look down on myeslf rather than through my eyes. Maybe it's just me.

I used to think one of my first memories was that of me going for the very first time to kindergarten...but later i found out that everything was absolutely different in reality, so it must have been a dream of some sort and i mixed it up. But nothing else pops to my mind right now...But i do have a really shitty memory, too.

And: Holy shit, do you really write kindergarten with a "t"? What the hell...?

I remember the exact moment I was able to remember stuff. I was 3, sitting at the table, I looked up from whatever food it was towards the spoon collection my grandmother had on the wall and asked what it was, apparently for about the millionth time.

The weird thing was I knew all of these things around me but couldn't actually remember them. They were just there.

When I was 2-4.
I was behind the wall I never go behind, where the tomatoes are. Mum was looking for me.
That there... wow, that is one strange memory. More vivid is probably the first nightmare I remember, but it's really hard to write down without it sounding stupid. Not because it's surreal, because I can't adapt my writing style to dreams xD

I was about 2 or 3. I remember dreaming about space: all stars and constellations but there was music too. As the dream progressed, the music got louder, a fan-fare of sorts. By the end of the dream, I saw an ensemble of instruments (horns, drums, possibly a xylophone...) all of them continuing to play until I awoke. Thinking back, it was no big deal but when I dreamed it it freaked me right the hell out. I ran out of my bedroom and into the kitchen where mom was making breakfast (or possibly just drinking coffee: I can't quite remember) I told her about the dream saying, "I had a horrible dream! It was about music!!" I then remember being distracted by the kitchen TV which was showing Looney Tunes.

No idea what the dream meant. No idea why that is my earliest memory. It's just there.

I had a babysitter when I was two who would sit us around the tv in her living room after the parents left and put on Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street. Stuff like that. I think my earliest memory is walking into the living room, seeing the closing credits of Scooby Doo, my mom leaving, and her putting on some scary movie. Those friggin' movies used to scare the hell out of me.

Uhmmm... It was winter time.. i must have been..3-4 years old. I have ADHD, so my time perception is crap, but at that age.. I did miss my mother, she was out for a walk with a neighbour. They might have been gone for.. 20-30 min, but to me back then, it could have been hours. Soo i did put on some cloths ( A pyjamas) and did run out to find her. She was not far from home, soo whene i did she here, i feel't soo happy, run into her and gave her a huge.
Then she lifted me up and carried me home.

Nice first memory :)

When I was only at a walkable age, my brothers decided to make toast in one of those crappy old toasters that don't pop when done before getting completely addicted to an episode of thundercats. Needless to say the kitchen started pumping smoke out the door and my brothers legged it out the door leaving me in the livingroom and my ma in bed.

Needless to say I got alot of icecream over the next week and they got bugger and all of it. Nyah!

I'm not sure when it is, but one of my earliest memories is me standing in a dark room, downstairs, refusing to go upstairs and throwing a tantrum every time someone tries to make me go to sleep. A dozen years or more onwards and I haven't changed a bit.

My first memory was going to see my little sister in the hospital after she had been born.

I remember me and my brother getting really excited then jumping on my dad yelling "Can we go see the new baby now?!" then going to the hospital to see my mum with her big glasses and big hair, holding the little pink thing that was my sister.

Humn... Would you believe it? Playing Snes at home, on the floor- Street Fighter. I remember how tense I was that day, because my mother didn't want me playing the 'violent' games.

Another memory, from around that time (and, so, potentially a little earlier) was of Tetris, on my dad's Gameboy. I was alone, under a tree in the park. I don't recall quite why, but I was at my happiest at that very moment. Maybe I got that rocket? I 'unno.

My eyes open. I am in a small room, lying on a bed.

I sit up. I see. I know things. The year, I was told, is 1994.

Got my awareness that day and have absolutely no recollection of anything before that. Later I estimated that it was sometime after July. Aside from that it was simply my first day of self-awareness. Quite weird thinking back on it.

Wow! I used to love those in the doctors waiting room!

OT: for me it would have to be just running around my old house, hiding under the table and under the stairs, for some reason I don't know. It isn't even that important... :p
