Now, I'm not talking about your favorite character as in character. Not someone you sympathize with or whose story you love the most.

TLDR:Who is your go-to fighter in any fighting game, or your favorite hero in Dota, or your favorite race in StarCraft or WarCraft and why?

I play a hell of a lot of Dota and I have a number of heroes that I really enjoy playing, as oppose to enjoying some particular role.

My first go to hero is probably Clinkz. I freaking love Clinkz. I think the reason I love him so much is because he has one of the best skill synergies in whole game. He is like little, deadly, fast metabolizing rocket. In order to perform a successful gank with Clinkz you have to use all of his skills in very fast succession.
How to gank with Clinkz.
1)Put searing arrows on auto-cast
2)Eat the fattest neutral creep and kill his child
3)Turn on Shadow walk and find some squishy hero
4)Approach him and silence him with Orchid
5)Turn on Strafe
6)Watch as his HP diminishes faster than lvl1 Pokemon being hit by Super Effective attack
Boom! In about 10-20 seconds you've used every single skill (and more) to kill enemy hero. Clinkz's ulti and strafe are incredibly powerful spells with very short durations and that dictates very active, aggressive and fast playstyle. Plus, Clinkz just looks and sounds awesome.
<img src=http://bestgamewallpapers.com/files/dota-2/clinkz-the-bone-fletcher_wide.jpg>

And then there's Treant Protector. I think main reason I love him is because he is incredibly universal. He's incredibly sturdy so he can hard lane, he's not so reliant on items and he can help his teammates from any point on the map so he can support, and his initial attack damage is almost 90 and he has second highest strength growth in the game which can make him carry. Also, his Living Armor is one of the strongest spells early game and with good map awareness you can use it to save and heal your allies.

There are many more, but I think I've said enough. So, what about you guys?

I always liked the Humans in Warcraft 2, even if they were pretty handicapped on ground maps (Warcraft 2 land maps were poorly balanced -- yet by some bizarre occurrence the sea maps ended up fairly well balanced) -- there's a certain satisfaction that comes with using an invisible mage to kill all the other guys workers.

Since Dota is on topic.
MEEPO THERE IS FIVE MEEPOS.
haha think your ganks are fun.
try meepo gank.
blink dagger onto them net and poof all the meepo.
Also laugh till u cry when people go hey im netted lets use a tp scroll.
THEN MOAR NETS btw they interrupt casting but no one knows this dont tell anyone.
no one knows this
Then boots of travel and u can clear both jungles ancients and all the lanes every minute.
Also getting to laugh at meepo who go "omg noob meepo picker" (there is one every game).
Then laughing that your 20+ kills and double if not triple his level and full build.
Then u dont even have to cast spells just your e is so powerfull as a slow.
Then u get mantra style (or rune) and crush their hopes and dreams .
As they go "OMG WE CAN FINALLY KILL HIM!!!!"
As they burn all their ultis on an illusion hoping to kill me.

For you see meepo isn't just mechanically fun he is so fun metagame wise too.

But you cant play him against 90% of the heros in the game or you just get shut down
anyone with.
aoe silences
aoe stuns
single target slow
aoe burst
aoe sustain damage
single target burst
earth shakers
displacement spells
high hp people
early global presence

so that leaves most games a very bad idea to play in.
But me playing meepo my claim to fame being that one guy who mains meepo in dota.
and i play him most games even with 2-4 bad people to play againts
and there are many people i wont flat out play meepo againts (earth shaker again).
But i still have played more games meepo then any other hero.

BUT meepo killing phantom lancer make it all ok.

How could anyone not love Abaddon?

He's adorable. He saves people. He hurts people. He makes a mean pot roast and can carry in a pinch.

Plus he was a favorite in the original DotA.

Athena from Smite.

(It's a third-person MOBA themed around the assorted deities of ancient civilisations.)

For a start, she's tanky as fuck, being, y'know... a tank. Also she can stack up to three basic attack deflections. It's pretty hilarious to charge down an enemy carry and have them open fire only to realise they're not even scratching you. It also makes her perfectly suited to body blocking shots for friendly squishies.

She's highly mobile, with a dash and an ultimate that teleports her to any ally on the map.

Also, her taunt ability is just nasty. (Short range cone AoE, causes enemies to run straight at you auto attacking for up to 2 seconds.) It can be used to peel attackers off your friends, pull enemies into places they really don't want to be, interrupt abilities and generally cause chaos.

She can also make a viable brawler with the right build. The right items (polynomicon for any of other Smite players) take her spear throws from light harassment material to serious damage dealers.

Lastly, her ult is fun to use. You target any friendly anywhere on the map, then after a 4 second charge-up, you leap to them, crashing down and doing huge amounts of damage to anyone standing near them. During the charge-up, your target takes 25% less damage. It's very satisfying to see a friend in trouble across the map and jump in to save their butts. It's also devestating when used to assist a ganking jungler.

Favourite character to play as? Oh man. It's hard for me to pick a favourite; I hop from game to game often, and almost always try to play multiple characters in each game. But, if I had to pick, I would pick The King of Fighters XIII's Mai Shiranui as my favourite character. Well, she's my favourite character to play, at this point in time at least.

Yes, that Mai.

And yes, my choice is based on gameplay, not story, personality or appearance.

I feel that Mai is a versatile character. She can play keep-away, she dominates the mid-range, and her pressure game is to be feared.

Her normals[footnote]Normals: Moves that require no special input to perform.[/footnote] are quick and have very good reach. She can play the neutral game exceptionally well; her normals are hard to contest on the ground and in the air. Also, she is a very mobile character, which makes her already potent normals even more dangerous. She can move in and out of her, and her opponent's, effective attack ranges very easily. She's a character who can control space very well, and I say that even without taking into account that she can throw projectiles.

What's extra great is that many of her normals are special cancel-able, which basically means Mai can follow up a normal attack with a special attack.[footnote]Special moves: Moves that require special inputs such as quarter-circle or dragon punch motions to perform.[/footnote] Every character has normals that they can special cancel, but very few characters are as lucky to have as many special cancel-able normals as Mai. I mean, she can special cancel (even on whiff![footnote]Whiff: Normally, moves can only be special cancelled on hit or block. Mai can special-cancel some normals even if those normals do not connect with the opponent.[/footnote]) two very far-reaching moves, her cr.D and CD, which I think is amazing. Because Mai can transition from move to move so easily, she can mount a strong pressure game. Though, to be honest, her pressure game is already pretty decent without her special moves. She just attacks so quickly and reaches so far. A lot of her normals give her frame-advantage,[footnote]Frame-advantage: A situation where a player is able to make a move before his/her opponent can. In this case, Mai's attacks, even when blocked, recover so quickly that the opponent is still in a stunned state even after Mai has recovered from her attack.[/footnote] so she has a lot of solid frame-traps.[footnote]Frame-trap: An offensive tactic that uses frame-advantage to attack the opponent. Because the attacker recovers from the attack more quickly than the defender recovers from his/her stunned state, the attacker is able to perform an attack earlier than the defender is able to perform an action. If the defender tries to counter attack, his/her attack would activate after the attacker's attack activates. The defender's counter attack would be beaten by the attacker's quicker attack.[/footnote]

As for special moves, Mai's special moveset is great. There are two special moves that are particularly useful.

Her fan toss, Kachosen (QCF+P), as you have probably guessed, is a projectile move. If you're familiar with 2D fighting games, you know that every 2D fighting game character wishes to have a projectile move. The fan toss helps Mai dominate the neutral game even better than she already does. She can play keep-away, or she can use the fan to mount or continue pressure.

Her spinning-flame-tail move, Ryuenbu, (QCB+P) is on the slow side when it comes to start-up, but man does it have range. This move is very strong in the mid-range. I don't exactly know what its hitbox looks like, but I doubt you could challenge a move like this on the ground. Mai swings her tail thingy at a good height, allowing it to catch jumpers.

What's also great is that Ryuenbu is safe when blocked. Mai is at very, very minor frame disadvantage (-1 frame!) when Ryuenbu is blocked, and the move pushes the opponent back a bit. Even though she is at frame disadvantage, the space Ryuenbu creates between Mai and the blocking opponent gives Mai favourable positioning over her opponent. Remember, Mai has quick, far-reaching moves, so she can easily take advantage of her new position. Very few characters would be as happy as Mai in that position.

Mai has her weaknesses, such as poor damage output mid-screen, and weak defensive options, but I can definitely live with that. I mean, in exchange she has a great neutral game, and a strong and safe pressure game. Also, I haven't said anything about it, but Mai has great okizeme.[footnote]Okizeme: Also known as the wake-up game, where a player attacks his/her downed opponent who is in the process of getting back up.[/footnote]

Anyway, before I get too crazy, I'll just end it here. Mai is fun to play. She has very "flow-y" gameplay, if that makes any sense. She can go from move to move and move from place to place very easily. When I play Mai, I feel like I have so many options; I get to freestyle.

Too crazy? My dear you've quite nearly written a treatise on this character. I'm willing to credit your disturbingly detailed exposition with a nary a doubt as to your ulterior motives.

Vayne in LOL cause she's high risk high reward and super fun to play.

Invoker in dota cause invoker is the best hero/champ/deity in all moba games ever.

Link in super smash brothers(only played the n64 version) he had amazing combos between the hook shot, bombs.

Warlock in WOW cause warlocks are the best.

I usually loved playin sub zero in mortal kombat but he feels so slow compared to others in the newest MK, especially if you're against a scorpion. So i swapped to kung lao, he's fun as fuck.

Holy crap thats a detailed explanation for why you chose a character on a non fighting game forum. I also almost always had Mai on my team when I played KOFXIII (I hope to pick it back up at some point but times not on my side). I chose her because I just liked most of the stuff about her from her aesthetics to her win pose to her quips and ofc her pokes and special moves oh and she looks like a ninja squirrel when moving so bonus points there. The other reason I almost always play her though is because not being a traditional KOF player her and Terry were the only 2 fighter I recognized from back in the day and I never liked Terry so I dunno I guess she sort of brings back memories of playing back in the day.

I always used to play Blanka in any game he was in (I suppose I still do) as hes the character I learnt to play fighters with and I loved his SF2 sprites also as a kid I couldnt do quarter circle or dragon punch moves (let alone spinning piledriver) very well so I stuck with the characters without them. I have expanded now but Blanka is still my main when I play.

SoulCalibur I always go to Siegfried as my main (Nightmare in SC2) I just love swinging that big ass sword around and in SC1 where I learnt him he had the coolest move in the game where he would run up to you somersault kick you in the face then slam the sword into your crumpling body. Unfortunately they took it out after that and gave it to Nightmare in a crap form where he just does it from a crouching neutral state instead. He also is great at whiff punishing with hard hitting attacks which is pretty much my style.

DOA I always go to Ayane I just love her design and moveset and I have been playing as her for a long time after Sieg and Blanka she is probably the next one I am most comfortable with.

Blazblue its Makoto all the way I am frikkin terrible with her but I have to use her shes just to damn awesome not to I will try and pick her up again when Chrono Phantasma comes out.

I love playing as all these but if I had to pick one now I would probably tentatively go with Ayane simply because I am not keen on Blankas new look in SF4 and Siegfried lost a lot of his super cool moves while Ayane just looks even better in DOA5 and retained all the moves I liked about her (and got stronger imo).

Garen form League for sure, a mighty warrior, a paragon of justice. Someone with a strong set of moral beliefs who isn't afraid to back them up and get his hands dirty. He is a hero through his deeds and actions on the battlefield, enough so that he inspires loyalty in his men and was placed in charge of Demacia's elite troops. He doesn't just say he believes in certain aspects of the Demacian dream, he embodies it. I don't know why but I guess I just always felt like Garen was the main character (which is completely stupid in a moba of course) and in a way, that seems like the most sure fire way to find the character you can relate to and like the most because in game like league, the person who you relate to or understand the most is obviously going to seem the most important.

Not to mention I love is playstyle, the guy doesn't need any fancy tricks his job is to go ham on a team and strike down the fleeing coward before they can even recognize the fact a Giant sword just came and crushed them from the heavens,

Dwarves. Short, manly, epic beards, alcohol, mines and cute irish...y accents. If a game offers dwarves I will play as a dwarf.
Except for in Rift. Their dwarves look kind of sick and sad.

Lulu from League of Legends. Love that little Fae Sorceress. Poking the opposition from several different angles, turning them into harmless critters or using it to boost yourself or an allies Speed/Ability Power, a damage/reveal which can also be a shield and that ult which gives a significant HP boost to a targeted ally and knocks up surrounding enemies with a slowing aura. Supporting has never been so fun.

Lol: Alistair the bull, i have a rather protective mindset and when i play him i play him like a bouncer at a strict nightclub, sticking close to my lane partner or adc or w/e and headbutting away those who would do harm to my VIP.
Im also fond of charging right in the middle of the enemy team and soaking up massive amounts of damage so my team mates have an easier time.

Mk9: Johny Cage. I always go for the enemies groin ^^
Also helps that the character is kinda lulzy in cutscenes and whilst being an arrogant prick might be a negative most of the time, in a game where you're likely to end up at bottom of an acid pool if you lose it's not something you can hold against him.

Tekken: Steve. British national and has a unique control scheme, fun character to play as.

Street Fighter: Ken. The cooler version of ryu imo and has awesome flaming dragon punch.

Dbz budokai games: Yamcha. Time and dbz abridged has not been kind to him but is still one of my favorite dragon ball characters and pick him whenever i can.

Leona from League of Legends. As I mentioned in the last post about awesome females, there's just something about a female all clad in armor and this protective attitude that's just all kinds of endearing. She's has a predominantly tactical moveset. So she's never used for damage:

Shield of Daybreak: Stun/Damage
Eclipse: AOE+Shield.
Zenith Blade: Hookshot.
Solar Flare: AOE Stun-Slow.

And I like that, it forces some critical thinking whenever I'm a part of a team fight. And there's nothing more satisfying than a well timed Solar Flare against retreating enemies. She's cool, and no matter how many defeats I'll get, or how many times I have a rough time laning, she'll always be my favorite.

I loved Phantom Assassin back when I was playing DOTA 2. She was the first character that I actually worked out a good strategy with. I didn't play enough of the game to get into high level tactics but it was very rare that I'd have a poor game when I was playing her.

Well... I don't play DOTA games, very few fighting games, and I definitely don't play Starcraft BUT in general when talking about strategy games I prefer to play the more "evil" characters, or at least evil looking. It's kind of fun for me to play as a bunch of Orcs or Legions of the Damned(Disciples I was always the demons). Even in RPGs, when I play Skyrim I love to play as an Orc Female. For non strategy games I love to play as a STRONG female character, both physically and mentally. I find most games try too hard to keep female protagonists a dainty little feminine flowers instead of badass warriors, so when given the chance I love to explore that. I can't wait to get my hands on Dragon's Crown for that reason... guess who I'm playing as?

Yeah Tiny is by far my best and favourite character in Dota. He needs a good support backing him up and if he doesn't get his cash money he loses some of his potential but when he gets what he needs? God damn.
