I just played through VVVVVV and was reminded of just how phenomenal the sountrack is in that game. I honestly think that without it that game wouldn't be 1/4th as enjoyable as it is. I'm also looking back at the old Tales of Phantasia and Chrono Trigger soundtracks and remembering how awesome they were (and still are).

So Escapists, what is your favorite OST for a game? Also, feel free to recommend me some.

I'm quite fond of the kingdom hearts series and bastion. Though my tastes in music favour the calm melancholy type so it probably won't appeal to everyone.

My favourite is the Dynasty Warriors 4[footnote]All the other Dynasty Warriors soundtracks are great.[/footnote] OST.

A perfect mix of modern hard rock and classical Chinese and Asian music.

Honourable mentions go to Jak X: Combat Racing [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XdUJRayrzM], Crash Twinsanity [http://youtu.be/qIxM1-XPza4], Muv-Luv Alternative [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62ctk9pa48k], Sengoku Basara 3 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_yphFhOjHo], Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szzZQwawELc&feature=relmfu], the original Crash Bandicoot [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpevyPrwIio] trilogy and original Spyro [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58yy331O150] trilogy.

Bastion is my favourite. There's not a song on that games soundtrack I don't love in one way or another, it's just stunning. And the vocal pieces? Bloody hell... Seeting Sail, Coming Home is probably my favourite of the vocal songs and Build That Wall probably the most popular, so I'll point out this one:

Another really, really good on has got to be World of Goo. Some songs on the soundtrack are a bit hit & miss for me, but then there are fantastic pieces like this:

or

Genuinely amazing to think this is the soundtrack for a small indie puzzle game of all things, much of this games music easily competes with a surpasses that of the multi million dollar blockbuster stuff out there.

Bioshock, Dear Esther, Heavy Rain and Shadow of the Colosuss had some great OST's.

I have a thing for mournful classical/orchestral/piano pieces. Here are some examples from the games. If you haven't played these games I find it hard to recommend them, especially Dear Esther and Shadow of the Colosuss, because with the popularity for fast pace action and gun fights, these games are sadly not for everyone. These games are more about the journey, emotion and the atmosphere. Which reminds me, I still have to play 'Journey'...must get on that soon.

An honourable mention goes towards 'Portals' end theme 'Still Alive'.

Good taste, my man, World of Goo does indeed have some amazing music in it.

As for myself, I'll say Age of Empires 1:
These two are the highlights for me, but frankly the entire soundtrack is fantastic.

Another game I'd like to bring forward is HoMM 4. The game might not have been the best in the series, but the music probably was:

Also, an honorable mention goes to Caesar 3:

Wow, really digging those HoMM themes. That's some really great stuff. Age of Empires tracks are good too.

Glad you like them, they are indeed amazing. Have some more, in case you didn't explore on your own:

Oh and while I'm at it, I want to bring up another favourite OST of mine, that of Halo 2:

I recommend to anyone who loves Japanese video game music to start listening to shmup OSTs as the genre is synonymous with great VGM just as much as JRPGs. The OSTs and arrange albums of CAVE Interactive Co are a good place to start and the works of Manabu Namiki and Ryu Umemoto (they also have work in other genres) Then branch out to Dreamcast shmups, MD / PCE and also PC Doujin shmups especially Touhou which has numerous arranges and remixes by fans and pros alike. (most new shmups come with an OST, many of th older seperate CDs have become well sought after and pricy collectors items)

Here's my OST playlist for those who want to have a look, there's alot of retro stuff on there too with the more modern shmup music at the end. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL999B49D1E6D96430&feature=plcp

The Wipeout Series has great music too, especially the earlier games which have covers of the biggest and most talented electronic musicians of that time

Off the top of my head The Binding of Isaac. That game has some of the best music I have heard in video games in quite some time.

Suikoden, hands down:

The entire soundtrack fits the mood of the game so well.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim, Halo 2, Halo 3 ODST, Halo 4 (surprised me how much I love it)
Mass Effect 1 and 2, Lost Odyssey, Bit of Ninja Gaiden (muramasa theme is ace)
Loads more but that's all that springs to mind.
I'm at work so should be working :)

Persona 4 OST is made of win and all the Final Fantasy and Zelda OST or OST remixes are usually pretty good... although nostalgia goggles and devoted fandom may be impairing my judgement

Persona 3, 4, PSP, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, SMT: Nocturne, and Blazblue all have great OST's. I've not played them but I've heard some good ones from Touhou.
