So, what kind of games do you like to play to sort of zone out? Relax, switch off your brain (at least to a certain degree), and just go into something of a zen state of chill out?

For me, lately it's been 2 games:

Sheltered and Planetbase

Both of these games are similar in their concept, while vastly different in their theme.

Both are a slow, methodical survival/build game, but one is post-apocalyptic, the other is a colony base builder on a remote alien planet.

I find both of these games to be very soothing to play. While they do have their tense moments, when something dangerous happens, for the most part, they are games where you take a slow, steady, measured approach to gathering resources, and building facilities to help your people be self-sufficient. In the early game, it's much more tense, as you haven't established everything fully, so small hiccups can lead to disaster. But once you get a decent setup going, as long as you are patient, you can safely develop your living area to a self sustaining, thriving habitat.

Plus the music for both of them are very zentastic. Ambient space sounds or nature sounds, that just help the time flow by as you help make sure your people don't die.

So what games do you play to relax and unwind with?

Open world games, like Elder Scrolls or 3D Fallout games. I like feeling like I'm doing something even when I'm doing nothing, where I don't have to progress anything to be playing the game.

Yeah, I don't care how popular it's become, Minecraft still does the job for me.

Creative mode, no flying, deep cave exploration has a certain amount of inherent relaxation that few other games can compete with.

I like to play Gnomoria (Indie PC Dwarf Fortress-lite) on Peaceful mode, or Banished, it's fun to slowly build up a town, sure there's an occasional tornado to deal with or crop failure, but overall it's relaxing to play a long game where most of the time you are just waiting, watching to see how your planning turns out and making slighty adjustments as needed.

Beyond this though, I also very much enjoy to relax with 3D Platformers, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Psychonauts, Super Mario, Jak and Daxter just to name a few. Most of these games have a fun amount of challenge that is rarely frustrating or controller-damage inducing, so it's good to just enjoy a colorful world and explore it.

1 Finger Death Punch I suppose. It's the sort of game that works best when you slip into a focused trance. It doesn't require patience or caution, like Dark Souls or Thief 2.

Oooh, yeah, good one. I do lub me some 1FDP time. It's amazing how much fun you can have with a game that only has 2 inputs. xD

Usually it's the last game I already beat that lets you roam freely, select a chapter, hunt down collectibles/trophies, the like.

Driving around the countryside in first person in GTA V is one of my favorite ways to decompress. The scale, design, and smoothness of the driving is just so on point. The more rickety the vehicle, the better the experience for some reason.

Trine 2 is the other game I let my hair down with. Pure and total beauty every which way. My play style is much more sedate than what's in the video. I like to soak in as much of the music, sounds, and visual beauty as I can.

For me I like to zone out mindlessly grinding. Part of the reason why I've played WoW for so long is that I can play it while watching a movie or something. I can do dailies, random dungeons and other minor shit in that game without even really paying much attention to it.

Otherwise I've been a fan of playing grindy RPG's. REcently I've been invested in Rogue Galaxy and trying to grind out all the monster logs and such in the game. But sometimes I'll play a pokemon game or something like that.

Also Clickers. I don't know why I like clicker games, I think I have severe mental issues. But I love clickers.

Melody's Escape

It's a rhythm runner. I'm terrible at it but whatever - I just set it to the lowest possible difficulty, which makes the game literally only play using 3 buttons. And moreover, you almost don't need to alternate them - it's "one button per section" and you get, like, 10-ish sections per track. It's for dummies. I love it. I usually go with tracks from Crypt of the NecroDancer. It's just glorious.

Lately I got round to figuring out modding in GTA and have the LSPDFR mod installed. It's quite relaxing driving around, pulling over cars and searching them, getting my K9 partner to run down chasing criminals, that sort of thing. I exclusively play in first person mode, which makes driving in particular both more relaxing as well as more intense during chases.

Also I quite enjoy playing games with bots to chill out. Lately Counter Strike, Project Reality and Forgotten Hope. Brutal Doom (namely the Project Brutality mod) too, although it's less chill out and more cathartic to blast demons to bloody chunks, as it gets pretty tense in later levels.

My profile picture should give it away but I really love "Rayman Legends" (and "Origins", but more so "Legends"). I usually try to get on it every day to do the daily challenges, the "go as far as you can" challenge on the Infinite Tower in particular chills me out.

"Dark Souls III" as well. Now that I know what I'm doing I love just charging through it as an Assassin. The optional bosses are the ones that piss me off, so I just don't do them usually.

This, a thousand times this. Before I quit WoW last year I loved to just grind levelling while listening to a podcast or a new album or something. Very relaxing. I almost want to go back to it, but I have to resist.

Yeah that game is super fun. I picked it up and have been having fun seeing what songs have a beat heavy/fast enough to make Melody start flying. So far, my hardest song is Masters of the Universe by Juno Reactor. Holy fuckballs is that song hard to get a high rating on. But yeah, it's really fun to play that with some cool songs, and just sort of zone out. xD

Paradox games in general, with classical music in the background.

Stellaris on the slowest speed especially.

I do the same, I usually pick up a GTA clone though and just drive around the city obeying basic traffic laws and listening to the radio

I just beat Sleeping Dogs recently but I still come back to it from time to time to just drive around

Papers please - story mode - I know the game may not be relaxing at times, but it does the job for me.
Pic Pic - A DS game featuring three kinds of puzzles in 400 variations of each, pretty relaxing if you're into this sort of thing.
Minecraft pacifist mode - just going around, digging, jumping, killing until it gets boring.
